AIM: To Determine the Coefficient of Viscosity of
Liquid
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Ostwald’s Viscometer
2. Stop watch
3. Weighing machine
CHEMICAL REQUIRED:
1. Distilled water
2. Kerosene
THEORY:
To determine the viscosity of the given liquid using
distilled water as a reference, we can employ a
comparative method typically using a Ostwald’s
viscometer. One can relate the viscosity at different
states using the following form:
) x n1
P2xt 2
n2 =( P1xt 1
where,
n1= viscosity of distilled water
n2= viscosity of the given liquid
P1= density of distilled water
P2= density of given liquid
t1= mean time (distilled water)
t2= mean time (given liquid)

Fig. Ostwald’s viscometer
PROCEDURE:
1. First of all, viscometer was taken and rinsed with water. It was
then filled with distilled water from lower end of the tube but not
completely.
2. The distilled water was taken sucked up to upper bulb of the tube.
The level was kept stationary by holding with finger.
3. The time taken by distilled water to drop down from upper
marked level to lower marked level was observed.
4. The process was continued two or more times.
5. The same process was carried for given liquid and reading was
noted.
OBSERVATION:
SL. NO. SAMPLE TIME TAKEN MEAN
(SEC) TIME(SEC)
1. Distilled water 13.77
13.84 T1=13.69 sec
13.47
2. Kerosene 19.97
19.66 T2=19.86 sec
19.96
CALCULATION:
Weight of empty specific gravity bottle(w1) = 8.69 g
Weight of empty specific gravity bottle + distilled water (w2) = 22.78 g
4
Weight of specific gravity bottle + kerosene (w3) =19.83 g
=0.790 g/ml
Viscosity of distilled water (n1) = 0.997 cp (standard value)
P 2. t 1
Viscosity of kerosene (n2) = P 1. t 1 x n1
0.790 X 19. 86
= 0.997 X 1 3 , 69 x 0.997
15. 6894
= 1 3.64893 x 0.997
= 1.1495 x 0.997
= 1.1460 cp
=0.001146 Pa.S
