Finite Element Modeling
Introduction
Finite element models with various levels of complexity have been created to investigate
the overall behavior and response of the structure under applied loads.

Finite Element Model

Three-dimensional finite element models of the building with appropriate finite elements
are created in ETABS. Linear models considering elastic behavior are used for wind and seismic
analysis. The models are comprised of frame and shell elements to represent structural
components. Different effective component stiffness values are considered separately for wind and
earthquake loadings. Gross section stiffness values are used for wind analysis while cracked
section stiffness values are used for seismic analysis. (ACI 318-05 -10.11)
The factored member forces shall be computed using an elastic first-order frame analysis with the
section properties determined considering the influence of cracked regions along the length of the
member. Alternatively, it is permitted to use the following properties for the members in the
structure.
 Modulus of Elasticity: Ec = 57,000 √f'c

Chapter 6 Analysis Results

Overview
This chapter presents the results obtained from Modal analysis, limit checking, wind
analysis, response spectrum analysis. Response spectrum analysis results are also presented in
order to compare the design base shear.

Model Analysis
Modal analysis is performed to determine the vibration modes of the building as well as to
understand the structural behavior of the building. Combination of mass from 100% of dead load
and superimposed dead load plus 25% of live load is considered in modal analysis.
Elastic base shear is found out that about 80% of the shear forces are resisted by the shear walls
while 20% of the total shear forces are resisted by the frames.
Spectral parameters were adjusted such that the corresponding design base shear is not less than
90 percent of the base shear determined by Static Force Procedure. (UBC97- 1631.5.4)

Scale Factor
Scale factor for response spectrum load case was calculated from dividing the static base
shear resultant by corresponding response spectrum base shear resultant.
Both scale response spectrum with or without consideration of eccentricity (5% initially if there is no
plan irregularity) shall be created.

STABILITY CHECK

Story Drift and Displacement

The maximum story displacements and story drifts under wind, earthquake are plotted in
the following figures. It is found that the story drifts are within the acceptable ranges, 2.5% for wind
and 2% for earthquake. Furthermore, story displacements under wind and earthquakes are within
acceptable limits of H/450 (H = height of the building).
