Preparation of Sodium Carbonate Extract

A small amount of the salt is mixed with twice the amount of sodium carbonate in a 100 mLbeaker, 20 mL of distilled
water is added and the solution is boiled for 10 minutes, cooled and then filtered. The filtrate is called sodium
carbonate extract.

SILVER NITRATE TEST:

To a few drops of the extract added No curdy white precipitate is Absence of Chloride

tube.

CALCIUM CHLORIDE TEST

No white ppt. is obtained. Absence of oxalate
To a few drops of extract with dil.
Acetic acid. Boil off CO2 and add
calcium chloride solution.

Identification of basic radicals

Preparation of original solution

The original solution is prepared by dissolving a gram of the salt in 10 to 15 mL of distilled water. If the
salt is insoluble in distilled water dissolve the salt in dil.HCl.The clear solution thus obtained is original
solution.

Identification of basic radicals(Group Separation)

Zero group:
presence of NH4+
To 1 mL of the original solution a Reddish brown precipitate is (zero group)
few drops of Nessler’s reagent and obtained.
excess of sodium hydroxide
solutions are added.

1.To a few drops of the original

solution, dil. HCl is added No white precipitate is obtained Absence of (group I) Pb2+

2.To a few drops of the original

solution and dil. HCl and then No black precipitate is obtained Absence of (groupII) Cu2+
passed H2 S gas

3. To a few drops of the original

solution, ammonium chloride and No white precipitate is obtained
ammonium hydroxide solution are absence of group III (Al3+)
added.

4. To a few drops of originalsolution

1 mL of ammoniumchloride and 2 No white precipitate is obtained absence of group IV (Zn2+)
mL of ammoniumhydroxide
solutions are added and then H2S gas
passed.

5. To a few drops of originalsolution

and 1 mL ammoniumchloride, 2 mL
of ammoniumhydroxide and 2 mL of No white precipitate is obtained absence of group V
saturatedammonium carbonate
solutionsare added.

6. To a few drops of
originalsolution 2 mL of
ammoniumchloride, 2 mL of No white precipitate is obtained
ammoniumhydroxide and 2 mL absence of group VI ( Mg2+)
of di-sodium hydrogen phosphate
solutions are added.

Confirmatory Test for basic radicals

Group zero(Ammonium NH4+):

1. Nessler’s reagent test: To a few Ammonium is confirmed.
drops of original solution, 1mL of Reddish brown precipitate is
Nessler’s reagent and Sodium obtained. 2K2[HgI4] + NH3 + 3NaOH
hydroxide solutions are added. NH2.HgO HgI +7NaI+2H2O

2. Sodium hydroxide test :

To a few drops of original Characteristic smell of ammonia and Ammonium is confirmed.
solution add sodium evolution of dense white fumes is
Hydroxide solution and warm. observed.

Result:

1. The given acid radical is Carbonate

2. The given basic radical is Ammonium

3. The given simple salt is Ammonium Carbonate
