1.3 MATERIALS PROPERTIES

1.3.1 STEEL

• Yield Strength fy = 355 MPa

• Modulus of Elasticity Es = 70,000 MPa
• Density γs = 27.0 kN/m3

1.3.2 CONCRETE

• Grade C50 SRC

• Compressive Strength Fcu = 50 MPa
• Density γc = 25.0 kN/m3

1.3.3 ANCHOR BOLT

• Grade 8.8
• Yield Strength fy = 640.0 MPa
• Tensile Strength fu = 800.0 MPa

2.0 CHAPTER II: DESIGN NOTES AND REFERENCES

2.1 DESIGN CONCEPT

• Structural analysis and design of the steel gate will be conducted using
Autodesk Robot Structural, where a 3d numerical model will be
provided to check the internal forces and moment.

• Manual calculations were also developed to obtain the applied loads

based on the information received from the clients and code
requirements.

2.2 DESIGN LOADINGS

2.2.1 SELFWEIGHT

The self-weight which is automatically calculated by the software will be

conducted according to its section properties and material density.

2.2.2 LIVE LOAD

According to AASHTO standards for highway signs and traffic signals the
Impact load for a 40 KMH speed road has been considered
conservatively 8.9KN to be applied at 1.0 m height of the structure.

Figure 2: Live Load

Sheet: 6 of 26
2.2.3 WIND LOAD

The Wind load has been Auto Generated using Autodesk Robot Software
Wind Speed considered = 38 m/s knowing that the structure is
symmetrical the wind applied on 3 directions as shown below

2.3 LOAD COMBINATIONS

The load combinations for both serviceability and ultimate limit state were
extracted from the code mentioned in clause 1.2.

3.0 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

This part of the report shows the verification conducted for the proposed
steel members related to the GATE. The verification will be conducted
considering the load calculated in the previous section.

3.1 DEFLECTIONS

The verification against deflection will be conducted according to SLS

combinations.

Figure 7: Steel GATE Maximum Deflection

Sheet: 9 of 26
Maximum Deflection, δ = 11 mm

Allowable Deflection, δall = L/150 = 11500/150

= 76.66 mm
Maximum Deflection, δ = 11 mm < Allowable Deflection, δall = 77.66 mm →
OK

3.2 MEMBER CAPACITY

The verification of the member strength will be conducted considering

the maximum internal forces and moment according to ULS
combinations.

Sheet: 10 of 26
Figure 8: Maximum Utilization Ratio

Sheet: 11 of 26
3.3 DESIGN OF ANCHORAGE

The design of anchorage will be conducted considering the maximum

support reaction according to ULS combinations.

Sheet: 12 of 26
Figure 9: Reaction Forces

Maximum Reaction Forces:

Fx (Shear) = 2.51 KN Mx (Moment) = 39.64 KN.m

Fy (Shear) = 18.41 KN My (Moment) = 4.6 KN.m
Fz (Tension) = 14.4 KN Mz (Moment) = 3.11 KN.m

The above reaction forces has been taken to design the baseplate using IdeaStatica Software.

3.4 DESIGN OF CONCRETE FOUNDATION

3.4.1 Overturning

The design of footing will be conducted considering the maximum

support reaction according to ULS combinations.
Note: Soil passive force ignored.

M(OT) = ∑ Moment around X-Direction = 40+40+40+40 = 160 KN.m

M(RT) = Foundation Weight (W) X L
Where L = 3/2 = 1.5 m
W = 2.5 m X 3 m X 1.4 m X 25 KN/m³ = 262.5 KN
M(RT) = 262.5 X 1.5 = 393.75 KN.m
Factor of Safety = 1.5
M(RT) ≥ 1.5 M(OT) = 393.75 ≥ 240, OK

Sheet: 24 of 26
3.4.2 Bearing Capacity and Soil Reaction

The loads applied on the footing are the resultant Moment around the
X- Direction (Mx) and the vertical Force (FZ)

Figure 10: Soil Reactions - K

The Bearing Capacity Assumed = 150 KN\m²
Soil Reaction K = 84.68 KN/m², OK

3.4.3 Reinforcement

Figure 11: Top Reinforcement

Sheet: 25 of 26
Figure 12: Bottom Reinforcement

Considering the size of footing and the moment results, the Area of Steel
required will be the minimum reinforcement.

Minimum Area of Steel for a Foundation According to BS 8110

The minimum area of steel reinforcement for a foundation is typically
governed by the requirements for temperature and shrinkage
reinforcement. The standard specifies a minimum reinforcement ratio of:
ρmin=0.13% of the gross cross-sectional area

Calculation:

For a foundation with:

Width (b) = 2500 mm
Effective depth (d) = 1330 mm

The minimum area of steel (As) every 1.0 meter can be calculated as:
As= ρ min x b × d
As= 0.0013×1000×1330=1729 mm²/m
So, the minimum area of steel required for the foundation is 1729
mm²/m.

As Provided = T25@200 = 5T25

= 1964 mm²/m, OK
As Provided = T20@150 = 6T20
= 1884 mm²/m, OK
