Introduction To Radiation Therapy

Introduction to radiation therapy

 Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to treat cancer.
 Ionizing radiation destroys DNA, which leads to cell death.

Principles of radiation therapy

• Radiation destroys DNA, which makes it effective against cancer.
• The cell cycle consists of several phases, including "forward" and "at rest."
• Radiosensitive tumors are more vulnerable to radiation and are destroyed
faster.

Cancer Treatment
• Radiation therapy can be used in the early stages of cancer for people who
are sensitive to radiation.
• Treatment may include surgical radiation, preoperative and postoperative
therapy.
• Radiation therapy helps to reduce the size of the tumor for safe surgery.

The goals of radiation therapy

• Radiation therapy can treat the symptoms of advanced metastatic tumors.
• Preventive radiation therapy prevents cancer recurrence and improves
quality of life.
• Adjuvant therapy is used to reduce the risk of recurrence and improve
treatment outcomes.
Introduction To Radiation Therapy

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy

• Radiation therapy is not chemotherapy, but chemotherapy can enhance the
effects of radiation.
• Chemotherapy is used to reduce the sensitizing effect and enhance the
effects of radiation.
• Radiation therapy is performed under the supervision of a radiation
oncologist who monitors the equipment and radiation doses.

Equipment and methods

• The linear accelerator uses particles for radiation therapy.
• Protons and electrons can be used to irradiate tissues.
• The level of X-ray radiation and the number of particles affect the
effectiveness of treatment.
