Beach Scene

As the sun rises with a cool breeze, a gentle swish of golden

sand blows quickly through the air. In the distance, the puffy
clouds run happily enjoying the sunny morning air.

As they have fun, they form magnificent pictures! Proudly,

the lonely palm tree stands, hovering over the never-ending
blue. Its long leaves hanging dangerously, are ready to
fall...

One by one, the coconuts on the palm tree fall painfully with
a bash and elegantly the golden fairies fly up and land in
the mysterious never-ending water with a plop.

Underneath your relaxed feet, you feel the warmth of the

golden blanket in between your toes and the water
splashing in your face. You smell the salty water drifting all
around the place.

Fascinatingly, the silent sea is still and crystal clear.

Suddenly, a baby dolphin jumps up out of the sea and in a
flash, it disappears. Brightly, the beautiful beach glistens in
the blazing sunlight.

Often, the tide beckons the glorious water in. Tenderly, the
sun gives the world a fascinating glow. Enthusiastically, the
golden beach makes the world shine and a better place.

A new bedroom

Felix spent hours in his new bedroom. The walls were

a bright colour, which he loved. Air came through the
slightly open window. The sound of some music
came from the room next door. Sounds came from
the kitchen downstairs, too, and a smell filled the
room. Some stuff was piled on the dresser, and
more stuff was piled on the bed, shelves on the wall
held Felix's prized collection. Felix moved the stuff
from the bed and sat down. He wrapped himself in
his favourite blanket and called out to his brother in
the next room, "Hey, Pete, turn that music down!"

Charlie Bucket

Have you ever heard of Charlie Bucket? He is the little boy

who won the last golden ticket to visit Willy Wanka’s
chocolate factory.

Charlie lives in an old, battered cottage near the chocolate

factory with his mum, dad and grandparents. He is very
poor but he never complains. For tea every night, Charlie
has to eat boiled cabbage soup which smells disgusting.

His hair is sandy coloured and sticks out like a bird’s nest!
He wears scruffy clothes with holes in as he is poor and
can’t afford new clothes. He is so poor that he can’t afford
a coat in the winter but he never moans.

Charlie is a kind hearted boy who is always happy and has

a big smile on face.
Charlie is a thoughtful, loving boy who always thinks of
others. When he got given a chocolate bar for his birthday,
he wanted to share it with his family. He is caring because
he spends a lot of time with his grandparents.
What a nice boy he is!

My Aunt Nora

Last week, Aunt Nora arrived at our house for a family

dinner. She was wearing a bright jacket and skirt.
Everyone who meets Aunt Nora notices her clothes and
her jewelry, for example she always wears necklaces
and stuff. She also wears crazy shoes, and her pretty
hair is usually hidden under a hat decorated with
different things. My mom says that Aunt-Nora likes to
make a "fashion statement" wherever she goes.
At the dinner table Aunt Nora passed around one of her
famous casseroles. It smelled good, but I couldn't tell
exactly what was in it. I was afraid it might be something
gross!
Unfortunately, Aunt Nora always brings a "casserole
surprise" to family dinners.
Aunt Nora chatted all through dinner, just like she does
at every meal. She talked about things in her unusual
voice and waved her hands to show off her colored
fingernails. One thing is for sure Aunt Nora is never
boring. In fact, she is my favourite aunt!

From The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark

Twain (Hayes Barton Press, 2005, originally published
1885)

He was almost fifty and he looked it. His hair was long,
tangled, greasy and hung down, and you could see his
eyes shining through like he was behind vines. It was all
black, no gray; so were his long, mixed - up whiskers.
There wasn't any color in his face, where his face
showed; it was white; not like another man's white, but a
white to make a body sick, a white to make a body's
flesh crawl - a free - toad white, a fish - belly white. As
for his clothes - just rags, that was all. His hat was
laying on the floor - an old black slouch with the top
caved in, like a lid.

Trapped 1
Melinda knew she had to stay calm. She knew that would give her the best chance of
reaching home before nightfall. Her pack dug uncomfortably into her back. The tall trees
that had seemed so benign that morning, when she set out on this hike up Canyon Pass,
now looked a little menacing in the late afternoon light. Her mum and dad had insisted
she take her older brother, Aaron, with her that morning. He didn’t seem too keen on the
idea, and besides, he normally moaned when she took him hiking. Regretfully now, she
had left him behind. Now, he would be home and they would all be worried. 2

Melinda took a deep breath and surveyed her surroundings. Smooth, dirt walls stretched
impossibly up to the hole at the top. She was nowhere near tall enough to reach and there
was nothing to grab hold of to help her lever her body over the edge anyway. No. She
would have to come up with another solution. 3

That was when she saw it. A door. It was camouflaged against the wall. Hard to see
unless you looked really closely. Melinda stood, brushed the spidery tree roots away from
the knob and creaked it open slowly. 3

It was a passage. Dark and damp-smelling with tree roots dangling from the roof in
places. The last of the afternoon sun threw a little light into the entrance way but that
soon faded into darkness. Melinda fumbled in her pack for her torch, switched it on and
entered the passage. 3

For a while, there was nothing. Just the same dirt floor and dirt walls as Melinda twisted
and turned through the tunnel, ducking the tree roots and trying not to fall over.

“This tunnel goes forever,” Melinda muttered to herself, walking faster, eager to see
where the tunnel led.

“Sorry? What did you say?” Melinda

82
Year 5

stopped dead in her tracks as she heard the wizened little voice behind her. She thought
she was alone in this tunnel, apparently not. Melinda turned slowly, swept her torch beam
up and down until she spotted a small, wrinkled man.

He looked ancient with his wispy white hair and horn-rimmed glasses perched on the tip
of his nose.

“Uh,” Melinda stumbled, “I said, this tunnel goes forever.” The little old man smiled
coldly.
“Well of course it does unless you know where to go. Come on.” With that, the little old
man touched the wall lightly with his hand, shoved a big, copper key into the keyhole that
appeared, and led Melinda through the hidden door. 3

Melinda was surrounded. She sensed it before she saw it. Once her eyes adjusted to the
room’s bright light, she was faced with a dozen guards all around her. 4

“Ahhh good, you found her,” one of the taller guards said, smiling at the little old man,
who was now resting on a footstool, before turning his harsh eyes back on Melinda. “I
see you fell in our hole, unfortunate for you, but fortunate for us!” As the guard shouted
the final word, they started to run towards her, raising their spears. Melinda had to think
quickly. 4

Turning to the little old man, she grabbed the copper key from his grip and threw it as
hard as she could towards the opposite wall. She heard it hit the stone wall and fall to the
floor with a clang. Then she shoved the little old man off his footstool, grabbed it and
bolted through the tunnel door, slamming it behind her. 5

The sound of a dozen armed guards running into the locked tunnel door made Melinda
smile but she had no time to lose. Adjusting her backpack and holding the footstool in
both hands she ran, full speed, back through the tunnel and the door, pushing it shut
behind her. Strangely, as soon as the door clicked shut, it disappeared completely, fading
into the damp, crumbly wall of the hole. 5

The sun was just setting behind the horizon as she re-entered the hole. This time, though,
she had a plan. She placed the footstool against the wall and her pack on top. Then,
clambering on top of both, she was able to reach the edge and throw herself over, landing
flat on her back on the grass. 5

Melinda didn’t stop running until she saw the glow of her porch light. Safe. At last. She
vowed that she would never go hiking alone again. 6
