Important Places and Historical Places of Assam

1. Agnigarh

Situated in Tezpur, Agnigarh is the site of the fortress which was built by Banasura to keep
his daughter Usha in Isolation. One can get a Birds eye view of the River Brahmaputra and
the Kalia Bhomora Bridge from the Agnigarh Hill.
Its one of the Major tourist attractions of Tezpur.

2. Ajan Peer Dargah

The Dargah of Ajaan Peer, is located at Choraguri Chapori about 20Kms to the west of
Sibsagar.
It was built during the reign of King Gadadhar Singha.
Ajaan Peer ws the first saint to compose Zikirs in Assamese language.

3. Ashwaklanta or Ashwakranta Temple

This Temple is situated on the Banks of the river Brahmaputra in Guwahati.


It was constructed by the Ahom King Shiva Singha in the year 1720.
The Ashwaklanta Temple consists of two big temples.

4. Balaji Temple

This temple is situated in Betkuchi about 10 Kms from Guwahati.


It resembles the famous Tirupati Temple of the South.
It is also known as Purva Tirupati.

5. Bashishthashram

This Temple is situated in the Southernmost rim of Guwahati.


It is situated in the Sandhyachal Hills.
This temple is named after the great vedic rishi Basistha, who is said to have lived here.

6. Bhairabkunda

Bhairabkunda is at the trijunction of Bhutan, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.


It is 22 Kms from the district headquarters of the Udalguri town.
It is also the meeting point of Jia Dhansiri, Bhairavi and Daifam rivers.

7. Doul Gobinda Mandir.

This Temple is situated in the North of Guwahati.


It is situated in the foot hills of Chandrabharati Hills in Rajaduar.
This temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Krishna.

8. Deopahar Ruins.

The Ruins of an ancient temple in a hill, Deopahar is situated in Numaligarh.


It’s top provides an enchanting view of the nearby Karbianglong hills and the nearby
Numaligarh tea estate.
9. Dirgheswari Temple

This Temple is situated in the North of Guwahati.


It is considered as one of the supreme Devi Tirthas of Assam.
One of the few places of Assam where buffalo sacrifice is done annually.

10. Gandhi Mandap

It is situated at the top of the Sarania Hill, Guwahati.


This place is built in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi.
The third tallest National Flag Pole of the country is situated in the Gandhi Mandap.

11. Haflong.

It is the District Headquarters of the Dima Hasao District.


It is also known as ‘The Scotland of the East”.
It is a land of pleasing blue Orchards and Pears, Pineapples and Oranges.

12. Harangajao .

It is situated at the border of the Dima Hasao district.


Harangajao is a Dimasa word meaning “Slope of Red Soil”.
It is the largest producer of Pineapples.

13. Hayagriba Madhav Temple.

The Haygriba Madhav Temple which is considered equivalent to Jagannath Puri is


situated in Hajo.
The temple was constructed by King Raghu Deva Narayan in 1583,but some other
historians consider it to be built by Pala Dynasty in the 6th Century.
It is situated on the top of Monikut Hill, and a big pond name Madhav Pukhuri
surrounds it.

14. Jatinga.

It is a small Khasi village in the Dima Hasao District about 9kms from Haflong .
It is known throughout the world for the unexplained phenomenon of migratory
birds committing mass suicide.

15. Jogigopha.

It is a small town situated about 35 kms south of Bongaigaon.


It is an important river port and a vital trade centre.
The Naranarayan Setu connects Jogigopha with Goalpara district of Assam.

16. Joysagar Tank .

The 318 acre Joysagar tank was built by King Rudra Singha in memory of his mother
Joymati in 1697.
It signifies the noble sacrifice Sati Joymati has made for saving her husband from the
royal wrath.
17. Kamakhya Temple.

The Kamakhya Temple is located on the Nilachal Hill on the South Bank of Brahmaputra.
It is one of the fiftyone peeth’s where limbs of Sati fell as her husband Shiva carried her
dead body.
The Ambubachi festival is held here annually during the monsoons.

18. Laisong.

It is the longest Zeme- Naga Village cultural center.


It is situated 110 km from Haflong.
The biggest traditional dormitory (Hang Seuki) is situated here.

19. Madan Kamdev.

It is an archaeological site situated about 35 kms from Guwahati City .


This placed is often reffered as the Khajuraho of Assam.
Many erotic sculptures of ancient times and a museum is found here.

20. Mahabhairab Temple.

This ancient temple is located in the historic city of Tezpur.


It is believed to have been built by King Bana.
It is one of the oldest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Country.

21. Maibang.

It is a place of immense historical significance .


Maibang was the last capital of the Kachari Kingdom.
Located on the banks of the Mahur river, it is a sub- divisional town of the Dima Hasao
district.

22. Nag Sankar Devalaya.

This ancient temple is located in the present day Biswanath district.


It is believed to have been built by King Narasankar of Nagakha in the 4th Century.
The temple pond of Nagsankar Devalaya houses a rare variety Gangetic soft shell turtles.

23. Namdang Stone Bridge.

The Namdang stone bridge over the Namdang river is located in the Sivsagar district. .
The Bridge which was cut from a single stone was built during the reign of King Rudra
Singha.
The present NH 37 passes over the bridge.

24. Navagraha Temple.

As the name suggests, it’s an ancient temple of nine planets located to the east of the
Guwahati city.
It is built over the Chitrasal hill.
It was said to have been a great centre of study of astronomy and astrology of ancient times.
25. Panimoor.

Panimoor is located 120 kms away from Haflong .


The Kopili river here turns into a breathtaking waterfall
rolling over the rocks of Panimoor.
The Dimasa people consider this waterfall to be holy
and on every Magh Purnima, they take a bath at the falls.

26. Pir Majhar.

It is the Majhar(Tomb) of Hazarat Sayed Abdul Kasem Kharasani.


It is located in the heart of the Goalpara town.
It is considered a much holy place among the muslim
population of the state.

27. Poa Mecca.

Poa Mecca is a place of pilgrimage for the muslims and is situated at Hajo .
Poa Mecca has the tomb of Pir Ghiasuddin Aulia.
It is believed to have one-fourth sacredness of Mecca, so its known as Poa Mecca.

28. Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra.

It is an Assamese cultural museum situated in Panjabari,Guwahati.


It was built in the the year 1990.
It is named after the Great Vaishnavite reformer, Srimanta Sankardeva and includes an art gallery and
a children’s park.

29. Sualkuchi.

Situated about 24 km from Guwahati, Sualkuchi is a renowed centre of non-mulberry variety of silk
production .
It is also known as the ‘Manchester of the East’.
The Silk Mekhela Chador produced here is in great demand all over the world.

30. Sukreshwar Temple.

This temple is situated in Guwahati on the bank of the river Brahmaputra.


It was built by the Ahom King Pramatta Singha.
Just below the temple the North Brook Gate is situated which was built to welcome the British
Viceroy North Brooke during Bristish raaj.

31. Trimurty Udyan.

This Park is situated in the heart of the Tezpur city. .


It is named after the three jewels of Assamese culture- Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, Kalaguru
Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Natasurjya Phani Sharmah.
The Centre of the park has the statue of the three maestros overlooking the main street.

32. Umrangso.

Umrangso lies about 112 km from the Haflong town in the Dima Hasao district.
The huge hydel plant under NEEPCO in the Kopili river is situated here..
The Garampani spring which is believed to have medicinal value is located near Umrangso.
33. Umananda .

The Umananda island is the smallest river island of the world with an area of 13 Sq Kms .
It is situated in the middle of the Brahmaputra river at Guwahati.
It is fondly reffered as the Peacock Island.

34. Ugratara Temple.

The Ugratara temple is situated in the heart of the Guwahati city.


It is believed that eyes of Sati fell in this temple.
It is situated on the banks of the Jor Phukuri.

35. Silghat.

It is a vital river port situated in the Nagaon ditrict of Assam .


The Asokastami Mela is organised here atop the Samantagiri hillock.
The Assam Co-operative Jute Mill is locted here.

36. Rock Cut Caves.

The Rock cut caves is situated in Jogigopha about 30 km south of Bongaigaon.


The caves signifies the architectural excellence of the people of ancient Assam.
It dates back to the Salasthamba period.

37. Semkhor.

It the biggest village of the Dima Hasao district of Assam.


Semkhor in local Dimasa language means “Salt-well”.
During the reign of Dimasa King, salt was drawn and dried in pans and supplied to the
capital.

38. Shilpagram.

This is the only Crafts village of the North-East Zone Cultural Centre(NEZCC).
It is situated adjacent to the Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati.
It has made landmark in the promotion of varied crafts of the people of North –East.

39. Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar .


It located in the Sibsagar district of Assam.
It is a seven-storeyed building with three storeys underground known as Talatal Ghar and
the upper storeys known as Kareng Ghar. .
They were built by King Rudra Singha and had two underground tunnels that connected
the Dikhow river. These were later closed.

40. Dry Fish Market.

It is Asia’s largest dry fish market situated in Jagiroad in the Morigaon district.
Consignments of dry fish from every nook and corner of the country comes here.
Some portion of this dry fish also find its way to South Asian countries like Singapore and
Malaysia.
