CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Commercial egg production has become one of the most viable and essential agricultural

sector in the Philippines. Given their low cost, high nutritional content, and variety, eggs

continue to remain an essential component in Filipino diets, and demand for eggs is continually

increasing. A common product consumed all over the world, eggs are a great source of vital

nutrients. . They are an excellent source of minerals, vitamins, and protein. Due to factors

including population growth, rising incomes, and growing awareness of the nutritional value of

eggs, demand for eggs is only expected to increase (Amy Richter, 2024).

Egg Production is broad in terms of business in the Philippines. Most of us Filipinos are

engaged in poultry production as a source of income and for business. Poultry farming is one of

the most straightforward businesses or enterprises, an agricultural existing product that most of

us consume and develop over the several years. Egg poultry production has more opportunities

and income to the local communities aside from satisfying our needs. The quantity of egg

products is determined primarily by the needs of the population since we all know that it is

included in the consumer baskets (Fisinin, 2019).

The study entitled “A Feasibility Study on Poultry Egg Production” was introduced

by our proponent. Rozee’s Freshie Eggs is the proposed business which is to produce quality

and accessible fresh eggs to the consumer. The proponent wants to establish this type of

business because she wanted to provide the consumer needs in her neighborhood and to

supply eggs to the retailers. Despite of having a lot of existing egg poultry farm in Negros

Oriental, there may be a gap between local egg production and consumption in Doldol
Bacong. This means that additional local supply is needed to meet growing demand. The

proponent came up with an idea to share her knowledge and skills to have a small business

that may help and provide the constant egg accessibility. The proposed project is located at

barangay Doldol, Bacong where the poultry house or farm is situated and away from

civilization. The study focuses on how the business can able to stand out and meet the

consumer's trust by showing commitment to quality, animal welfare, and sustainability. This

feasibility study aims to evaluate the potential success of a new egg production that will be

entering the market.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study entitled “A Feasibility Study on Small Poultry Egg Production” aims

to explore the possibility of establishing Poultry Egg Production in the Barangay of Doldol,

Bacong.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

Present sufficient information and analyses regarding the market, technical,

financial, management and organization and socio-economic implications.

In order to determine the feasibility of the proposed project, the following

questions must be answered:

1. Will the project be feasible from the marketing point of view?

2. Will the project be feasible from the technical point of view?

3. Will the project be feasible from the financial point of view?

4. Will the project be feasible from the management point of view?

5. Will the project be feasible from the socio-economic point of view?

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The aspect of this study will be focused on assessing the viability of egg production in

Brgy. Doldol, Bacong, Negros Oriental. It will serve the increasing demand of eggs in Brgy.

Doldol, Bacong and probably the neighboring barangays in the near future. This proposed

business will be engaged in raising white leghorns and selling its good quality eggs. To ascertain

the viability of the proposed project, the researchers will consider the five main components of a

feasibility study– marketing, management, technical, socio-economic, and financial aspects. The

analysis is confined only in Brgy. Doldol in Bacong, Negros Oriental. The respondents'

response will reflect all the data and information obtained in the study. The

result of this study, therefore, should not be construed as also true beyond

the boundary of the said location.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will benefit the following entities:

The proponent- She would be able to equip her knowledge and skills necessary to successfully

launch and manage her own business. She would be able to supplement income through the

proposed project’s return investment.

The consumer- The new established poultry egg production would give easy access to them.
The researchers- This study will motivate researchers to launch their own business in the future

because of their experience and knowledge they obtain.

The academe- The study will help us understand how small businesses can be successful in the

community. It gives opportunities for students or faculty to gain a hands-on experience in poultry

production and local economic development.

The community- The study will provide accessible and affordable eggs for everyone. It can

create jobs for local people, and help the economy to grow.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Environment

The feasibility study will be conducted at Bacong, Negros Oriental which is one of the

agricultural areas in Negros Oriental. The Municipality of Bacong is the 4th class municipality in

the province of Negros Oriental and it is 8 kilometers away from Dumaguete City. Bacong is a

small coastal town neighboring Dumaguete City on its south. Fishing and farming are one of the

primary sources of income in this municipality. One of the barangay in Bacong is Doldol,

Bacong where the proposed project will be situated. Farming is one of the primary sources of

income in Doldol. It is known for cattle and swine farming.

Research Respondent

The respondents of this study are direct consumers since it is a small business. In order to

identify this group of people, the researchers used purposive sampling. Due to a large number of

total households to become possible customers, the researchers use Slovin’s formula to come up

with a total of 150 households as our respondents.

Research Instrument

The instrument used to gather data and information is through survey questionnaires

made by the researchers. Survey method is defined as the collection of information from a

sample of individuals through their responses to questions with the use of printed questionnaires

to be distributed to the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers used survey questionnaires and conduct survey in order to obtain relevant

information and gather necessary data about the preferences of the respondents when it comes to

the product offered by the proposed business. The above mentioned-research instrument where

used in the process of collecting the data required for the study. The survey questionnaire where

distributed to their respondents to determine the viability of the new established egg production

in their place.
Statistical Treatment of Data

Statistical software was utilized to assist in the application of relevant statistical

approaches for data analysis. Particularly, the Frequency and Percentage distribution was used

for numeral analysis of the respondents’ profiles as well as their perceptions on availing poultry

egg production.

Slovin’s formula is used to calculate the minimum sample sized needed to estimate a

statistic based on an acceptable margin of error.

Slovin’s formula is calculated as:

n = N / (1 + Ne2)

where:

 n: Sample size needed

 N: Population size

 e: Acceptable margin of error

MARKETING ASPECT

Project Description

Poultry production project refers to the production of eggs from broilers and layers

respectively. Poultry egg is important source of high quality proteins, minerals and vitamins to

balance the human diet. Rozee's Freshie Eggs presents a strong business opportunity in Doldol

Bacong market, addressing the growing need for convenient access to good quality egg products.

The enterprise aims to establish a small-scale, efficient, and sustainable egg production business

providing good quality eggs to consumers. The poultry farm will execute the entire egg

production process which includes the collection and sorting of eggs guaranteeing the exclusive

supply of freshly laid eggs to consumers. To ensure the well-being of the hens and to ensure the

good production of eggs, we will provide them a good environment that includes health care

management and provide a stress free environment.

Target Market Description

Rozee’s Freshie Eggs Business primarily targets to supply the direct consumers with

preference for fresh, affordable and good quality eggs in Doldol, Bacong where there are 234

households. With few egg suppliers, the demand of eggs in Doldol is steadily increasing.

Demand

Eggs are one of the most important agricultural commodities in the Philippines. It is

considered as a necessity good in Filipino households and a primary ingredient in particular

meals that are usually enjoyed by people of all ages. Eggs provide nutritional benefits and its

nature is being a cheaper alternative for protein. In Doldol, Bacong, Negros Oriental, the demand

for eggs is continuously increasing due to few existing producers. The result shows that 100% or

150 out of 150 respondents are willing to purchase eggs if there is a new egg store that will be

established in Doldol, Bacong. This revealed that the people are willing to patronize a new egg

store despite the existing competitors. The markets interest in egg products never seems to

decline. Many people choose eggs to fulfill their family’s need for animal protein. This condition

proves that demand for eggs is constantly increasing.

Supply

People’s need for animal products such as eggs continues to increase. This is on line with

the increase in population, level of education, and public attention to the role of nutrition and

food, especially protein, in daily life. Despite having existing egg stores in Doldol, Bacong, a

new egg store business is not just to broaden the consumers’ choice, but mainly to help supply

the market’s needs for eggs. It will help supply eggs that are readily available in various
quantities and qualities. This new business will make eggs easily accessible to consumers by

offering a reliable point of purchase. This is especially important for households that depend on

eggs for affordable protein.

Demand and Supply Analysis

Demand and supply analysis helps businesses identify shifts in consumer preferences. By

understanding this analysis, egg producers can adjust their offerings to meet changing consumer

desires, staying competitive in the market. Doldol, Bacong has a growing population, which

directly impacts the demand for eggs. This population growth or increase in the number of

households leads to higher demand for eggs which is the reason why a new egg store needs to be

established in the area. This is to help ensure a consistent supply of eggs, especially if local

production isn’t enough to meet demand. This also ensures that eggs reach the market in

sufficient quantities and at the right time. According to the survey conducted by the researchers,

establishing a new egg store has a high chance of being successful since according to the result,

150 out of 150 or 100% of the respondents responded “Yes” to the question “If a new egg store

will be established in Doldol, Bacong, will you avail/purchase?”

Product Strategy
Our product strategy for the egg poultry business focuses on delivering good quality,

ethically produced eggs that cater to diverse consumer preferences. We will segment our product

offerings targeting specific market segments like health-conscious consumers, families, and

premium product seekers. By emphasizing animal welfare, sustainability, and freshness, we will

position our brand as a trusted source for nutritious, ethically produced eggs. Additionally, we

will focus on innovation in packaging, adopting eco-friendly materials, and enhancing the

consumer experience.

Place Strategy

The proponent decided that the proposed business will be located at barangay Doldol,

Bacong, Negros Oriental. The farm is approximately 700 square meters, and the stall will be

situated at Purok 1 Doldol also known as Dolway where the market is there.

Pricing Strategy

The product’s price will be determined depending on the production cost and the number

of products produced. The product price would be reasonable enough to provide equal benefits to

both consumer and the business. Things that should be considered in coming up with certain

prices are product costs, such as direct materials and utilities. The total production cost will be

divided into how many has been produced to come up with the unit cost then add a mark-up.

Promotion Strategy
The promotion provides customers to have knowledge about the business existence.

Furthermore, the public will also be aware of the business as well as the product it offers, which

will help the customers patronize the business. The information will be disseminated through

word-of-mouth, social media platforms, poster, flyers and tarpaulin.

a. Mouth-of-word

Spreading positive messages about the business through personal recommendations,

online reviews and social sharing. This is the least expensive strategy of advertising the

business and a powerful way to promote the product.

b. Social media platform

Almost everyone is now familiar and have the access to the social media platforms such

as Facebook, Google site, Instagram and others. These will help the customers be updated

with any news locally and internationally. The business can also make its own website to

give the customers all the information they need about the business.

c. Posters, flyers and tarpaulin

This is one medium used in promoting a business. The posters, flyers and tarpaulin

should contain all important information about the business such as the name of the

business, the location where it is established, and the product and services being offered.

It should be simple, concise and easy to read.
