    Comment
    Bilirubin is a breakdown product of normal heme catabolism. Elevated levels are results of hemolysis and
    effective erythropoiesis. Conjugated (direct) bilirubin is elevated like biliary duct obstruction ,hepatocellular
    damage and few hereditary disorders. AST levels increase in viral hepatitis, blockage of the bile duct cirrhosis
    of the liver,liver cancer,kidney failure,hemolytic anemia,pancreatitis,hemochromatosis heart attack or sterneous
    activity. ALT is a liver specific enzyme which increase due to hepatocellular injury. Elevated ALP levels are seen
    in biliary obstruction osteoblastic bone tumours , osteomalacia,hepatitis ,hypeparathyroidism
    ,leukemia,lymphoma,paget's disease, rickets,sarcoidiosis etc.SGOT / SGPT ratio greater than 2 is highly
    suggestive of alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
