One of the most revolutio1°y social reformns of the JaobiM regme
wAs the abolition of slavety in the French colonies. Th colonies in
the Caribbean Martinique Guadeloupe and San Domingo -were
important suppliers of commodities such as tobacco, indigo, sugar
a1d coffee. But the reluctance of Europeansto go and work in distant
and nfan liar lands meant a shortage of labour on the plantations.
So this was met by a triangular slave trade between Europe, Afica
and the Americas. The slave trade began in the seventeenth centug
French merchants saled trom the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes to
the African oast, where they bought slaves from lo cal dhieftains.
Branded and shackled, the slaves were packed tiehtly into ships for
the three-month long voyage aross the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
There tlhey were sold to plantation owiners. The exploit ation of slave
lalbour m ade it possible to meet the growing dem and in European
markets for sugar, coffee, and indigo. Port cities ike Bordeaux and
Nantes owed th eir economicprospenty to the flourishing slave trade.
