MFC 200 – MULTI FUNCTIONCALIBRATOR

Introduction
MFC 200 is a multi-function calibration source with both AC as well as DC voltage and current sources,
milli-ampere and milli-volt sources, built-in standard resistance and frequency sources, making it ideal for
instrument calibration. It comes with 4.3" graphical color LCD and easy to user interface with continuous
digital pot and push button keys.

Theory of Operation
The MFC 200 is a programmable Single Phase AC/DC phantom power source controlled by a mixed signal
high speed processor, which provides low level signals. The AC Signals are digitally synthesized with the
Frequency, Amplitude and Phase as set by the user through the front panel keyboard or through the RS-232
port. The Accuracy and Stability of the set parameters are derived from the Internal Reference Voltage and
the Quartz Crystal Oscillator and Continuous closed loop control. The voltage and current signals are
sampled with high resolution ADC and the RMS values of signals and power factor are calculated and
controlled with DSP algorithms.

Apart from the variable AC frequency from 45 Hz to 65 Hz, the instrument offers low voltage (5V)
signals at selectable multiple frequencies, which are derived from the stable crystal controlled system clock.
The low voltage signals (0.1V – 10V and 1mA – 20mA) signals are separately derived using precision
DACs and controlled by CPU. The resistances are provided by high stability 0.1% resistors.

MFC 200 and Its User Interface

The Power On/Off switch and input fuse are situated near to the power inlet.

Interface Elements
_________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Color Graphic LCD 480x270

2. The LCD indicating the functionality of push button switches in current context.
3. The push button switches. The function of these switches varies depending on the use
context. The LCD bottom line indicates the current context.
4. Hi voltage/Current terminals
5. Low level signals
6. RS232 connector
7. Resistors
8. This is a continuously rotating knob. It is a rotary encoder used as a digital pot. It can be used
for browsing through menu items or setting parameters depending on the context. It has an
integrated push button switch which is referred as “Enter’ key in this document.

After power on the instrument enters in to the initialization procedure during which the LCD displays the
Logo. Upon completing the initialization, the menu options are displayed indicating the instrument is ready
to use. The options displayed are ‘AC Source’, ‘DC Source’ and ‘Low AC’, ‘Lo DC’ & frequency , 0-10V
and 0-20mA are available in Low Signals option. Either using the knob or be the UP/Downbuttons,
one can browse through the options and select the preferred one by pressing the Enter. Resistors are
available at the lower raw of terminals.

AC Source Mode

On selecting the AC Source option, the AC Source page will be displayed. The values of set parameters,
read parameters and calculated parameters are displayed on this page.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

By pressing the SetP button, one can enter the mode to update the set parameters. The cursor will be
displayed on one of the set parameters and using the knob, it can be browsed through all four settable
parameters. By pressing the ‘Enter’, the item to be modified can be selected and the parameter will be
displayed in red color indicating it is in update mode. The value can be incremented/decremented using the
knob and the resolution (step size) of this increment/decrement is shown above the 5th button. By pressing
this button, the resolution can be dynamically changed (like 0.1V, 1V or 10V). The UP/Down arrow mark
near PFset indicates lead/lag and while setting the PF value the cursor will come on this arrow prompting
to select lead or lag ( Down arrow for Lag and Up arrow for lead). By pressing the Startbutton generation
of voltage and current start and within few seconds will be stabilized to the set values. The Start will
become the Stop button to end generation.

The time and accumulated energy shown are for the generation session. A new start of generation will reset
and restart both time and energy registers. The EBgin and EEnd button can be used to stop the time and
energy accumulation and restart the same with in a session. This feature can be helpful while testing an
energy meter by synchronizing both the meter’s energy accumulation.

DC Source Mode

The DC Source mode is similar to AC mode. Since thre are only two parameters to be set, The SetV and
SetI buttons will directly takes to the update parameter mode.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Low Signal Mode

The Low signals include 0.1-10 V , 1-20 mA, and frequency outputs. Each of these parameters can be
changed by pressing the corresponding switch and using the knob and generation can be started or
stopped with the start/stop button. There are three pages ‘Source Lo_AC’, ‘Source Lo_DC’ and ‘Frequency’
which can be selected from main menu.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Resistance

The resistances are available on the lower part of the instrument. The resistance can be measured
across the blue terminals. For 1, 10 and 100 ohms, 4 wire measurement is possible and the Yellow
terminals provide the voltage sense for this purpose.

RS232 Interface

The instrument has an RS 232 interface by which a PC can be connected to configure and read the
measured values. This can be used to develop an automated test or calibration procedure especially
in production environment. The UART setting is fixed as 9600 baud, No parity, 8bit data, 1 stop
bit and no flow control.

The commands to P350 over RS232 are simple text (ASCII) string. All commands start with a ‘:’
and end with ‘Enter’ (carriage return or 0x0d in hex).

Commands for setting parameter

The string to be send is shown in blue color

1. Set Voltage

Format :SV1 nnn.nn CR , where nnn.nn the voltage value to set and CR
the enter key (carriage return).
Example :SV1 230,00 CR will set 230V

2. Set Current

Format :SI1 nnn.nn CR , where nnn.nn the current value to set and CR the
enter key (carriage return).
Example :SI2 1.00 CR will set 1 A

3. Set PF
The power factor is normally positive for lead and lag. Only for the RS232interface
the –ve sign is used to indicate lagging power factor and +ve sign for leading power
factor. This convention does not have any meaning outside this protocol. (Normally
a –ve phase angle of current with respect to voltage is considered leading angle).

Format :SP1 nnn.nn CR , where nnn.nn the PF value to set and CR the
enter key (carriage return).
Example :SP1 -0.8 CR will set 0.8 power factor lagging
:SP1 0.5 CR will set 0.5 power factor leading

4. Set Frequency
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Format :SF nn.nn CR , where nnn.nn the frequency value to set and CR
the enter key (carriage return).
Example :SF 55.50 CR will set frequency to 55.5 Hz

5. Set Mode

Format :SM1 CR to set AC mode

: SM2 CR to set DC mode
:SM3 CR to set LV mode
6. Set Low Voltage

Format :SLV nnnn CR nnnn is the voltage value to be set

Example :SLV 4.000 CR

7. Set Low Current

Format :SLI nnnn CR nnnn is the current value to be set

Example :SLI 10.000 CR

8. Get Parameter - Read a measured or calculated parameter

Format :GV1 CR , to read voltage

:GI1 CR , to read current
:GP1 CR , to read PF
:GW1 CR , to read Power
:GE1 CR , to read energy
