The 24-Hour Clock (aka Military Time)
24-hour Standard

In most Spanish-speaking countries (and, in fact, in

most countries other than the U.S.), time is usually
expressed on a 24-hour clock (what we in the United
States generally refer to as “military time”). The 24-
hour system is especially used in public announcements such as timetables, bus/train/plane
schedules, movie/television/radio listings, sporting events, and business hours of
operation. So it’s important to be able to understand and tell the time according to the 24-
hour system!

 In the 24 hour clock, there are no 'am' and 'pm' labels.

The hours start at zero and go through to 23.
 All 24 hour clock times should be written hh:mm
 With the 24-hour clock, the words “cuarto”, and “media” are not used, and the
number of minutes is expressed by a full number without the ‘y’ or ‘menos’.

ex: 2:15- Standard- Dos y cuarto, 24-hour 14:15 catorce quince

29
Converting from 24-hour times to standard 12-hour
times

If there is a time that reads 12:00 or greater for the hour, know that it will convert to a
PM-based time on the 12-hour clock. When the hour is greater than 12, subtract 12 from
the hours and that will get you the time in PM. Here's how you do it:

 13:00 - 12= 1:00 PM

 14:00 - 12= 2:00 PM
 15:00 - 12 = 3:00 PM
Any time that shows 00-12 as the hours is a regualr AM time.
Ex: 00:30 = 12:30 am 10:05= 10:05 AM 08:20= 8:20 AM

2) When will I need to read and understand the 24-hour clock?
