SECTION D
Case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice and
carries 4 (1+1+2) marks each.
29 (i) All natural and artificial radioactive decay of unstable nuclei takes 1
. place by first order kinetics.
Hydrogenation of ethene and decomposition of N2O5 and N2O are also the
example of first 1
order reactions.
(ii) If we plot a graph between log[R0] / R0] vs t we get a straight line 1
with the slope = K/2.303

(iii) a. for first order reaction, t1/2 = 0.693 𝑘 And unit of k is s

(b) rate constant (k) = 0.0693/ 60 min = 1.925 x 10 -4 s -1 1

OR 1
[R0]=100, [R]=100 – 30 – 70, t = 40min k= 2.303/t log [R0]/[R] =
2.303/40 log 100/70 = 2.303/40 * 0.1548 :. k = 8.91 * 10-3 min -1

SECTION E
Long answer type and carry 5 marks each. Two questions have an
internal choice.
31 i) Solute-solvent dipolar interactions exist in the pair of methanol and
. acetone. 1
ii) * To increase the solubility of CO2 in soft drinks and soda water, the
bottle is sealed under high pressure.
* To avoid a dangerous medical condition called bends, scuba divers use 1
oxygen diluted with less soluble helium gas.
iii) In positive deviations, the partial vapour pressure of each component A
and B of a solution and the total pressure of the solution is higher than the 1
vapour pressure calculated from Raoult’s law. For example, Water and
Ethanol.
iv) Gas (B) will have higher value of KH (Henry’s constant) than Gas (A) 1
at the same temperature
v) The phenomenon involved in the melting of snow on snow-covered
roads is the depression in the freezing point which is caused by the 1
addition of non volatile impurities to a liquid. The addition of salt (sodium
chloride) lowers the freezing point temperature of the water and thus,
helps in the melting of snow.
vi) When a non-volatile solute is added to a solvent, the surface area for
escape of solvent molecules decreases and vapour pressure gets lowered.
vii) Water from NaCl solution passes into cells &they swell. Finally they
will burst
32 i) iodoform test 1

OR 1
a. Cr is reducing as its configuration changes from d4 to d3 , the latter

having a half-filled t2g level. On the other hand, the change from Mn3+ to
Mn2+ results in the half-filled (d5 ) configuration which has extra stability.
b. Divalent ion  3d5 So μ = [n(n+2)]½ = [5(5+2)]½ = 5.9 BM
c. MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O
