Chapter 1

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The problem and its setting

This research focuses on the complex relationship between study-life balance and

academic performance, examining the impact of factors like academic workload, time

management, and extracurricular activities on students. It also aims to answer questions

about how students manage their time and perceive the importance of time management

in their studies. The study will be conducted with Grade 12 Senior High School students

at Northern Zambales College, Inc., during the 2023-2024 academic year using a

descriptive research design. It seeks to inform strategies to enhance students' well-being

and academic success. The research will provide valuable insights for students, teachers,

parents, school administration, and future researchers interested in this topic. Privacy

and data security of participants will be ensured in accordance with the Data Privacy

Act of 2012.

Background of the study

Academic workload, employment, extracurricular activities, family

responsibilities, and individual time management skills are all contributors of several

factors that can influence students' ability to strike a balance between their studies and

personal life. These factors warrant further examination to ascertain how they

collectively impact a student's ability to balance their commitments and subsequently

influence their academic performance.

2

Achieving a successful academic performance is a goal that many students aspire to

attain. In the pursuit of academic excellence, students often find themselves grappling

with the challenge of balancing their study commitments with other aspects of their

lives. Smith and Brown (2016) conducted a comprehensive study revealing that students

who effectively manage their time and incorporate leisure activities into their routines

tend to perform better in their courses. Striking a balance between academic

responsibilities and personal life has a profound effect on students' overall well-being,

mental health, and educational outcomes.

The adverse effects of an imbalance, noting that students facing excessive stress

and burnout from academics experienced diminished academic performance (Johnson et

al., 2018). Research by Kaur and Sharma (2018) found a strong correlation between

excessive study pressures and decreased academic achievements, suggesting that

students who allocate time for leisure activities and personal life tend to perform better

in their studies. The importance of stress management in maintaining study-life balance,

as excessive stress can lead to burnout and decreased academic motivation (Simard et

al. (2019).

Furthermore, the work of Varghese and Ullas (2020) underscores the significance

of creating a structured daily routine that allows for both study and leisure. It

emphasizes the importance of time management, as students who effectively allocate

their time for study and personal activities tend to exhibit higher academic performance.
3

The importance of studying life balance for students has gained increasing

attention in recent years due to the growing pressures and demands on students in

academia. , there remains a notable research gap in understanding the nuanced factors

that influence and optimize study-life balance. While existing studies have explored the

impact of study-life balance on students' mental and physical well-being, there is a lack

of comprehensive research addressing the unique challenges faced by students in

various educational settings, including diverse cultural and socioeconomic

backgrounds .There is limited exploration into the strategies and interventions that

institutions can implement to better support students in achieving a healthy study-life

balance.

This research can shed light on the specific stressors and factors that affect

students' ability to balance their academic and personal lives. This knowledge can

inform the development of targeted interventions and support systems, which, in turn,

can enhance students' overall well-being and academic performance. Additionally, a

better understanding of study-life balance can contribute to more effective curriculum

planning, allowing educational institutions to create more accommodating learning

environments.

Moreover, addressing this research gap can promote inclusivity, considering that

students from diverse backgrounds may face unique challenges in achieving a balance.

On the flip side, one challenge is the subjectivity and variability of individual

experiences, making it difficult to generalize findings across all student populations.

Conducting longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effects of interventions can be

4

resource-intensive and time-consuming. There is also the risk of oversimplification

when proposing one-size-fits-all solutions, which may not address the complex,

multifaceted nature of this issue. Furthermore, ethical concerns arise when delving into

the personal lives of students, which necessitates a careful and responsible approach to

data collection and analysis.

This research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the

multifaceted relationship between study-life balance and academic success. The

relationship between study-life balance and academic performance is intricate. It is

crucial to explore whether a healthy balance results in improved grades or whether

achieving high grades necessitates sacrificing personal time. It's essential to analyze

whether the impact of the study-life balance differs across various academic disciplines

and the phases of a student's academic journey.

Chapter 2

FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

This chapter presents the related literature and studies on the “Impact of Study

Life Balance on Academic Performances of Grade 12 Senior High School Students in

Northern Zambales College Inc. S.Y. 2022-2023" this will be guided by a comprehensive

framework that considers various factors influencing students' study-life balance and

academic performance. The study will incorporate key elements such as time

management, gadget use regulation, the influence of social media, financial stress, and

the well-being of students. The framework will be designed to explore the interplay

between these factors and how they contribute to or detract from the academic

achievements of Grade 12 students.

Review of Related Literature and studies

In recent years, the Philippines has faced challenges in academic achievement,

worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted by the poor ranking in reading,

math, and science according to the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).

Senator Leila de Lima proposes legislation to regulate electronic gadget use among

students, acknowledging the urgent need for measures to enhance learning conditions.

(The Senate of the Philippines, 2020).

Filipino students' increasing attraction to New Zealand for its work-study-life

balance reflects a trend in international education markets. Contradictory studies on the

10

impact of social media on academic performance are noted, with a nuanced approach

suggested by Joanne Orlando from Western Sydney University. The global prioritization

of children's well-being in schools emphasizes aspects like "happiness," "confidence,"

and "health," extending beyond test scores and underlining a commitment to holistic

development (Cristina Chi, 2023). The multifaceted narrative also explores the evolving

field of Performance Studies, positive impacts of financial support on stress-management,

and workplace wellbeing services offered by organizations like Workplace Options. The

American Christian College stresses the importance of cultivating time management

skills in the fast-paced world, advocating for a balanced approach considering rest and

trust in God's provision.

Time management is fast becoming a primary priority for people in both their

personal and professional life. Projects and operations benefit from effective time

management because it lowers costs. To utilize our free time as effectively as possible is

the aim of time management (Cyril, 2015). Chase et al., (2013) emphasized that to

achieve research productivity, time management must be recognized at the educational

level as an essential element of academic achievement.

As much as any other skill, your ability to manage time throughout your study

will define your failure or success. The only necessary and un replaceable resource for

achievement is time. It is your most valuable possession. It cannot be restored or saved

after it has been lost. Everything we do requires time and with the good use of time,

comes better accomplishments. Effective time management is crucial for overall health

and a person's efficiency. One of the biggest indicators of your happiness is how much
11

control you feel over your time and your life. To make time management a lifelong habit,

you must practice self-discipline. Effective control is the ability to compel yourself to do

something, to pay the price, and to what you should do and when should you do it,

regardless of how you feel about it. This is essential for achievement. Then comes

disappointment, the misuse of someone’s time could lead to dismay. Time management is

a life skill that can help us avoid disappointment. All these things can be avoided at once

if we set aside time for careful and proper planning. Since it lowers costs, efficient time

management is advantageous for projects and operations. Managing our time well allows

us to make the most of our leisure time. Discipline is advantageous for anything. There is

no substitute for self-control. Self-control is possible if appropriate time is spent on

relevant activities. Avoiding bad things and terrible people is another way to practice

discipline.

Time management exercises will help you develop discipline in your daily life.

Another perception in time management is that working continuously is not the only

aspect of time management. It also suggests that we have free time to pursue interests or

priorities outside of our commitments. This extra time will liberate us and allow us to

relax stress-free. Simply having fun is what this is. The right activity must receive the

appropriate quantity of time. Not all of one's time should be spent at studies. There must

be designated time for family time and having fun with pals. The person can relax

because of this. It will also increase output in useful areas. Thus, giving the proper

amount of time to each activity becomes the final aspect of time management

(Chansaengsee, 2017).
12

Performance Studies, as outlined in Andreea S. Micu's book, underscores its

interdisciplinary nature and crucial role in knowledge production. It reveals the positive

impact of practical support, indicating that students receiving $250 emergency grants

were twice as likely to graduate (The Compton College study, 2016.). Various sources

highlight the contradictory studies on the impact of social media on academic

performance, with the University of Bamberg's study suggesting minimal effects on

grades for students using platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, or Instagram intensively for

school-related communication. The present study aims to observe the impact of

extracurricular activities on the academic performance of students at the secondary level

in Multan city (Anjum, 2021).

Effective time management boosts a person’s self-assurance and confidence.

Fleming (2011) said that individuals who can complete tasks within the allotted time

frame better their lives and maintain alignment not only inside their organization but also

with their colleagues and families. To succeed and improve student performance,

teachers must effectively manage their time. Razali et al., (2018) figured out the

connection between the students’ academic success and their time management. The

outcome of the factor analysis identified three key time management components, which

can be categorized as time planning, time attitudes, and time wasting. To make sure that

urgent tasks are completed first, this entails setting clear objectives and making a to-do

list (Marzano, 2017). To prevent last-minute surprises and make the most of their time,

students should organize their daily, weekly, and monthly agendas in advance.

Related Studies

The relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance

among Filipino university academic achievers is explored, emphasizing the overlooked

aspect of emotional-social growth in learning institutions (Bance & Acopio, 2016).

Senate Bill seeks to regulate gadget use among students, recognizing the influence of

technology on academic life (Inquirer News Info, 2020). Filipino students abroad face

unique challenges, providing insights into factors influencing study-life balance and

academic performance in a global context (Global Nation Inquirer, 2017). According to

Emily Fournier (2022) Maintaining Academic Work-Life Balance is Important for

Students because it reinforces students’ sense of agency and self-efficacy. In line with the

theory of self-determination, students are motivated to learn and grow when three key

psychological needs are met: control, competence, and connection. Osharive (2015)

recommended that social media should be used for educational purposes as well; Social

Networking Sites should be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance

academic activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic performance; and

Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these sites.

Research on the moderating role of external locus of hope in the relationship

between financial stress and well-being among Filipino students can inform interventions

to support Grade 12 students. Understanding the relationship between social media use

and study-life balance contributes to a comprehensive view of challenges faced by Grade

12 students (Lifestyle Inquirer, 2018). Time management is crucial for academic success,

and investigating effective time management strategies can provide practical insights into

achieving study-life balance and improving academic performance (Tuklas UP, 2016.).
14

The study suggests that academic performance is influenced by socio-economic factors

(MDPI, 2021), and investigating the socio-economic context of Grade 12 students offers

a nuanced understanding of the challenges they face in achieving study-life balance.

Examining the role of self-regulation in academic performance is crucial (SSRN,

2021), and understanding how Grade 12 students regulate their behavior and emotions in

the pursuit of study-life balance informs strategies to enhance academic outcomes. The

study emphasizes the importance of mentoring programs for student success (KNE

Publishing, 2017), and exploring the effectiveness of mentoring programs in Northern

Zambales College Inc. provides insights into the role of mentorship in supporting Grade

12 students' study-life balance. Extracurricular activities can impact academic

performance (ResearchGate, 2021), and investigating the influence of extracurricular

activities on Grade 12 students at Northern Zambales College Inc. offers insights into

the balance between academic and non-academic pursuits.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter was designed to discuss the methods that have been used in

gathering, collecting, and interpreting the data to answer the research questions of the

study. It explains the research design, sampling techniques, and data collection methods

used; and describes how data collected from the research has been analyzed.

Research Design

This study will be conducted using the descriptive design. Descriptive Part of a

study will involve the Senior High School students’ perception in the study life balance

of academic performance in Northern Zambales College Incorporated (NZCI). This study

will use a research made survey. It will involve a description, recording analysis, and

interpretation of the data facts regarding the student-respondents. Actual survey will be

given to students- respondents during the school 2023-2024, Researchers can determine

the perception of Senior High school students regarding the academic performance in

NZCI. (Brix Bernard Panuelos.,et al, 2019)

According to Voxco (2021) Descriptive research design is a type of research

design that aims to systematically obtain information to describe a phenomenon,

situation, or population. More specifically, it helps answer the what, when, where, and

how questions regarding the research problem rather than the why. So, this type of

research is used to describe and interpret the data being studied based on fact that is

supported by accurate theories. It means that descriptive research is related to the

condition occurs at that time, uses one variable or more and then investigates in fact.
20

Therefore, this study analyzed the students’ difficulties in reading report text and

the factors that were caused in report text. According to Williams (2007), descriptive

research is a type of study that looks into the circumstance where characteristics of a

specific phenomenon are identified Built on a basis of observation. Consequently, this

kind of research serves to describe and analyze the data being investigated based on

evidence that is precise theories. It implies that the condition is related to descriptive

study. Occurs at that time, makes use of one or more variables, and then looks into the

facts. As a result, this study examined the students’ struggles with report text reading.

And the causes listed in the report’s content. (Sultan, 2005).

Respondents

The population was grouped into eleven (11) strand in Senior high school students

in Northern Zambales College Incorporated namely; Accountancy, Bussiness

Management (ABM); Humanities in Social Sciences (HUMSS); Science Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Computer System Servicing (CSS); Cookery,

Bartending, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Electrical Installation and

Maintenance (EIM), Home Economics (HE) and General Academic Strand (GAS).

Northern Zambales College Incorporated (NZCI) is a private higher educational

institution in Masinloc, Zambales. It was founded in 1948 and currently offers

undergraduate programs in Elementary Education, Accountancy, Business

Administration, Criminology, Customs Administration, Hotel and Restuarant

Management, and Tourism Management. The school also has a Senior High School

department with the STEM, ABM, HUMSS, and TVL strands.

Also provided are TVET courses like Bartending, Computer Programming, and

Housekeeping, which lead to a National Certificate (NC). NZCI is officially recognized

by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Department of Education

(DepEd), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Since its establishment, it has been continuously developing its students into competent

graduates who can contribute to nation-building and thrive in their chosen professions.
22

Research Instruments

This data will make use of semi-structured review or documentation reviews

including the audio recording, note taking, interviews, observations, focus group

discussion and experiment to deeper understand the focus of this study. Qualitative

researchers use semi-structured interviews to collect new data and explore participants’

thoughts and beliefs about a particular topic. Yet, the use of open-ended questions and

training of interviewers to explore pertinent themes that may veer from the interview

guide still offers the chance to uncover fresh perspectives on the subject at hand (Bernard,

2020).

An open-ended question is a big help in data gathering to better understand

participants’ perception and provide the researchers a better and deep understanding. A

documentation review is applicable in case study which aim is to review related literature

or experiences that already existed. A focus group discussion (FGD) is a useful method

for bringing together individuals with comparable backgrounds or experiences to talk

about a particular topic of interest. A moderator (or group facilitator) leads the

participants' group, introducing discussion topics and assisting the group in having a

dynamic, organic conversation among themselves. Semi-structured interviews and

documentation reviews will be observed as part of this study, wherein the researchers will

analyze and observe how students’ perception changes about managing their time as time

goes by. Since this analysis is a qualitative, it captured the personal experiences of the

personal experiences of the participants and categorized as narrative. For the fulfillment

of this study, researched instrument such as review, interviews, audio recording, and note

taking will be observed.

23

Data Gathering Procedure
