4 INSTALLATION

4.1 Installing the GPS-antenna

Antenna location
Installing the antenna is a crucial part of the system installation.
How and where you install your antenna, with its cabling and
integral preamplifier can greatly affect its sensing efficiency.
Note: When using the DGPS data broadcast option provided
in R40-D, the position of the GPS antenna must be
surveyed using appropriate surveying methods or
equipment. The position shall then be programmed into
the Base Station. Any error in the GPS antenna position
will be reflected in the roving mobiles computed
position.
Interference
Stay safely away from interfering high-power RF energy sources
like radar and other transmitting radio antennas. Locate the antenna
away (> 3m, if possible) from and out of the radiation beam of
high-power transmitting antennas.
Avoid Vertical Obstructions
The GPS receiver uses satellites that can be just above the horizon,
so nothing should block the sky. Ensure that the bottom of the
antenna is at least 5 inches above the surface it’s mounted on.
Note: Small diameter obstructions, such as masts and booms
do not seriously degrade signal reception, but such
objects must not eclipse more than a few degrees of any
given bearing.
Reflecting elements
To minimize the risk for multipath interference the antenna should
be located as far away as possible from reflecting elements.
Cable Lengths
The coaxial cable between the GPS antenna and the Base Station is
of prime importance for proper performance of the system.
The attenuation (length) of the cable shall match the antenna gain
to achieve best performance of the GPS installation.
Recommendations of cable types and lengths can be found in
Appendix A.3 - GPS-Cable Selection Guide
Avoiding EMI Effects
Try to route the coaxial cable to the antenna as direct as possible,
direct paths reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects.
Avoid running the cable close to high-power cables, such as radar
or radio-transmitter cables. Use preferable double-shielded cable.

INSTALLATION Page 7

4.2 Installing the VHF antenna

How and where you install your antenna, with its cabling, greatly
affect its efficiency. The communication range will depend on the
following parameters:
Height
Terrain/obstructions
Cable attenuation
Antenna Gain
Antenna location
Find a location for the antenna, which is free from obstructing
objects. Stay safely away from interfering high-power transmitting
antennas. (Preferably locate the antenna at least 3 meters away
from and out of the transmitting beam of high-power transmitters.)
Avoid Vertical Obstructions
You should not install the antenna close to any large vertical
obstruction. The objective is for the VHF antenna to see the
horizon freely through 360 degrees. The larger distance to such
objects the less potential risk for interference.
Cable Lengths
Try to keep the cable as short as possible to minimize attenuation
of the signal (Tx and Rx). Cables equal or better than RG214 are
recommended; refer to Appendix A.4 - VHF-cable selection table.
Avoiding EMI Effects
Preferably, use double shielded coaxial cable to minimize radiation
of EMI.

Warning: The safety distance to the

equipment antenna is 1 m while transmitting
Do not work in close vicinity of the antenna
while the equipment is operating!

INSTALLATION Page 8

4.3 Installing the Base Station

The Base Station should preferably be installed in a 19-inch
equipment rack. The height of the unit is 3 U (133 mm).
Installation environment
The Base Station (IEC 529: IP20) should be installed indoors in a
temperature-controlled area.
Ensure there is enough airflow to avoid high ambient temperatures.
Operating temperature
The Base Station is designed to operate in a –15º to +55ºC ambient
temperature environment.

4.4 VHF antenna installation

When installing the VHF antenna, use an adapter cable (10 cm of
RG223) if the thickness or bending radius of the antenna cable
makes it difficult to attach the cable.
GPS antenna installation
The Base Station is equipped with a TNC GPS connector. Mind the
+5V DC output to supply the GPS antenna amplifier if the GPS
antenna is shared with other equipment.
Presentation system (VTS, etc.)
The presentation system shall be connected to the DISPLAY RS-
232, the RS-422 port or to the Ethernet port.

4.5 Power-up
When the installation is finalized it is time to power-up.
If AC-power is used the main switch on the rear panel of the Base
Station must be turned on.
Press the ON/OFF button on the front and hold it down until the
power LED lights up.
When the Base Station has finished booting, the B.I.T indicator
should be flashing green.
If both AC and 24 volts DC are connected to the Base Station a
quick test can be performed by switching the AC mains on and off.
The AC LED should indicate that no AC is present, but otherwise
the Base Station should continue operating.

4.6 Configuring the Base Station

Once powered-up the Base Station uses default parameters. If the
Base Station is a part of a network or is located near other Base
Station stations it needs to be configured. Refer to the User Manual
[Ref. 1].
In case the R40 should connect via Ethernet, the IP parameters may
need to be changed. This is done as described in section 9.

of the Base Station. Use the front Config1 port for temporary
maintenance operations only.

7.1 Serial ports electrical interface

Two types of electrical interfaces are used for serial communication:
RS-232: For communication over short distances between equipment on the
same site that uses the same power system. The serial communication cable
can be as long as 15 m (50 ft), but short cables within the same cabinet is
preferred to avoid malfunction.
RS-422, V11: Enables serial communication over longer distances. The ports
are isolated to 1 kV, so that equipment with different power systems can be
connected to the Base Station. Cabling can be as long as 800 m (0.5 miles), but
the performance is dependent on the cable type and its routing.
The R40 9-pin DSUB pinouts are as follows:

communication systems (i.e. VTS), and is configurable to 4800,
9600, 19200 or 38400 baud serial communication (38400 baud
default) Input/Output .
The presentation port can be configured by a proprietary Saab
TransponderTech NMEA command for operation as a
configuration port. This is to facilitate remote configuration using a
single communication line connected to the presentation port
(suitable for network applications).

7.3 Auxiliary Serial Ports (AUX 1, 2*)

These ports are used to interface external equipment using NMEA
0183 or RTCM 104 format (ex. Differential corrections) These
ports are configurable for 4800 to 57600 baud serial
communication (4 800 baud default) Input/Output .
(*) Not used in R40 standard version

7.4 Configuration Serial Port (CONFIG 1.)

The configuration port on the front of the Base Station is used
together with the Saab TransponderTech AB Configuration
program to set-up and when needed reconfigure the transponder for
correct operation. The port is also used for downloading new
software releases. It is also possible to monitor the transponder
through this port. The port is configured for 38 400-baud serial
communication Input/Output .

7.5 AUX 3 port

This port has the same function as the presentation system
(DISPLAY) port, but has the RS422 electrical interface. It enables
longer wiring of the serial cables and the use of multi port serial
networks. The default bit-rate is 38400 baud.

7.6 BSC 1 Serial port

7.9 Ethernet port

The Ethernet port enables control, monitoring and AIS services just
like any other port, and support the same configuration tools. The
electrical interface conforms to the Ethernet standard.

7.10 DC inlet
The Base Station can be operated on +24V DC supply alone or
together with mains supply. If mains supply is available the R40
will not consume any DC power, but use the DC source as back-up
power only. Thus, the Base Station will continue operating without
disruption if the mains supply should fail.
In order to avoid external battery damage, the Base Station will
turn itself off if the DC supply voltage should drop significantly
below 21.6V.
The DC Connector (Figure 6-1: R40 AIS rear panel) is an AMP
CPC 4-pin connector (AMP product no: 182917-1) with pin
