Winding Arrangement:
There are 24 slots in the stator. Since the machine is designed to be a 4
pole machine, there should be 4 coils for each winding(main and
auxiliary winding). Each of these coils spans 6 slots in total. A tabular
description of the winding arrangement is given below:

Test observations and calculation:

This is the equivalent circuit of the motor.

1) DC Test of Stator main winding:
V 40V
I 1A

From this test we can calculate the stator resistance.

V
Stator resistance, R1= I =40 Ω

2) No Load Test:
V 220V
I 1.3A
P 90W
n 1485 rpm
f 50Hz
In case of no load test, the slip of the machine is nearly 0. In our
n sync −n 1500−1485 1200∗f
case s= n sync
=
1500
=0.01 ≈ 0[∵ n sync=
P
=1500 rpm]

R2 R2 R R jX2
Since s → 0 , s
→∞ and ≈ 2 . Again j X M ≫ 2 +
2(2−s) 4 4 2
Hence the
equivalent circuit reduces to

(
∴ Z = R 1+
R2
4 )
+ j( X 1+
XM X2
2
+ )
2

From the measured data we get,

P
cos (θ )= =0.314
V∗I

∴ θ=71.7 °

V
Z= ∠ θ=169.231 ∠ 71.7 ° Ω
I

∴ Z =53.137+ j 160.67 Ω

So, from these calculated data we get,

R2 X M X2
R1 + =53.137 Ωand X 1 + + =160.67 Ω
4 2 2
Now we have already obtained the value of stator resistance which
is R1=40 Ω, so R2=4∗( 53.137−R1 )=52.548 Ω

3) Blocked Rotor Test:

V 130V
I 2A
P 160W
n 0 rpm
f 50Hz

In case of blocked rotor test, the slip of the machine is 1.

R R R2 R2 R jX2
Since s=1, 2 s2 = 22 and = . Again j X M ≫ 2 +
2(2−s) 2 2 2
Hence the
equivalent circuit reduces to

∴ Z =( R 1+ R 2 ) + j( X 1+ X 2)

From the measured data we get,

P
cos (θ )= =0.615
V∗I

∴ θ=52 °

V
Z= ∠ θ=65 ∠ 52 ° Ω
I

∴ Z =40.018+ j51.22 Ω

So, from these calculated data we get,

R1 + R2=40.018 Ωand X 1 + X 2=51.22 Ω.

Now assuming X 1 =X 2, we get X 1 =X 2=25.61 Ω .From the calculated

values of no load test we get,

∴ X M =244.51 Ω

Finally the equivalent circuit of the motor at steady condition is,

4) Starting torque angle(Blocked Rotor condition without

capacitor):
Winding Current
Main, I M 3.5A
Auxiliary, I A 2.6A
Combined(Main and Auxiliary 6A
in parallel), I C

IA

IM

We know from phasor,

I C =I A + I M
So,
2 2 2
I C −I A −I M
cos (θ )= =0.9335
2∗I A∗I M

∴ θ=21 °
Hence the angle created between the currents through main and
auxiliary winding is 21 °. Again we know that
τ =K I M I A sinθ

Since the angle is non-zero so there is a starting torque which

should be able to rotate the motor at starting condition.
5) Starting torque angle(Blocked Rotor condition with
capacitor):
Winding Current
Main, I M 3.5A
Auxiliary, I A 6.4A
Combined(Main and Auxiliary 6.5A
in parallel), I C

IA

θ

IM

We know from phasor,

I C =I A + I M
So,
2 2 2
I C −I A−I M
C os ( θ )= =−0.2446
2∗I A∗I M

∴ θ=104.16 °
Hence the angle created between the currents through main and
auxiliary winding is 104.16 °. Again we know that
τ =K I M I A sinθ

Since the angle is non-zero and significantly high so there is a

quite starting torque which should be able to rotate the motor at
starting condition smoothly.
