Here are the Seven important rules (Methods) used
for the calculation of areas in Surveying:

• Solution:
0+2.5+3.5+5+4.6+3.2+0
Area = ( )× 60 = 161.14𝑚2

Example: The following offsets were taken from a chain line to an
irregular boundary line at an interval of 10 m: 0, 2.50, 3.50, 5.00, 4.60,
3.20, 0 m
Compute the area between the chain line, the irregular boundary line
and the end of offsets by the trapezoidal rule
14
By Trapezoidal rule
10
Required area = {(0+0)+2(2.50+3.50+5.00+4.60+3.20)}

=188 m2

Example: The following offsets are taken from a survey line to a curves
boundary line:
Chainage (m) 0 5 10 15 20 30 40 60 80
Offsets (m) 2.5 3.8 4.6 5.2 6.1 4.7 5.8 3.9 2.2
Find the area enclosed by survey line, boundary line and the first and
the last offsets by
a) The trapezoidal rule
b) Simpson’s rule

Graphical Method
Solution:
Area of 1 box (a) = 1 × 1 = 1 𝑐𝑚2
Approximate numbers of boxes (n) ≈ 42.5
Map scale = 1 : 1000
Approximate plot area = 1 × 42.5 × 10002 = 4.25 × 107 𝑐𝑚2 = 4250𝑚2

Home Work-5:
Find the area of a hexagonal plot ABCDEF whose actual
coordinates (in meters) are A(0,0), B(100,0), C(150,100),
D(50,150), E(0, 100) and F(-50,-50). Find the area of the plot.
