History of Olympics
The Olympic Games are an athletic festival that originated in ancient Greece and were
revived in the late 19th century. They are the world’s foremost sports competition and include
athletes from all over the world. The first written official Olympics Games was held in 776 BC
in honor of god Zeus and is held every four years. It was organized by Ancient Greeks which
demonstrated the importance of linking sport and culture.

In 393 AD, the Roman Emperor Theodosius banned the Olympics Games for religious
reasons, claiming that it encouraged paganism. The Olympics was revived at the first Olympic
Congress which was organized by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The games were held at the
Grand Amphitheatre at the Sorbonne University from the 16th to 23rd June 1894 after which
the International Olympic Committee was created. The guided principles of the Olympics are:

● Promoting the development of the physical and mental qualities that form the
foundation of the sport.
● Educating young people through sport in the spirit of mutual understanding and
friendship with a view to help build a better, more peaceful world.
● Sharing the Olympic ideal with the whole world and creating an international sense of
goodwill.
● Bring together athletes from all over the world for a major celebration of sport every
four years.

The Olympics Rings

The Olympics rings are the official symbol of the Olympic Movement. There are five
interlocking rings of the colors blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The rings are set upon a
white background. These rings represent the five parts of the world joined together in the
Olympic movement. It represents the union of the Americas, Africa, Asia, Oceania and
Europe; and was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1913.

haut, Plus fort – Ensemble”.On July 20th, the International Olympic Committee approved a

Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games traditionally offers the host city the opportunity
to celebrate sporting excellence and international unity while presenting to the world a
flattering portrait of its own nation.
It takes place after great planning is concluded. This is done by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC). Every detail, from the moment when the chief of state of the host country is
received by the president of the IOC and the organizing committee at the entrance of the
stadium to the end of the proceedings, and when the last team flies out.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on 26th July across Paris
starting at 7:30 pm Paris time. As mandated, the ceremony included showcasing the host
country culture, the parade of athletes and the lighting of the cauldron. The games were
formally opened by the president of France, Emmanuel Macron.
For the first time in the history of the Olympic Summer Games, The Opening Ceremony will
be held outside of a stadium. It was held in the heart of the city along the Seine.

Each national delegation was paraded by boats along the Seine, dressed in their official
uniform.

11
The boats were equipped with cameras to allow viewers to see the athletes up close. This
unique setting had athletes from over two-hundred countries parading through Paris in eight-
five boats, moving through six hundred kilometers of the river passing through famous
landmarks such as: Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, and the Grand Palais.

The artistic portion of the ceremony was divided into twelve which reflected the culture of
France and its history. There were also musical performances by French and international
musicians.
The event started with a performance from Lady Gaga setting the festive tone for the event.
And closed with a performance from Celine Dion

The ceremony empathized with inclusion which attracted mixed reviews, some praising its
grand finale, others criticized the length of the ceremony and other production issues brought
about by the format. The ceremony was open to as many people as possible. Eight giant
screens and strategically placed speakers allowed everyone to enjoy the magical atmosphere
throughout the French capital and around the world.
The ceremony concluded with the President of Paris 2024 Organizing Committee Tony
Estanguet welcoming athletes and encouraging them to embrace the city and their moment in
history.
