I.Short Answers
1) What are the properties of a magnet?
• Magnet has two poles north and South Pole.
• Same poles of two magnets repel each other.
• Opposite poles of two magnets attract each other.
• It is composed of oxides of iron, so it always attract iron particles.
2) What are magnetic and non- magnetic materials ? Give some examples.
• Materials which get attracted by the magnet are called magnetic materials. Eg:Iron, cobalt and
nickel.
• Materials which are not attracted by magnet are called non-magnetic materials. Eg: Rubber, Cotton,
Plastic, Wood.
3) Why does bar magnet always point in north-south directions?
• Bar magnet always points in north-south directions when left freely suspended.
• Because earth itself behaves like a magnet .
• North-pole of bar magnet is attracted towards south-pole of earth’s magnet and vice versa.
4) Where are the poles of a circular magnet? How will you find this?
• Ring type or circular magnet also has two poles.
• Its exterior and interior parts act like different poles.
• To find out the nature of the two poles, we suspend circular magnet with a piece of thread.
• We bring another magnet near it. Both attract each other.
5) How magnets lose their property?
Magnets lose their property if they are heated, hammered, dropped from some height or not stored
properly.
6) Write any two uses of magnet.
• Magnetic compass can be used to know about the directions.
• Magnet can be used to separate magnetic materials such as iron from the non-magnetic ones.
7) What is a magnetic compass?
Magnetic compass is a small box with glass cover. It consists of a magnetised needle, which rotates
freely and indicates north south direction when comes to rest.
8) Difference between natural and artificial magnets.
Natural magnet Artificial magnet
A magnet which comes naturally Magnets produced by the action
from the earth. of electrical circuits.
For example, lodestone. For example, electromagnet.
II.Long answers.
1) What care should be taken while handling magnets?
Magnets should be handled with caution to avoid losing their magnetic properties. The following are
some precautions to take when handling the magnet:
a) Magnets should never be fired, hammered, or thrown from a great height.
b) Magnets should be stored in pairs, with opposite poles facing each other.
c) A piece of wood must be used to separate the magnets, with a piece of soft iron placed across their
ends.
d) A piece of iron should be kept across the poles of a horse-shoe magnet.
e) We should keep magnets away from televisions, laptops, CDs, cassette tapes, mobile phones, and
music systems.
2) How can we convert and iron strip into a temporary magnet?
The procedures for converting an iron strip into a temporary magnet are:
1. Keep the iron strip on a solid surface.
2. Take the bar magnet and gently rub it along the length of the iron strip.
3. Repeat this activity for about 20 – 30 times.
4. In order to test whether the iron strip has become a magnet or not, bring some iron nails near it
and observe.
In this way, an iron strip can be converted into a temporary magnet.
