ABSTRACT

Structural analysis is a branch which involves in the determination of behaviour of structures

in order to predict the responses of different structural components due to effects of loads.
Each and every structure will be subjected to either one or the groups of loads, the various
kinds of loads normally considered are dead load, live load, seismic load, and wind load.
ETABS (Extended 3-Dimensional analysis of building system) is a software which is
incorporated with all the major analysis engines that is static, dynamic, linear and non-linear,
etc. and especially this software is used to analyse and design the buildings.

Our project Analysis and design of multi storey building using ETABS software is an attempt
to analyse and design a multi storey building for only gravity loads using ETABS. A G+3
multi storeyed building is considered for this study. The multi storey building is assumed to
be constructed in CHODAVARAM, as per design codes.

1. MULTI STOREY BUILDING

1.1 INTRODUCTION

A multi-storey building is a building that has multiple storeys, and typically contains vertical
circulation in the form of ramps, stairs and lifts.

The number of storeys is determined according to the diagram below:

Fig 1: Number of storeys in building

Multi storey structures have fascinated mankind from the beginning of civilization. The
development of the multi storey building has followed the growth of the city closely. The
process of urbanisation, that started with the age of industrialisation, is still in progress in
1
developing countries like India. Industrialisation causes migration of people to urban centres
where job opportunities are significant. The land available for buildings to accommodate this
migration is becoming scarce, resulting in rapid increase in the cost of land. Thus, developers
have looked to the sky to make their profits. The result is multistoreyed buildings, as they
provide a large floor area in a relatively small area of land in urban centres.

1.2 CLASSIFICATIONS OF MULTI STOREY BUILDING

Classifications of multi-storey buildings include:

Low-rise: A building which is not tall enough to be classified as high-rise.

Mid-rise: A buildings of 5 to 10 storeys, equipped with lifts.
High-rise: A building more than 7 to 10 storeys.
Skyscraper: A building 40 storeys or more.
Supertall: A building exceeding 300 m height.
Megatall: A building exceeding 600 m height.

1.3 NEED FOR MULTI STOREY BUILDING

Instead of building more houses, stacking more floors on top of each other would save the
space. Another reason is due to overpopulation. As more and more people come to the cities
in search of better life, more housing is needed in order to house them. Hence, many houses
in the city have multi-storeyed buildings.

Due to the increase of population around the world the people from the different areas are
coming to the developed urban areas in order to find the opportunities for betterment of their
living. Due to this there is a rise in the urban area population, which in turn creates scarcity of
land for creating shelters. In order to counter this the people started to build in the vertical
direction which brought multistorey buildings into existence.

Multistorey buildings more about power, prestige status, where they play an important role in
meeting occupier demand for large prestigious headquarters, aesthetics than efficient
development.

2. ETABS

2.1 INTRODUCTION TO ETABS

ETABS is an engineering software product that caters to multi storeyed building analysis and
design. Modelling tools and templates, code-based load prescriptions, analysis methods and
solution technique all co-ordinate with the grid-like geometry unique to this class of structure.
The abbrevated form of ETABS is EXTENDED THREE-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS OF
BUILDING SYSTEM which is used for structural analysis of building or any structure.

ETABS software was made by COMPURTES AND STRUCTURES.INC.

MAJOR FEATURES OF ETABS:

1)Make a model of a structure

2)Assign loads
3)Run structural analysis
4)View analysis result
5)Perform structural design
6)Check required reinforcements
7)Run design check and generate reinforcement detailing diagrams

Following things are achieved by using ETABS software:

➢ We can check stability of structure.

➢ We can view and manipulate the analytical model with great accuracy.
➢ It analyses and checks the load bearing capacity of building structures.
3
➢ It is used for the analysis of concrete shear walls and concrete moment frames.

Fig 3. ETABS Software

2.2 STEPS INVOLVED IN ETABS

Fig 4. Steps involved in ETABS

4
This can also be called as process of structural design of a multi storey building in ETABS.
The above steps clearly address or define “Geometry of the structure, where we can set the
geometry of the grid and defining the material of the members used in the building
followed by section dimension of each member like columns and beams. After defining
the material draw the members on the building using defined properties, then apply
loads.”

2.2.1 INITIAL SETUP OF STANDARD CODES

Initially the units are set to Metric SI and Indian codes are selected as shown in figure
5, so in this figure for concrete design for framed sections IS 456:2000 is selected and for steel
design for rebar reinforcement which is plotted in tension and compression sides of the framed
sections is IS 800:2007.

“Use built-in settings with→Units(Metric SI)→Steel design code(IS

800:2007)→Concrete design code(IS 456:2000)”

Fig.5 Initial setup of standard codes and country codes in ETABS

2.2.2 CREATION OF GRID POINTS

After specifying the standard codes to the software, now for multi storey building grid
lines and storey data should be assigned, from the below fig 6, we can observe the creation of
grid points and creation storey data according to the project plan or we can also select using
“Custom grid spacing” in which it gives clear idea about the grid points either by ordinates
or spacing between columns.

5
Fig .6 Creation of grid points in ETABS

2.2.3 DEFINING MATERIAL PROPERTIES

Defining material property is very important in ETABS because, the assigned property
that will act in analysis part for the structure. From the below fig 7,8,9 represents the assigning
of material property for concrete and steel. After assigning the properties we can also modify
the properties as you can see an “Modify/Show Material property design data”.

6
Fig .7 Material property Fig.8 Material property for concrete

Fig .9 Material property for steel or Rebar

2.2.4 DEFINING SECTION PROPERTIES

• In section properties, the assigning includes the shape of columns and beams. Generally
7
the framed sections include beams and columns in which the desired shape like
Rectangle, circle, etc are included for columns and for beams , rectangle shape is mostly
preferred cause as beams are bending members , stability critertia due to Moment of
inertia is mostly satisfied by a rectangular member.
• Similarly, after defining the section properties and shape, now “Add new property”
in which dimensions of beam and column are negotiated or implemented, as follows
below figure12.

Fig.10 Section property Fig.11 Shape of framed sections

Fig.12 Dimensions of beam and column

8
2.2.5 SLAB SECTIONS

• After assigning the section properties, now from the same section properties,
select the slab sections in which the “Add property” must be added for the
software (i.e) Slab property.
• Now name the property as your intelligence and the modelling type for the Slab
should be Shell-thin , and finally from the fig 14 , the thickness of the slab is
mentioned in ‘mm’, enter the thickness as per code assigned, and hence the slab
property is added to the software.

Fig.13 Slab sections Fig.14 Slab property data

2.2.6 ASSIGNING OF PROPERTIES

• The below figure 15 represents the assigning of properties for both columns and
beams in ETABS17.In ETABS, the property assigning of both beams and
columns proceeds only if we assign section properties for frame sections. In
ETABS, initially using the cursor select the “Quick draw beam and column”
options that present in left task bar in which initially select all “All storeys” in
right bottom of ETABS , then draw the columns and beams according to the plan
or grid position.
9
• And similarly, while drawing the beams and columns, carefully select the
property like Beam or column is asserted to that section as per fig 15.
• For assigning property for slab, select “All Storeys” then using “Quick draw
floor” commant draw the floors in the plan in ETABS. But the ground floor
doesn’t contain slab so deselect or delete the slab as per fig 16.

Fig.15 Assigning of properties to beam and columns

10
Fig.16 Assigning of property to slabs

2.2.7 ASSIGNING OF SUPPORTS

• For assigning of supports for multi storey building, initially assure that the
supports are only assigning to the bottom floor or basement, in which it indicates
the perfect foundation for the structure or multi storey building.

• “Assign→Joints→Restraints→Fixed joint→Apply”.

• After selecting the joint, make sure to select the basement or bottom floor in
which joints must be assigned.

11
Fig.17 Assigning of joint Fig.18 Type of joint

3. LOAD PATH

3.1 LOAD TRANSFER IN MULTI STOREY BUILDING

Loads are efficiently transferred through frames.

Load Bearing Elements:

1)Beams – resist loads perpendicular to their axis.

2)Columns – Transmits the loads through axial compression.
3)Slab – Carry the floral load and transfers it to the beams.
4)Footing – Transfers the load to the superstructure to the soil.

Non-Load Bearing Elements:

Walls and claddings are the non-load bearing elements. The only purpose is to cover the
building and don’t participate in load transfer.

3.2 GRAVITY LOAD PATH

➢ In the gravity load path, the vertical loads acts on the slabs which is transferred to the
beams and then to columns and then to foundations and from foundation it is transferred to the
earth or soil.

12
➢ The gravity loads mainly includes the Human loads (Live load), Dead load, super dead
load (Floor finish).

Slabs Beams Columns Foundation

Fig.19 Gravity load path

3.3 LOAD ON MULTI STOREY BUILDING (gravity loads)

There are different type of loads acting on this structure:

▪ Dead Loads
▪ Live Loads
▪ Super dead loads (Floor finish)
Gravity load refers to load that doesn’t change over time. In engineering, gravity loads
require less factor of safety when compared to dynamic loads. Gravity loads mainly are the
static loads which comprises of dead load, live load, super deadload loads.

13
DEAD LOAD: Dead loads refer to loads that relatively don’t change over time, such as
flooring material self-weight of the beams, columns, furniture etc.

LIVE LOAD: Live loads are the moving loads which change over the period of time.
Humans are the example of the live loads.

SUPER DEAD LOAD: Super dead load is the load which comprises on the structure due to
floor finish.

These loads act on different parts of the structure. So, they can be classified as
▪ Frame loads
▪ Shell loads

Frame loads: Frame loads are the loads on the beams coming from the weight of the walls

3.3.1 APPLICATION OF FRAME LOAD IN ETABS

E.g., 1:
➢ Weight of the wall = (3-0.45) x0.23x19.8 → [(no.of storey-depth of beam) x width of
beam
= 11.61kN/m x19.8]

➢ Weight of parapet wall on the top floor = 0.15x19.8 → [ parapet wall is the wall that
is present
=2.97kN/m on top floor (i.e) outer wall]

➢ Self-weight of column=0.3x0.5x25
=3.75kN/m

➢ Self-weight of beam =0.23x0.45x25

=2.58kN/m

Fig.20 Frame load on multi storey building

14
In ETABS17, go to Assign option and select Frame loads, and further select Distributed
load. Because the load distribution that takes place in the structure is in uniformly distributed
load, and the load value of UDL that takes place in framed members are calculated as per
above e.g,1.

Fig.21 Assigning frame load to the structure

Shell loads: Shell loads are the loads that come from the live load in the structure that is
distributed from slab to beams and beams to column and column to foundation. So intimately
the live load that takes place in slab is called Shell load.

3.3.2 APPLICATION OF SHELL LOAD IN ETABS

E.g.,2:
➢ The uniformly distributed load for residential buildings
Should be taken as 2kN/m^2 – 3kN/m^2 (IS 875 PART2)

➢ Hence, we considered live loads to be 2kN/m^2

➢ Consider water proofing load of 1kN/m^2on the top floor

Because there is no Live load on top floor.

15
Fig.22 Assigning shell load to structure

3.4 DEFINING LOAD COMBINATIONS AND LOAD PATTERN

Initially before assigning the loads to structure, defining the load pattern is must and should.
We already know that ETABS will assign its self-load to the structure automatically, there by
initially creating or defining the loads that act in structure. As gravity load consists, dead load
and live load and super dead load. As per figure 23, Load patterns are defined in ETABS17.

Fig.23 Defining load pattern

16
Fig.24 Load combinations

After defining the load pattern, now click on “ADD” in which indicates the assigning of load
combinations to the structure. Initially including the factor for safety to the combinations, that
indicates the structure can sustain more loads (i.e) more bending…etc. From the above fig 24
three combinations for made and named as “ENVELOPE”. An Envelope indicates the
combination of three load cases which can sustain or able to stable the structure during max
bending and shear.

4. ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF STRUCTURE

The structure can be easily analysed by simply clicking “Analyze” option in ETABS, before
running the analysis you have to check the model if it has any errors, if it displays no errors,
then the structure is safe and “Displacement diagram, Bending moment, Shear force
diagram” of the structure can be seen after clicking Analyze option.

In designing criteria, select the “Design” option in top task bar of ETABS after click
“Concrete frame design→Rebar selection for beams and columns”. As per Indian standard
codes, no. of rebars and diameter of rebars in both compression and tension side of the beam
and min and max spacing of stirrups are decided or assumed as per calculation for good design
of the structure.

II. PROJECT REPORT

II-1 DESCRIPTION OF BUILDING MODEL

• In the present study, a G+3 storeyed building model is taken for analysis and
design. The building is being constructed in CHODAVARAM. The general
features of the building model and beam sections are studied in building plan.

18
• Whereas the building plan that is selected for the application is going to be
constructed in CHODAVARAM.

• The grades of reinforcing steel and concrete used in the building are assumed to
be of Fe550 and M30 for concrete respectively. The plan of the building model
indicating the Beam and Column schedule is shown in below Figure 7.

Fig .27 Project plan

19
II-2 BEAM COLUMN LAYOUT PLAN

Fig .28 Beam column layout of the multi stored building

• The above diagram is generated in ETABS using “Quick Draw beam and Quick
Draw column” cursor in ETABS software. And the column positions in the plan are plotted
according to Room plans.

• And the distance between the columns is decided according to the project plan.

• In section properties, “Define →Section properties→Frame sections→Rectangular

shape”, which indicates that the beam and column are in the shape of Rectangle shaped.

• After assigning or defining all the material and section properties in ETABS, the
dimensions of beam and column are assumed as per code, (Say) BEAM - 230 x 450 mm
COLUMN - 300 x 500 mm

• Similarly in “Define→Section properties→Slab sections→Add new property”And

Slab thickness is assumed as 150mm.
20
II-3 Assigning of Supports

Fig .29 Assinging of fixed support to the ground floor

➢ For every multi storyed building, the foundation is very important and here in this case
the supports assigned are fixed supports .

➢ From ETABS software, as above diagram select the option Restraints and click “Fixed
support”.

21
Fig.30 Fixed support is assigned to ground floor or Base in multi storyed building

From the figure 13, the supports are assigned. But while assigning the supports in ETABS we
must ensure that only the ground floor is selected for assigning supports, cause only buttom
floor consists of supports. So, while assigning the supports to the ground floor, initially select
the ground floor (i.e) columns.

CONCLUSION

As an undergraduate of GAYATRI VIDYA PARISHAD COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

(AUTONOMOUS) I would like to say that this online course is anexcellent opportunity for
us to get to the ground level and learn the things that we would have never gained through
straight into a job. I am grateful to the DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING,
GAYATRI VIDYA PARISHAD COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING(AUTONOMOUS) and
UDEMY platform for giving us a wonderful opportunity.

The main objective is to enhance skills to observe, learn and practice the engineering
applications and experience technical aspects. I feel I got the maximum out of this course, also
learnt the way of work and theimportance of the teamwork and importance of being punctual.
In my opinion, I have gained lots of knowledge and experience that is needed to be successful
in life and the courage to face many engineering challenges.
