Preposition

The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary says that a preposition is “a word or group of words, such
as in, from, to, out of and on behalf of, used before a noun or pronoun to show place,
position, time or method.”

Types of prepositions
Based on the different uses and functions of prepositions, they can be divided into four main
types. They are as follows:

Prepositions of Time – used to show when something is happening.


Ex: The class starts at 9 AM.
She was born on January 1.
We will go on vacation in December.

Prepositions of Place – indicate the place or position of something.


Ex: The book is on the table.
The keys are under the bed.
The clock is above the door.

Prepositions of Direction – used to denote the direction in which something travels or moves.
Ex: She went to the market.
The dog jumped into the pool.
They walked towards the park.

Prepositions of Location – employed to denote the location of a particular object.


Ex: He is standing at the door.
We live in the city.
The chairs are in front of the house.

Prepositions of Spatial Relationship – used to denote an object’s movement away from the
source and towards a source.
Ex: The cat is between the two boxes.
The painting hangs beside the mirror.
There is a lamp next to the couch.

Prepositional Phrase – a combination of a preposition and a noun(the object it is affecting).


Ex: She found her wallet under the couch.
They are having lunch at the new restaurant.
The children played in the garden.
Commonly used prepositions:
On, At, In ,Over ,Around, Through, Opposite to, In front of, Behind, Beneath, Beside, Above,
Below, Under, Underneath, Down, Up, Out, With, Into, Onto, Across, After, Before, Near,
Among, Along, Between, Toward, Away, From, To, Next to, By, Until, About etc.
