The title of the article is ‘Should video games be considered a sport?’ This article is
taken from Funtech. It tells us the reason why video games should be a sport. Based on the
article, the author partially agrees, which is that there are plenty of compelling arguments for
why it should be considered as a sport such as the physical demands of competitive gaming,
teamwork and communication and developing useful skills. But there’s also disadvantages of
video games such as it will negatively impact the children.
The physical demands of professional gaming are possibly the most compelling case
for why video games should be classed as a sport. We agree that esports appeal to the
competitive spirit. People assemble to watch athletes and players compete in displays of ability
and strategy. The fact that e-sport tournaments attract a large audience and have large prize
pools demonstrates the global popularity and competitiveness of video gaming. People
recognizing video games as a sport argue that the mental fortitude required to compete at the
highest level is akin to the psychological challenges faced by athletes. They must force
themselves to react rapidly to their opponents and devise tactics to win, because of these
various parts of the brain will be activated at the same time. Mastering a video game
necessitates consistent practice, attention, and the capacity to perform under pressure, all of
which are attributes shared by traditional sports. Furthermore, we believe that competitive
gaming necessitates highly sophisticated motor skills. Esports players, like traditional athletes,
must perfect their reflexes, hand-eye coordination, decision-making skills, and teamwork.
We agree that video games are good teaching tools for teamwork, especially when it
comes to younger players in offline multiplayer games like Splatoon, which provide a safe
setting without the need for internet discussion. Indeed, the cooperative gameplay found in
titles like Captain Toad, Snipperclippers, and Smash Bros. aids in the development of skills
and strategic thinking. But we think it's important to take things slowly when introducing voice
chat to older players in online games like Overwatch, Monster Hunter, and Fortnite. This is
because these games have extra components that need to be watched out for in order to
provide a fun and instructive experience.
The claim that video games help kids in many ways, especially with tenacity and
cognitive development, is one with which we somewhat agree. Research reveals that
individuals who play video games frequently have higher IQs, better spatial recognition,
multitasking ability, and greater problem-solving capabilities. Further supporting the favorable
effects seen in numerous studies is the idea that video games improve mental health,
socialization, and academic performance. The argument emphasizing the relevance of video
games in teaching persistence is convincing, since it illustrates how meeting and conquering
problems in games may translate into real-world problem-solving skills. Though we emphasize
the necessity for responsible gaming behaviors and parental supervision to minimize any
harmful effects, we acknowledge the concerns about age-appropriate content and potential
addiction.
However, video games also have a negative impact on children. For example, they will
neglect to do their school work, forget their responsibilities and so on. They are also likely to
see things that shouldn't be seen since they are still underage. Therefore, parents must be
worried about allowing their children to play video games. Parents can limit the time their
children can play video games by downloading an application in the console. For example, the
Nintendo Switch has a built-in function to help parents determine the time to play video games
and the time limit for playing video games. If the set time is exceeded, parents will receive a
notification and can remotely turn off video games
Personally, we believe video games should be considered as esports because they can
help our country gain international recognition. Designating a game as an esport can lead to
international recognition and inclusion in major esports tournaments. This exposure can
elevate the profile of the game and its competitive scene. In addition, esport can open job
opportunities for professional players. Acknowledging a game as an esport opens up
professional opportunities for players. They can pursue careers as professional gamers,
coaches, analysts, or content creators, contributing to the overall ecosystem.
In conclusion, the Funtech article discusses whether or not video games should be
classified as sports, offering a balanced opinion that takes into account both the benefits and
drawbacks of this designation. The essay emphasizes the mental toughness and physical
strain that come with competitive gaming, but it also emphasizes the benefits, such as how it
can promote strategic thinking, cooperation, and cognitive growth. It does not, however, avoid
discussing the possible detrimental effects on kids, such as responsibility, negligence and
exposure to offensive material. In order to balance maximizing the positive effects of video
games with reducing their hazards, especially for younger players, the conclusion highlights
the significance of responsible gaming behaviors and parental monitoring. In the end, the
essay argues in favor of a deliberate and methodical process for determining whether video
games qualify as sports, taking into account both their possible benefits and drawbacks.
