Firmware Upgrade
Requirement:

 PC with Parallel (configured to ECP Mode), USB or Ethernet Port

 IEEE1284 Centronics or USB Type “A to B” or Ethernet cable
 “File2PRN” Update Tool (or FCOPY.exe) & Firmware files.
 Print Driver installed and configured to the preferred “upgrade method” Port (eg USB).
Note: For AR-M351/451U only, the AR-NC7/8 must be “installed” to upgrade via
Ethernet and both devices (PC & Machine) must have Static IP addresses entered.

Caution:
When downloading firmware, ensure the correct firmware file is sent to the device.
ARM351/451N & ARM351/451U firmware is different – eg Do NOT upgrade a basic
ARM351U with ARM351N firmware.
ARM351/451U & ARM351/451N firmware is prefixed with either “n”, “u” accordingly.
Also, for ARM351/451U installed with ARNC7, “p” firmware should only be used.
Examples: ARM351N n1.15 (n firmware)
ARM351U u1.15 (u firmware)
ARM351U + ARNC7 p1.15 (p firmware)
ARM351U + ARNC8 n1.15 (n firmware)
Also, there are now 2 types of flashrom used on the ARM351/451 series. For machines
installed with “ELEM” type flashrom, download the firmware file with the “elm” filename
extension (eg P1.15_elm.sfu).

Procedure:
1. Power off the Machine & remove the MFP Control PWB.

2. Confirm the Flashrom type installed and refit the MFP Control PWB.
(ELEM Type will have LF stamped on the back of the Flashrom).

3. Remove the cover that exposes the MFP Dip Switch control and set both to “Write
Mode”.

connector.

5. Start Windows (Power on the PC).

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the folder that contains both the Firmware data
file and “Update tool”.

6. Power on the MFP device - The MX-M350/450 should automatically enter Diagnostic
mode (Version Check CONF****** should be displayed).

7. By using the Up (Document Filing), Down (Image Send) and the Menu (Job Status)
keys, enter the desired upgrade mode for updating the firmware (USB or Ethernet).

8. Press OK (Start key). The display should change to:-

Firm Update Waiting Data

9. Launch the Firmware Update Tool (File2PRN.exe).

10. Click Reference, browse to the required Firmware file and select the required Print
driver (Centronics, USB or Network) from the drop down menu.
Example shown: Updating AR-M451U (& AR-NC8) with n1h16_elm.sfu” firmware

GENERAL SPECIFICATION
Symptom Advice
Is it possible to Tandem Copy/Print an MX-M350/450 supports Tandem operation with
MX-M350/450 with ARM351/451? AR-M351/451 series
This behavior is machine specification, in order to count and
charge correctly. (ie. no free copies or prints). However,
when Vendor mode is ON, it is possible to improve
copy/print performance by changing the setting within Sim
26-03 from 2 to 4 (Vendor Ex & No Temporary Charge). If
Job Queuing and Document Filing are required, change the
Machine copies/prints at a slower
value to 5, 6 or 7 accordingly (refer to the Service Manual for
speed when using Vendor Mode
guidance).
Caution:
When VENDOR EX is enabled and credit expires before a
job is completed, the MFP will clear the remaining sheets of
paper within the paper path of the MFP device without
charging, as no credit remains.

FIRMWARE
There are now 2 types of flashrom that can be used on the
ARM351/451 machines.
For machines installed with “ELEM” type (recognized by LF
on the Flashrom), download the firmware with the “elm”
“Data Error” when trying to upgrade
filename extension (eg P1_15_elm.sfu).
the firmware
For machines with the original Flashrom installed, download
the firmware without the “elm” extension however, if the Boot
firmware is 1.5A or higher, you can also download the
“ELEM” firmware.
Check that the Boot & Main FlashROM‟s are installed in the
Dead Machine. correct sequence. Also, corrupt FlashROM‟s will cause the
same symptom –replace or re-flash.

ERROR CODE
L4-02 during warm up MC Unit arching – repair or replace
U2-02 / U1-01 Battery jumper (JP6) set to “Off” - change setting to “On”.
U2-11 may be experienced when multiple jobs are deleted
from the HDD at once and the HDD read access time
U2-11, especially when multiple increases.
Confidential jobs (PIN control) are sent Perform "Optimization of the Hard Disk" from within Key
to the device Operator menu (Device Control) and upgrade the MFP
firmware to the following version (or higher) for increased
HDD operation margin:- ARM351/451N = N1A15
Check that the upper cassette lift shaft within the ARD27/28
U6-01 Desk Unit has not twisted – replace if necessary

PAPER FEED & TRANSPORT
Check for burrs on the circumference of the opening for the
TPFD2ND2 paper jams from the desk transfer follower roller on the Desk Unit Left Door
unit (PGIDM1944FCZ1) which may catch the leading edge of
the paper, causing a TPFD2ND2 paper jam.
Check if the fusing follower rollers PG 8-32 (x 4) are not
POD1 jams deformed.
Replace with new type roller - PCLR-0460FCZ1
“Sluggish” timing of the paper entry actuator. Replace the
AIPND_S Jams actuator with modified type (dimension change)
MLEVP0807FCZ2

COPY QUALITY
This symptom may be experienced if the Fuser temperature
is too high (depends on the media being fed) or when the DV
Doctor blade gap is not set correctly, especially if the toner
content within the DV unit is high (over toning).
1. Check the DV Doctor Blade gap is set to 0.45mm (as
specified within the Service Manual).
2. Check that PCU Firmware version v02.10.00 is
installed (This will lower the fuser temperature to
Shadow / Background on copies 165C).
3. Ensure the Developer & Drum rotation counters are
reset/cleared, prior to executing Sim 25-02 (once)
after Developer replacement.
Procedure= Sim 24-05, 24-07, 24-11, then 25-02.
Note:
Normally, the DV level should set to approx 100 however, if
the DV level is much lower (eg. 80), enter Sim 80-02 and
increase the set value to approx. 100. Perform test printing
to remove any access toner.
This symptom may be experienced if the drum rotation time
is extremely high, and the copy throughput is low (eg. many
single copies/prints).
Background on copies or excessive Install PCU firmware v02.00.00 that reduces the toner
waste toner causing the drive gear(s) density and drum rotation time/waste toner content.
to break within the process unit. Also ensure both Drum & Developer rotation counters are
cleared after replacement (Sim 24-05, 24-7 & 24-11).
Note: May also cause the machine to remain in “Warm Up”
condition (continually cycles over)
Poor Image Quality when printing
In Sim 55-02, change soft switch 2, bit 1 from 0 to 1
stored/scanned files from the Hard
(Scanner exposure setting for copy mode)
Drive (darker than copy mode)
Density variation in the Feed Direction Check that the Drum Unit Flange LPLTF0108FCZZ has not
(Rear Frame only) worn (check for flakes of plastic in the rear pipe).
