1st. SYMBOL AND THEME
In a literary work, a symbol is a person, place, object, or idea that stands both for
itself and for something else, often an abstract idea.
For example, in literature, water is water, but it is often a symbol for rebirth as well.
Characters can also be symbols, representing larger ideas such as greed, kindness,
innocence, or evil.
In order to understand the deeper meaning of a symbol, look at the details used to
describe it. Consider how the characters react to it. Ask questions such as: Why is this
person, place, or object important? What do the characters think and say about it?
How do they interact with it? What does it look like?
DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions about The Doll’s House. Use textual
evidence from the story to support your responses.

The old oak tree had stood in the village square for over two centuries. Its massive branches
stretched out like welcoming arms, offering shade to weary travelers and a playground for
children. The villagers often gathered under it for celebrations, storytelling, and debates. But as
the town modernized, the tree became an inconvenience. A decision was made to cut it down to
make room for a new parking lot. When the chainsaws came, many villagers stood in silent
protest, refusing to let go of their cherished gathering spot. Despite their resistance, the tree was
reduced to a stump.
That evening, as the sun set, the villagers placed flowers around the stump, vowing to preserve
the memory of what had been.

In the attic of her grandmother’s house, Maria found an old clock covered in dust. The hands
were frozen at midnight, and its face was cracked. Her grandmother told her that the clock had
stopped on the night of her grandfather's passing many years ago. Since then, no one had tried to
fix it. To Maria, the clock seemed to hold the weight of unspoken grief. She decided to repair it.
After hours of work, the clock ticked to life again, its hands moving steadily forward. Her
grandmother smiled and whispered, "It’s time."
