Design of Rigid Pavement (as per IRC: SP: 62-2014)

Design Parameters are as follows

1. Compressive strength of concrete

2. Flexural strength of concrete
3. Design period
4. Tire pressure
5. Wheel load
6. Spacing of contraction joints

Details Data Remarks

Modulus of subgrade reaction, k (MPa/m)
Elastic modulus of concrete, E, MPa
Soaked CBR
Poisson ratio of concrete
Characteristic compressive cube strength (for 28days
of curing), MPa
Flexural strength of concrete (after 90 days), fi, MPa
Tire (1-single / 2-dual)
Single wheel load P, N
Load on one wheel of dual wheel set, Pd, N
Tire pressure, p, MPa
Length of contact area, L, m
Spacing between the centers of dual wheel, Sd, mm
Radius of contact, a, mm
Radius of relative stiffness, l, mm
Trial thickness, h, mm XXXX
Design traffic, CVPD
Design life of pavement, years
Edge load stress developed, σ e
Coefficient of thermal expansion, α, (10 ×10−6)
Temperature difference between top and bottom
slab, t °C
Coefficient depending upon the ratio of length and
radius of relative stiffness, C
Temperature stress at edge, σ te σ te=E × α ×t × C /2
Total stress=load stress+ temperature stress
Permissible flexural strength of M30 grade concrete,
MPa
Hence the design is safe/unsafe
Total stress developed (2.95 MPa) < Permissible flexural strength of M30 grade concrete (3.83 MPa).
Hence the design is safe/unsafe
Hence thickness of 150 mm assumed is safe.

Pavement Structural Design Catalogues

The pavement structural catalogues presented in these guidelines for design traffic levels up to 50
MSA are intended for initial cost estimation and for guidance only. For all roads with more than 2
MSA design traffic, the design shall be carried out using site specific inputs to satisfy the mechanistic-
empirical performance models using IITPAVE software.

The designed pavement thickness and composition was calculated by referring pavement design
catalogue of IRC 37-2018.
