The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an
internal choice and carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each. Read the passage carefully
and answer the questions that follow.
29. Alfred Werner's theory postulated the use of two types of linkage (primary
and secondary), by a metal atom/ion in acoordination compound. He predicted
the geonetrical shapes of a large number of coordination entities using the
property of isomerism. The valence Bond theory (V8T) explains the formation,
magnetic behaviour and geometrical shapes of coordination compounds.
However, it fails to describe the optical properties of these compounds. The
crystal field theory (CFT) explains the effect of different crystals fields (providedby
the ligands taken as point charges) on the degeneracy or d-orbital energies of the
central metal atom/ion.
Answer the following questions.
()When a coordination compound NiCl,.6H,0 is mixed with AgNO, solution two

30. Temnperature has a marked effect on the rate of reaction. For most of the
reactions, the rate of
reaction becomes nearly double for every 10 degrees risein
temperature. The effect of temperature is usually expressed in terms of
temperature coefficient. The guantitative dependence of reaction rate on
temperature was first explained by Arrhenius. Arrhenius proposed a
equation known as Arrhenius equation k = Aeta/RT This simple
equation provides a
relationship between the rate constant (k) of areaction and the
the system. Ais the Arrhenius factor or pre-exponential factor, Ea temperature
is the activation
energy and R is the gas constant.
