Answer ALL questions
Question 1
Kim has just been hired as a new systems analyst for Expect Systems Inc. As part
of her first assignment, she has been tasked with installing a DHCP server for the
network.
a) Explain the role of DHCP server in a network [2 marks]

b) Describe problems that might be encountered in a large network with more
than 100 PCs without the use of DHCP [2 marks]
c) Kim’s manager has also tasked her with installing and configuring 2 more
server roles for the network. Explain the roles of each of the following server
roles:
i) DNS [2 marks]
ii) Active directory [2 marks]
d) Kim must create a virtual machine on a computer to run Server 2012 R2.
Describe the process of creating a Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machine
using Oracle VirtualBox. [4 marks]
e) Kim wants to set up a help desk that is responsible for only resetting user
accounts passwords but must not be able to create new user accounts.
What does she need to do? [2 marks]
f) You have just added AD DS on your server, but you receive a warning that
says “The server is not yet running as a domain controller,” Which 5 steps
would you use to promote a Windows 2012 R2 Server to become an Active
Directory Domain Services (AD DS) Domain controller? [5 marks]
g) Assuming the Active Directory domain Services role has already been
installed and the domain controller has already been powered on, write
down the steps that the administrator needs to perform to achieve the
following tasks:
(i) To create a new Organizational Unit (OU) called Marketing. [2 marks]
(ii) To create a new group called Sales under Marketing OU. [2 marks]
(iii) Add an existing user called Kim to Sales group. [2 marks]

Question 2
Create an efficient addressing scheme for the following LAN segments using
192.168.1.0/24:
• Net 1 with 110 hosts
• Net 4with 12 hosts
Begin by using the zero subnet for the largest LAN. Answer the following
questions:
a)
i) In what class is this IP address? [1 mark]
ii) If you were going to use fixed length subnet mask, what subnet mask
would you use? [2 marks]
iii) What is the disadvantage of using fixed length subnet mask in this
scenario [2 marks]
b) Implement Variable Length Subnet Mask for this network and for each
subnet find
1) Subnet mask [5 marks]

2) Network id [5 marks]
3) Broadcast id [5 marks]
4) Range of usable IP addresses [5 marks]

Question 3
a) From your knowledge of the Gigabit Ethernet architecture, justify the

need to have the following sub-layers: Physical Medium Dependent
(PMD), Physical Medium Attachment (PMA) and Physical Coding Sub-
layer (PCS). [6 marks]
b) Explain why Gigabit Ethernet frame format and Ethernet frame format
are the same. [2 marks]
c) One of the changes made in the MAC sub-layer was to switch to the full
duplex mode, discuss the impact of the change on Gigabit Ethernet.
[4 marks]
d) Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3z) standard has three connectivity options;
namely 1000BaseSX, 1000BaseLX and 1000BaseCX. Describe these three
(3) media connectivity options and for each option explain the setup
where it would be the most suitable to be used. [6 marks]
e) The original Ethernet was defined by IEEE as 802.3. Give any six (6)
reasons that led many organizations to switch to the use of the Gigabit
Ethernet (IEEE802.3Z). [6 marks]

a) Describe how roaming is supported when a device moves from one
Basic Service Set to another in the IEEE802.11 (WiFi) standard. [6 marks]
b) Explain the importance of the following station services in a wireless LAN.
i) Authentication [2 marks]
ii) De-authentication [2 marks]
iii) Privacy [2 marks]

c) Use the diagram below to answer question 3 c(i).
i) Discuss the hidden node problem amongst the wireless nodes A, B
and C in a Wireless LAN (IEEE802.11).

ii) Using a diagram, illustrate how the Request To Send/Clear To Send

(RTS/CTS) technique reduces the hidden node problem in WLAN
(802.11) standard. [5 marks]
d) Briefly explain any five (5) challenges that could be faced by an
organisation that is planning to use wireless technology? [5 marks]
