If you can count to 29 in Spanish, you can tell time. The basic way of telling time in Spanish is use to the singular form of ser ("to be"), which is es, for one o'clock and the plural form, son, for other times. Minutes can be stated simply by separating them from the hour using y, the word for "and." Es la una. It is 1:00. Es la una y dos. It is 1:02. Son las dos. It is 2:00. Son las tres. It is 3:00. Son las seis y cinco. It is 6:05. Son las siete y diez. It is 7:10. Son las once y diecinueve. It is 11:19. To indicate the half hour, use media. Use cuarto to indicate the quarter hours. It is customary to use menos to tell time during the second half of each hour, stating the number of minutes until the following hour. Es la una menos diez. It is 12:50. (It is ten until one.) Leaving "for" untranslated: When an activity is no longer occurring, the "for" in time expressions is frequently left untranslated, as it often can be in English: Estudi dos horas. Using 'Durante'

Preposition Usually Translated as 'During' or 'For'

As you might be able to guess, the Spanish preposition durante has roughly the same meaning as the English "during" and is thus used in indicating what happens in durations of time. However, it is not used in exactly the same way as its English equivalent, and it is often better translated by the preposition "for" rather than by "during." Durante is used most similarly to "during" when it takes a singular object: Durante febrero, las condiciones de sequa empeoraron. During February, drought conditions got worse. Idiom Uses Form of Verb 'Hacer'
The usual way of saying in Spanish that something happened some period of time ago is to use the verb hace (a form of hacer, "to make") followed by the period of time. The phrase using hace can come at the beginning of the sentence or following the verb. The main verb of the sentence is most commonly used in the preterite (simple present) tense, although other past tenses are possible. Here are some examples of this usage of hace: Hace cinco aos nuestra escuela fue acreditada. (Five years ago, our school was accredited.) Es algo que aprend hace poco tiempo. (It is something I learned a short time ago.) La historia de la ciudad comenz hace mucho tiempo. (The story of the city began a long time ago.) Hace tres aos estaba preparado para salir de casa. (Three years ago, I was prepared to leave home.) Hace muchos aos un hombre anciano me dijo una historia que su madre le haba dicho. Phrases Act Like Conjunctions, Tell When Events Occur
Spanish has numerous phrases in everyday use that are used in telling when events take place. The phrases that are the focus of this lesson can be thought of a type of subordinating conjunction, although they are made up of more than one word. Like other subordinating conjunctions, they connect two clauses. (A clause is kind of like a short sentence, with a subject and a verb, although in Spanish the subject doesn't not have to be explicitly stated.) An example should make this clear. A common phrase of this type is a la vez que, which typically is translated as "at the same time as." Here is how it might be used in a sentence: Usted puede descargar vdeos a la vez que los ve. (You can download videos at the same time that you see them.) In this sentence, the first clause (also known as the main clause) is "Usted puede descargar vdeos" and the second clause (the dependent clause) is "los ve," which has an implied subject of usted. The phrase a la vez que joins the two clauses into a single sentence. Following are some other common subordinating phrases of time. Note that in each of the sample sentences, a sentence structure of a main clause, followed by the subordinating phrase and then the dependent clause is used (but see the note below). a partir del momento en que (from the moment that) La revolucin cesa a partir del momento en que hay que sacrificarse por ella. Note: In most if not all the cases above, the clauses in the sentence can be reversed, although the conjunction still precedes the depending clause. In the instance of "a poco de que," for example, the sentence also could have been written this way: A poco de que se encendi la computadora, aparecieron las primeras imgenes. The examples above have all been written with the main clause first to help students more easily understand the concept.

Most of them can be located either before or after the verb they refer to.
