FENDERING SYSTEM AND BERTHING

FORCES AT THE JETTY

E = Wd V2 Cm Ce Cs
•BERTHING ENERGY IS DEFINED AS – WHEN AN APPROACHING VESSEL
STRIKES THE BERTH, A HORIZONTAL FORCE ACTS ON THE BERTH.THE
MAGNITUDE OF THIS FORCE DEPENDS ON THE KINETIC ENERGY (KE)
THAT CAN BE ABSORBED BY THE FENDERING SYSTEM.THE KINETIC
ENERGY”E” IMPARTED TO A FENDERING SYSTEM BY A VESSEL MOVING
WITH A VELOCITY”V” m/s IS GIVEN BY THE FOLLOWING FORMULA
------
2g
•Where Wd –DISPLACEMENT OF TONNAGE (DT) OF VESSEL IN TONNES
•V– VELOCITY OF VESSEL IN m /sec NORMAL TO BERTH
•G– ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY IN m /sec2
•Cm – MASS COEFFICIENT
•Cs – SOFTNESS COEFFICIENT
•Ce – ECCENTRICITY COEFFICIENT
RATE OF APPROACH OR BERTHING
VELOCITY ‘V’.

• BERTHING CONDITIONS WILL DEPEND ON ALIGNMENT

OF THE BERTH RELATIVE TO CURRENTS / TIDAL AXIS ,
AVAILABILITY OF TUGS , PHYSICAL LAYOUT OF THE
HARBOR,WINDAND WAVES AT THE TIME OF
BERTHING.
• FOR DESIGN PURPOSES NORMALLY USED VALUES ARE-
ARE-
• V=0.1M/SEC FOR FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS.
• V=0.15 M/SEC FOR NORMAL CONDITONS.
• V=0.25M/SEC FOR UNFAVOURABLE CONDITIONS.
MASS COEFFICIENT (Cm)

• a) IT GIVES THE INCREASE OF THE MASS OF THE VESSEL DUE TO THE QUANTITY
OF WATER MOVING WITH THE VESSEL DURING BERTHING AND IS DEFINED AS
MASS COEFFICIENT AND IS DEPICTED BY Cm
• Cm = l + 2 D / B
• WHERE D = IS MEAN DRAUGHT OF VESSEL (m)
• B = BEAM OF VESSEL (m)
• b) ALTERNATIVE TO (a) IN CASE OF A VESSEL WHICH HAS A LENGTH MUCH
GREATER THAN ITS BEAM OR DRAUGHT GENERALLY FOR VESSELS WITH DWT
GREATER THAN 20,000
• Cm = l + II/4 D2 L w
------------
Wd
• D = DRAUGHT OF VESSEL IN METERS
• L = LENGTH OVERALL IN METERS
• W = DISPLACEMENT TONNAGE OF VESSEL IN TONNES
ECCENTRICITY COEFFICIENT (C e)

• THE POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN SHIP AND FENDER IS LOCATED AT

SOME DISTANCE FROM THE CENTER OF THE GRAVITY OF THE SHIP AND
BY THE ROTATION OF THE SHIP AROUND THE POINT OF CONTACT,SOME
ENERGY WILL BE DISSIPATED.
• COEFFICIENT C e IS INFLUENCED BY-
BY-
• ANGLE OF APPROACH OF VESSEL AT BERTHING
• ECCENTRICITY OF SHIP’S POINT OF IMPACT WITH RESPECT TO ITS
CENTER OF GRAVITY
• C e = l+ ( l / r)2 Sin2 O
-------------------
l+ (l / r )2
• l = DIST FROM Cg TO THE POINT OF CONTACT PROJECTED ALONG THE
WATER LINE OF THE BERTH IN METERS
• R = RADIUS OF GYRATION ON THE PLANE OF THE VESSEL FROM C g IN
METERS
THE APPROACH ANGLE

• UNLESS OTHERWISE KNOWN WITH ACCURACY IT

SHOULD BE TAKEN AS 10 DEGREES .
• ASSUMING A DISTANCE OF 15 MTS BETWEEN Cg OF
THE SHIP AND THE POINT OF IMPACT AND AN
APPROACH ANGLE OF 10 DEGREES THE FACTOR C e
WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 0.4
• IN TIDAL WATERS THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN
APPROACH ANGLE UNLIKE NON-
NON-TIDAL WATERS WHERE
VESSEL APPROACH IS PARALLEL TO THE BERTH
SOFTNESS COEFFICIENT C s

• IT INDICATES RELATION BETWWEN THE RIGIDITY OF

THE SHIP AND THAT OF THE FENDER.
• IT EXPRESSES THE PROPORTION OF BERTHING
ENERGY TO BE ABSORBED BY THE FENDER.
• FOR SOFT FENDER C s = 1.0
• FOR HARD FENDERS C s = 0.9 IS ASSUMED
BERTHING FORCES CALCULATIONS

• THEY ARE CALCULATED AS PER IS 4651 PART III –

1989
• AT DHAMRA JETTY , AT BULK TERMINAL BERTHING
AND MOORING FORCES HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR
1,80,000 DWT VESSELS .
• CONSULTANTS HAVE TAKEN BERTHING ENERGY FOR
RANGE OF VESSELS 10,000 DWT / 1,00,000 DWT /
1,50,000 DWT AND 1,80,000 DWT WITH A SAFETY
FACTOR OF 1.4 TIMES OF THE HIGHEST VALUE WHICH
IS 89.0 t-
t-m = 124.6 t-
t- m
MOORING FORCES CALCULATIONS

• AT DHAMRA JETTY THE VALUE IS 200 TONNES FOR

BOLLARD DESIGN WHICH WILL BE PROVIDED 30
METERS APART.
• BOLLARD LOADS ARE ASSUMED TO ACT IN ANY
DIRECTION WITH 180 DEGREES AROUND THE
BOLLARD AT THE SEA SIDE AND 60 DEGREES
HORIZONTALLY UPWARDS
ASSORTED FORCES AND THEIR LOADS

• CURRENT LOAD : AVALUE OF 2 METERS PER SECOND IS ASSUMED

FOR MOORING FACILITIES AND NAVIGATION
PURPOSES.HOWEVER,IT WILL BE PRIDENT TO CONFIRM THE
EXACT VALUE AT THE BERTH SITE .
• WAVE LOADS: THE DESIGN OPERATIONG WAVE HEIGHT IS 1
METER WITH TIME PERIOD OF 7 SECONDS .RANDOM EXTREME
WAVE HEIGHT IS 1.8 WITH TIME PERIOD OF 7 SECONDS.THIS
ALSO SHOULD BE TAKEN FOR OBSERVATIONS.
• WIND LOADS: FOR OPERATING CONDITIONS IS ASSUMED AT 20
METERS PER SECOND , NON - OPERATING 55
• SEISMIC LOAD: DHAMRA FALLS UNDER ZONE 3 AS SHOWN IN
IS CODE 1893 OF 2002
