FLOURISHING PHILIPPINES: ACHIEVING THE UNIMAGINABLE

“Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines”

The nation’s developmental progress is one of the aspiration every land pursues to

possess. As part of the economical growth of the country, the United Nations (UN) launched

a partnership with the Philippine Government for a sustainable progressive goal of the said

nation. This development goal is planned to include everyone and everything, leaving no one

behind towards the new empowered era of the Philippines. The aim of the UN is to help

developing countries, including Philippines, to set a new living standard, whereas everyone is

pulled up equally, given the same amount of opportunities, enjoyable rights, peace, justice,

equality, and equity resulting to a flourishing Philippines.

December 2019, the world encountered a dire state of healthcare that threatened the

human health and public safety of everyone due to the emergence of Severe acute respiratory

syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that had caused a pandemic called ‘Coronavirus

disease 2019’ (COVID-19). Due to the sudden change of policies and practices, it caused a

major consequence in the economic growth of the Philippines. The outbreak of the infectious

disease brought a severe negative effect on the economic progress of the said country,

especially in the life of the people, their field of jobs, education, healthcare, and well-being.

Accoring to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for selected ASEAN countries, the

Philippines’ economic growth faltered in 2020 with over -9.6% below the usual GDP growth

— entering negative territory for the first time since 1999 — and the country experienced one

of the deepest contractions in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that year

(Asian Developmet Outlook.) The Philippines is considered as one of the fastest growing

economies in Asia and it is overwhelming for the mentioned country to be included in the

nations that faltered during the surge of COVID-19. The Philippines’ one major factor of

economic development rely on the mobility of people, however the tourism, services, and
remittances-fed growth that are all vulnerable to pandemic is critically affected. Although the

Philippines was a barely coping during the surge of COVID-19 in 2020, the country’s

economy grew to over a pace of 7.6% in 2022, the fastest rate of economic growth recorded

by the Philippines since 1976. The economy is expected to continue to grow steadily through

2023. The most recent S&P Global Philippines Manufacturing PMI survey findings for

February 2023 indicate that manufacturing production and new orders are still expanding.

The momentum of economic growth is anticipated to be supported in 2023 by ongoing

remittance inflows from workers abroad, exports from the IT-BPO industry that are rapidly

expanding, and the recovery of the tourism sector (S&P Global). Private equity investments,

the acquisition of smaller hospitals, the modernization of infrastructure, and huge hospital

groups are all contributing to the expansion of the Philippine healthcare system. With

affordable medical service rates and medical personnel that understand English, the

Philippines has been identified as a developing area for medical tourists and currently holds

the 24th place out of 46 nations in the 2020 Medical Tourism Index.

Throughout the pandemic, the Philippines have gone through unimaginable things,

overcoming fast pace changes with an unyielding mind, burning souls, and passionate hearts.

“Truly, the country is in a pivotal moment as it traverses onward in its overall health

response. To fully prepare the country, the Department has adopted the “Sulong Kalusugan”

Health Sector Strategy (HSS) for 2023 to 2028, which enables us to fast-track

implementation of Primary Health Care Packages, strengthen International Health

Regulations (IHR), and enact the DOH Policy Agenda for 2023 gearing towards a bolstered

health system in support of other outcomes. All these efforts are for the continued realization

of UHC for every Juan and Juana,” said DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Singh-

Vergeire.
