About email
verification codes and
resetting two-step
verification

Android iOS

Two-step verification is an optional feature

that adds more security to your WhatsApp
account.

You’ll see the two-step verification screen

after you successfully register your phone
number on WhatsApp. Learn how to
enable two-step verification.

When you enable two-step verification,

you have the option to enter your email
address. Entering your email will add an
extra safeguard to help you recover your
account, even without a connection for
SMS or a phone call. For example, if you
ever forget your PIN or need to re-register
your phone number, you'll be able to use
your verified email to get back into your
account.

You can also add your email at any time

by going to your WhatsApp Settings >
Account > Email Address. You’ll get a
verification code sent to your email so that
we can verify it’s you.

How to re-register using an email

verification code

This applies when you're re-registering on

WhatsApp. For example, when you log
into your existing WhatsApp account on a
new phone.

1. Ensure your phone has a strong

internet connection.

2. Open WhatsApp.

3. Follow the steps to register your

phone number.

4. You’ll receive a 6-digit registration

code via email once you enter
your phone number.

5. Enter your 6-digit code to

complete registration.

Note:

You'll only be able to receive a

code via email for re-registration if
you’ve added and verified your
email address in your WhatsApp
settings, during your initial
registration, or during two-step
verification setup.
If you don’t receive your code, you
can request a new one by email,
SMS or phone call. Depending on
your carrier, you may be charged
for SMS and phone calls.

Reset your two-step verification PIN

If you've previously added your email

address, you can reset the PIN by
requesting a new one via SMS. You'll
need to have two-step verification enabled
to complete these steps. Learn how to
reset your PIN in this help article.

Note: If you don’t receive your code, tap

Didn’t receive a verification code? and
request a new code by email, SMS or
phone call. Depending on your carrier, you
may be charged for SMS and phone calls.

If you have a new SIM, it’s possible that

the number was used before. If that’s the
case, the previous owner of that phone
number may have created a WhatsApp
account and set up two-step verification
with an email address.

In this case, you’ll need to wait seven

days after you’ve registered before you
can reset your two-step verification PIN.
