Bachelor of science in Marine Engineer

TITLE OF THE ACTIVITY:

One-Day Ship and Port Familiarization

PREPARED BY:
Panlilio, Simone Gabriel E.

SUBMITTED TO:

DATE OF THE ACTIVITY:

November 07, 2024
A. OVERVIEW

The activity that we conducted is One-Day Ship and Port Familiarization,

this activity offers us a comprehensive overview about maritime operation,
that focusing on shipboard and engine room activities. It gives us learning and
experience about the topic such as safety protocol, main engine, and
generator. They also tour us in ship facilities to understand the procedures,
efficiency of the operation, and how ship and port work together. They familiar
us inside the ship especially inside the engine room. The instructor taught us
about safety on how to use the machine and the operation of it, and also
about the machine, how the ship works, and what's inside the ship, especially
in electrical, etc.

The ship familiarization activity was conducted on M/V October

Lavender at South Harbour with a duration time of around 1200H to 1500H in
one day. The activity was organized to provide us maritime students with
insight into the operational processes and practices.

There is a big connection between a one-day ship and port

familiarization activity and us Marine students, as it gives us knowledge and
practical application. It provides us with firsthand exposure to shipboard
systems, machinery, and safety protocols, helping us understand the real-
world operation. Additionally, it introduces us to port operations and maritime
safety management, which are essential aspects of our future roles. This
experience not only clarifies career expectations but also motivates learning,
develops communication skills, and prepares us for internships or cadetships.
Overall, it serves as a foundational step in shaping competent and well-
rounded maritime professionals.
B. ASSESSMENT

1. How will you describe the ship’s engine workshop?

The ship's engine workshop is typically a well-organized, functional space dedicated
to the maintenance, repair, and testing of the vessel's propulsion and power systems.
It is often located in a lower deck or near the engine room, where the primary
machinery is housed. The workshop is equipped with specialized tools, machinery,
and diagnostic equipment to handle various tasks, such as engine overhauls,
troubleshooting, calibration, and routine maintenance.

2. Have you seen a posted designation of cleaning assignment of the

ship's engine personnel? If yes, where? If no, have you checked the
chief engineer's standing order? What is the importance of good
housekeeping in ship’s workshop?
No. I haven't seen a specific posted designation of cleaning assignments for ship's engine
personnel, as that would typically be found in the ship's internal documents, such as the
Chief Engineer's Standing Orders or the maintenance manual. However, I can provide some
general insights.

Importance of Housekeeping in the Ship's Workshop:

 Safety: A clean and organized workshop minimizes the risk of accidents.

 Efficiency: Proper housekeeping ensures tools, equipment, and materials are
easily accessible.
 Preventing Equipment Damage: Regular cleaning prevents the accumulation
of dust, grime, and corrosive substances that can damage sensitive machinery
or components.
 Compliance: Many maritime regulations require proper housekeeping in work
areas, including engine rooms and workshops.

3. Does the ship's engine personnel wear proper PPE? What are the
different PPEs they wore? Enumerate and explain the uses of those
They were not wearing PPE, during the activity I did not see them wearing PPE. All
they wear is a green t-shirt then block pants and running shoes.

4. What is a risk assessment? How will you differentiate accident and

incidents?
Get a copy of the following:
a. Hot work permit
b. Work in electricity
c. Risk assesment
d. Near miss report
C. DOCUMENTATION
