Review of the previous lesson
A. Activity
Begin with a demonstration using a prism to split white light into its
component colors. Discuss how this shows the visible part of the
electromagnetic spectrum.
Ask students to name other types of electromagnetic waves they know
and where they might encounter them in everyday life. Introduce the
electromagnetic spectrum and its different regions.
B. Analysis
Use a projector to show a video or animation explaining the
electromagnetic spectrum, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared,
visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Discuss the properties of each type of wave, such as wavelength,
frequency, and energy. Highlight real-world applications, like microwaves
in cooking, UV light in sterilization, and X-rays in medical imaging.
Use an online simulation to visualize the electromagnetic spectrum and
the different properties of each type of wave.
C. Abstraction
Divide students into small groups and assign each group an experiment to
demonstrate the properties of different electromagnetic waves.
Use a radio to explore how different frequencies correspond to different
stations.
Demonstrate how microwaves heat food by placing different materials in a
microwave (with appropriate safety precautions).
Use a remote control to show how infrared light can transmit signals.
Use prisms and diffraction gratings to explore the visible spectrum.
Use UV light to make fluorescent materials glow.
Groups conduct their experiments and record their observations on the
worksheet.
D. Application
Each group presents their experiment to the class, explaining how it
demonstrates the properties and applications of their assigned type of
electromagnetic wave.
Facilitate a discussion on the different experiments presented. Encourage
students to ask questions and provide feedback.
Have students write a short reflection on what they learned from the
activity and how it helped them understand the electromagnetic spectrum.
IV. Assignment
Research a specific application of electromagnetic waves, such as their use in
communication technology or medical imaging, and present their findings in a follow-up
class.
