-to maintain (v): to continue to have; to keep in existence, or not allow to become less duy

e.g. The army has been brought in to maintain order in the region.
- to intoxicate (v): (of alcohol or drugs) to cause somebody to lose control of their behaviour
or their physical and mental abilities làm say, làm nhiễm độc
e.g. The drug has the power to heal or intoxicate.
- respectable (adj): considered by society to be acceptable, good or correct đáng tôn trọng,
đáng kể
e.g. This part of the city has become quite respectable in the last ten years.
- intimacy (n): the state of having a close personal relationship with somebody sự thân mật ,
thân thiết
e.g. It was obvious from their intimacy that they had been good friends for many years.
-to fabricate (v): to invent or produce something false in order to deceive someone bịa đặt,
làm giả
e.g. He claims that the police fabricated evidence against him.
-to mount (v): to organize and begin an activity or event tạo ra , tạo dựng nên
e.g. The World Health Organisation mounted a campaign to eradicate the wild polio virus
from the world by 2005.
- to be on the rocks: a relationship or business that is on the rocks is having difficulties and is
likely to fail soon dễ đổ vỡ, nguy cấp
e.g. There had been signs that their marriage was on the rocks for years.
- underway (adj): having started and in progress; being done or carried out đang được tiens

e.g. The project is already underway, with work due to be completed by early next year.
- to take a/its toll (on somebody/something): to have a bad effect on somebody/something;
to cause a lot of damage, deaths, pain, etc.gây thiệt hại cho
e.g. Illness had taken a heavy toll on her health.
- stiff (adj): severe and difficult mạnh mẽ
e.g. There has been stiff opposition to the proposed tax increases.
- to embark (v): to go onto a ship
e.g. We embarked at Liverpool for New York.

-to embark on/upon sth: to start something new or important


e.g. The company has recently embarked on a new venture.
-to be high spirits (n): if someone is in high spirits, they are extremely happy and having a
good time
e.g. They'd had a couple of drinks and were in high spirits.
- aptitude (n): a natural ability or skill → khả năng, kỹ năng to have an aptitude for
e.g. We will take your personal aptitudes and abilities into account.
-to rule out sth: to stop considering something as a possibility xóa bỏ
e.g. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the man was murdered.
- to make ends meet: to earn just enough money to be able to buy the things you need
e.g. It’s not easy to make ends meet with a big family, but somehow we manage.
To feel it in your bones :to believe something strongly although you cannot explain why: có
linh cảm, linh tính về một điều gì sẽ xảy ra trong tương lai.
E.g :It's going to be a good summer - I can feel it in my bones.
To cross my heart:said to show that what you have just said or promised is completely true
or sincere Xin thề thật lòng;
E.g:Don’t tell anyone else about this, will you?’ ‘Cross my heart, I won’t.’
To keep a straight face:to manage to stop yourself from smiling or laughing: tự kiềm chế để
giữ một bộ mặt bình thản, không cười.
e.g.She tried to keep a straight face but, unable to contain herself, burst into laughter.
To have a strong stomach: to be able to smell, taste, or see unpleasant things without feeling
ill or upset: có khả năng trải qua hoặc chứng kiến thứ gì đó khó chịu mà không cảm thấy khó
chịu
e.g.You need to have a very strong stomach to watch some of the surgery scenes.
would (just) as soon:If you would (just) as soon do something or would sooner do
something, you would prefer to do it rather than something else that is possible: muốn làm gì
e.g."Would you like to go out for dinner?" "I'd just as soon stay in - I'm not feeling very
well."
To go off something: be bored of something,to stop liking or being interested in someone or
something: chán
e.g.I went off beefburgers after I got food poisoning from a takeaway.
To poke fun at someone/something to make someone or something seem ridiculous by
making jokes about the person or thing: chế nhạo , trêu chọc
e.g.Late night comedy shows often poke fun at politicians.
