b) i. U.S. Steel Tower built of wrought steel approximately 26600 cm tall. If the
estimation of height changes between February (average temperature of 7 ºC)
and August (average temperature of 28 ºC) is 7 cm, calculate the value of the
coefficient of linear expansion of steel, α of this tower. Ignore the angles of the
iron beams and treat the tower as a vertical beam.

ii. If the atmospheric pressure of the manometer is 35.2 m, calculate the depth of
the pool, h, if the volume of an air bubble at the bottom of the pool of the depth,
h is 3/7 of its volume at the surface.

c) A 50 liter gas container is filled with 650 g of helium at 29 ºC. The molar mass of
helium is 32 gmol-1. Given R = 8.314 Jmol-1K-1. Calculate:
i. The pressure of the helium gas.
ii. The amount of remaining gas in the container in units of g, if the pressure of gas
drops to 1800 kPa.

d) The temperature of gas at point A is 45 ºC. If the root mean square (rms) speed of the
gas molecules is reduced by 10%. Calculate the temperature of gas in Celsius (ºC) at
point B after 5 minutes.
