Introduction to
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 The Andaman and Nicobar
Islands is a union territory
of India consisting of 572
islands, of which 37 are
inhabited, at the junction
of the Bay of Bengal and
the Andaman Sea. The
territory is about 150 km
(93 mi) north of Aceh in
Indonesia and separated
from Thailand and
Myanmar by the Andaman
Sea. Total area of The
Andaman and Nicobar
Islands Is Approximately
8249 Km²
Geography of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 Both the Andaman and
Nicobar groups are formed by
the above-sea extensions of
submarine ridges of
mountains and are a part of a
great island arc. The highest
peak is 2,418 feet at Saddle
Peak on North Andaman,
followed by Mount Thullier at
2,106 feet on Great Nicobar
and Mount Harriet at 1,197
feet on South Andaman.

 The Ten Degree Channel is a
channel that separates the
Andaman Islands and Nicobar
Islands from each other in the
Bay of Bengal. The two sets
of islands together form the
Indian Union Territory (UT) of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
History of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 The history of the Andaman and Nicobar Starts from the Ramayana
period. In the Ramayana period it was called as Handuman, As time
passes away this place was renamed. In the 1st Century this place was
called as Agadaemon Angademan according to Ptolemy. Travellers
from different parts of the world visited this place.
 The first colony was set up in chatham island with 12 acres of land.
In 1857 “The Andaman Committee” under Dr. Frederic John Mouat
was set up to examine best site for penal settlement. Captain H Man
raised Union Jack at Port Blair on 22 January 1858 (2nd time) to
establish and manage Penal System.
 First battle For freedom in Andaman islands :- The Britishers forced
the prisoners to clear the jungle, which disturbed the natives, The
natives began to hit back. This brings up the spark among the
natives to fight against the Britishers for their freedom, which led
the first war called “The Battle of Aberdeen” in 17th May 1859).
History of
Andaman and Nicobar islands
 The first empire to list the islands Under it’s
territory was the Maratha Empire. Rajendra Chola
one of the Chola dynasty kings, Conquered the
islands to use it as it’s strategical Navy Base
against the sriwijaya empire (Located in Indonesia)
Languages of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 Most speak Hindi or Bengali,
but Tamil, Telugu, and
Malayalam also are common.
The indigenous inhabitants of
the Andaman Islands, the
Andamanese, historically
comprised small isolated
groups—all speaking dialects
of the Andamanese language.
Climates of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 Andaman has a moderate
temperature all through the
year within the range of 23°C
to 31°C. It has a tropical
climate. There are no severe
climate conditions except for
tropical storms and rains in
late summers and monsoons.
Summers (March to May) are
warm but pleasant with sea
breeze and have humidity
level about 80%.
Best Time to visit
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 The best time to visit
Andaman & Nicobar Islands is
considered between October
and May as the weather is
pleasant, just perfect for
sightseeing, water sports,
and beach excursion.
Monsoons (July to September)
are not always recommended
because of the high tidal
waves, incessant rains and
strong winds.
Traditional dress of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 Men wear loincloths or
shorts, and some decorate
their bodies with intricate
tattoos. The traditional
attire of the islands is
brightly colored and
reflects the rich flora and
fauna of the island. The
attire also includes
embellishments such as
beads and feathers, which
add a distinctive touch to
the traditional attire.
Religions of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
 More than two-thirds of the
people of the Andaman Islands
are Hindu; Christians make up
about one-fifth of the population
and Muslims less than one-tenth.
Many Nicobarese are Christian,
although some communities
practice local religions or have
adopted Hinduism, which is
prevalent throughout the region
