OBJECTIVE

✔ To get acquainted with different breeds of horses along with


their identifying features.
INDIGENOUS BREED OF HORSES
MARWARI

✔ Origin: Marwar & Mewar (Rajasthan)


✔ Distribution: Udaipur, Jalore, Jodhpur, Nagore, Pali, Sirohi,
Barmer, Jaisalmer and Rajsammand districts of Rajasthan.
✔ Body colour: Brown, Chestnut, liver chestnut, black, piebald and
skewbald.
MARWARI
✔ Average height: 15 H
✔ Face: Chiselled shaped, slightly longish, pointed with
round nostrils and large expressive ears.
✔ Ear : Ear tips pointed, curved inward like sickle,
meet/overlap while rotating.
✔Utility: Riding, sports and safari
KATHIAWARI

✔ Origin: Saurashtra province (Gujarat)


✔ Distribution: Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Surendranagar, Junagarh
and Amreli districts of Gujarat.
✔ Body colour: Chestnut, bay, grey and dun.
KATHIAWARI
✔ Average height: 13-15 H
✔ Features: broad forehead & mandible, large expressive eyes, small
muzzle, big nostrils with thin edge, shorter face and shorter back
with concave profile, forehead & poll gives triangular appearance,
short neck like cock, short leg and squared quarters.

✔ Origin: Tibet
✔ Distribution: Pin valley of Spiti Division of Lahul and adjoining
areas of Kullu and Kinnaur Divisions of Himachal Pradesh.
✔ Body colour: Grey, black, brown and dun.
✔ Average height: 12 H
✔ Features: Sure footed having rounded foot, short legs, joints covered
with long coarse hairs, short neck, long-thin mane, deep chest, short
back, strong loin, shoulder & croup sloping.
✔ Tail: straight & longer almost touching the ground.
✔ Utility: pack animal & riding
ZANSKARI
✔ Origin & Distribution: Leh & Laddakh areas of J&K.
✔ Body colour: Grey, black and copper.
✔ Average height: 13-14.7 H
✔ Features: Hardy and ability to work at high altitude, wide face,
predominant eyes.
✔ Tail: Long & heavy almost touching the ground.
✔ Utility: draught, transport, riding & polo.

MANIPURI (Pony)
✔ Origin & Distribution: Manipur and Assam.
✔ Descend: Asiatic wild horse & Arabian horse
✔ Body colour: Bay , brown, grey or chestnut.
✔ Average height: 11-13 H
✔ Ears: alert & almond shaped
✔ Features: Muzzle wider, nose bit convex.
✔ Utility: Riding & polo.
BHUTIA (Pony)
✔ Origin & Distribution: Sikkim and Darjeeling.
✔ Body colour: Grey or Bay.
✔ Average height: 13 H
✔ Look: like Tibetan pony but larger & thicker version of Spiti.
✔ Features: strong legs, long hairs on neck & tail.
✔ Utility: Pack and riding in hilly terrain.
Chummarti (pony)
✔ Origin & Distribution: Chummarti valley of Tibet & H.P. (Kinnaur
dist.).
✔ Body colour: Grey or Bay.
✔ Average height: 13 H
✔ Look: like Spiti.

1. Draft Type
✔ Clydesdale, Shire, Belgian, Percheron etc.
✔ Heavily muscled, large framed, large boned.
✔ Used primarily for pulling and driving

✔ Quarter Horse, Paint, Appaloosa etc.
✔ Well-muscled, deep bodied.
✔ Used primarily for short-distance racing, ranch work, trail
riding, roping, reining, pleasure and gymkhana events.

3. Saddle (Gaited) Type
✔ Tennessee Walker, American Saddlebred, Standardbred etc.
✔ Longer muscled, longer neck and body, higher set arching neck,
higher tail carriage, often more animated movement.
✔ Used primarily for pleasure, driving, endurance and trail.

4. Sport Horse Type
✔ Thoroughbred, Arabian, Warmbloods, Hanoverian and
Trakhener etc.
✔ Larger, longer bodies, deeper heart girth and longer muscled.
✔ Used primarily for racing, jumping, cross-country, three day
eventing, dressage, pleasure, and endurance.

5. Pony Type
✔ Welsh, Shetland Pony, etc.
✔ 14.2 hands or less, usually resemble stock type or saddle type
breeds.
✔ Generally shorter neck and body.
✔ Used primarily for children’s mounts and driving.
ARABIAN
✔ Bred by the Arabs to carry them swiftly over long distances with
a minimum of feed and water.
✔ Arabian horse has an unsurpassed reputation for soundness and
stamina.
✔ The Arabian is a very attractive horse with its distinctive, dished
face and proud carriage.
✔ It is usually solid bay, chestnut, black or grey in colour.
THROUGHBRED
✔ Development: Arabian x European horses.
✔ Registration: Stud Book Authority of India (RWITC), Pune.
✔ Known for: speed and stamina.
✔ Features: long-bodied, deep-chested, angular conformation
enables it to run long distances at a fast speed.
