7 Two particles, A and B, are moving towards each other on a smooth

horizontal surface.

Particle A has speed 5 ms-1 and mass 0.5 kg.

Particle B has speed 3 ms-1 and mass 0.2 kg.

The coe cient of restitution between the particles is e.

The particles then collide.

a) Find the magnitude of the total momentum of the particles before

the collision.

8 A smooth solid hemisphere of radius 6 m and centre O is resting on

horizontal ground with its at face in contact with the ground.

A particle P of mass 2 kg is resting on the hemisphere when it starts to

slip from rest at the highest point, A, directly above O.

a) If the hemisphere stays in a xed position, nd an expression for

the normal reaction force of the particle to the surface of the
hemisphere when the angle between OA and OP is θ

d) The particle leaves the surface of the hemisphere at a point C

and then hits the ground for the rst time at a point D. Find the
distance of the particle from the centre of the hemisphere to D.

b) One end of a light elastic string of natural length 1.2 m and

modulus of elasticity 60 N is attached to a xed point O at the
top of a stairwell.

10 A pendulum consists of a particle of mass m, suspended at the end of

a light, rigid, bar.

The pendulum initially hangs at rest and is then displaced through a

small angle θ and released to make small oscillations.

NB: In this question take g = 10 ms-2

a) Jim believes that the formula for the periodic time, T, of the
pendulum is of the form

T = km αl β g γ

where k is a constant and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

Use dimensional analysis to nd the values for α, β and γ.
