This manual provides together with the R40 AIS Base Station User
Manual [Ref. 1], all information you need to install and configure
your R40-Base Station. In addition to step-by-step procedures, you
will find valuable information on how to avoid problems and best
ensure trouble-free operation. The instructions in this manual
follow the order in which you are likely to use them. It is
recommended that you read this manual through before proceeding
with the installation. This will help you to understand the
installation requirements and avoid potential problems.
2 SYSTEM OVERVIEW
2.1 General
The R40 consists of the following main sub systems: Power supply,
12 channel Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS)
receiver (optional), VHF transceiver and BSC (Base Station
Controller).
The Base Station can be connected to a network (LAN/WAN) or
work as a stand-alone unit to provide different services such as:
VTS services
Repeater/Echo of other targets (radar targets)
Receiving position/nav. reports from vessels
Binary messages (safety related messages)
Operational control of mobile transponders
3 INSTALLATION PREPARATION
When installing the Base Station there are some details to think
about. If you plan the installation carefully, you will save time,
effort and materials. More important, you will prepare for a
trouble-free operation.
Here are the most important items to consider before and during
installation. These are described in more detail further on in this
manual.
VHF/GPS antennas
Proper length and routing of cables.
Safe distance to high–power transmitters and antennas.
Appropriate height and mounting surface, providing a 360-
degree view of horizon.
Correctly tuned antenna (VSWR)
External equipment
Cable length
Do you need special cables?

4 INSTALLATION
4.5 Power-up
When the installation is finalized it is time to power-up.
If AC-power is used the main switch on the rear panel of the Base
Station must be turned on.
Press the ON/OFF button on the front and hold it down until the
power LED lights up.
When the Base Station has finished booting, the B.I.T indicator
should be flashing green.
If both AC and 24 volts DC are connected to the Base Station a
quick test can be performed by switching the AC mains on and off.
The AC LED should indicate that no AC is present, but otherwise
the Base Station should continue operating.
5 FRONT PANEL
The information provided by the front panel is briefly described in this section. More
detailed information can be found in the User’s Manual [Ref. 1].
6 REAR PANEL
The rear panel accommodates all ports except for the Config1 port located on the front
panel. The ports and their usage are briefly described in this section. For more detailed
information refer to the following sections of this manual.

Product label This label provides unit-specific information such as product, part and
serial number.
Cooling fan The cooling fan is temperature controlled. It will only run if the internal
temperature exceeds a certain level.
DC inlet +24V DC power supply. Use a DC cable of at least 2x0.75 mm2.
Note: The Base Station is designed to be used with
negative grounded power supplies.
Connecting the unit to -24V will short-circuit
the DC supply of the installation.
DC fuse Replaceable fuse for the DC supply. Use: T5A 250V, 5x20 mm
AC inlet Mains supply standard (IEC 320) inlet. 100-240V, 50/60 Hz. Use the
supplied AC cable or an IEC 320 compatible cable of at least 3x0.75
mm2.
AC fuse Replaceable fuses for AC mains supply. Use a pair of T2A 250V, 5x20
mm fuses.
Mains switch Primary mains supply switch. Use this in order to fully turn off the Base
Station. Remember to also remove the DC power cable.
Earthing screw Connect the earthing screw to the site ground to fully utilize the lightning
protection of the Base Station. The earthing screw is internally connected
to the AC supply protective ground pin.
Display port RS-232 presentation system interface. Default rate 38400 baud.
Aux 1 port RS-232 RTCM port for connection to external equipment to enhance Base
Station functionality. Default rate 4800 baud.
Aux 2 port RS-232 NMEA Input reserved for future use.
BSC 2 port Used for connecting to the internal BSC. The electrical interface is RS-
232. Default rate is 38400 baud.
Digital IO port The input is reserved for future use.
The output goes active when an alarm is present.
1PPS input Enables the Base Station to use an external AIS frame synchronization
port source (option).
Aux 3 port RS-232 presentation system interface. Default rate 38400 baud. The
electrical interface is RS-422 to support long serial cabling.
BSC 1 port Used to connect to another R40 when in a hot standby configuration. The
electrical interface is RS-422.
Ethernet port The Ethernet port is to connect to external equipment such as PC’s or IP
network.
7.10 DC inlet
The Base Station can be operated on +24V DC supply alone or
together with mains supply. If mains supply is available the R40
will not consume any DC power, but use the DC source as back-up
power only. Thus, the Base Station will continue operating without
disruption if the mains supply should fail.
In order to avoid external battery damage, the Base Station will
turn itself off if the DC supply voltage should drop significantly
below 21.6V.
The DC Connector (Figure 6-1: R40 AIS rear panel) is an AMP
CPC 4-pin connector (AMP product no: 182917-1) with pin
assignment described by the following figure and table.
