The purpose of the research is to go beyond documenting general alcohol use patterns and
look into the complex interplay of social, economic, and environmental factors that influence
alcohol misuse in this particular demographic. The study shall, therefore, develop an
understanding of how community-specific factors contribute to alcohol use behaviors and their
eventual health outcomes. This study could extend theories already in place by inserting an
intersectional framework centered around the unique experiences of young Black adults
growing up in urban locales. Such a perspective thus helped to pinpoint intervention efforts
that consider the specific effects of the challenges and resources in a given community, such
as in Baltimore. The findings have considerable implications for developing and providing
better and more sensitive preventive and therapeutic programs.
Part IV: Define any terms that may have special meaning to the study itself:
The operational definitions for this study set distinctive boundaries for analyzing alcohol
misuse among young Black adults in Baltimore's urban environment. Alcohol misuse involves
the use of alcohol in a way that causes considerable negative impact on daily, interpersonal,
or occupational functioning and the high risk of adverse consequences during
developmentally vulnerable time points (Lees et al., 2020). The period denoted as "young
adulthood" is a special period of human development that includes people between the ages
of 17 and 30, who are considered to be at the precise crossroads from adolescence to other
mature stages in human life. Binge drinking behavior more particularly concerns the pattern
that involves consuming five or more drinks for males and four or more drinks for females
within two hours (D'Alessandro et al., 2023). In embracing this study, the concept of
intersectionality, or the way race interplays with class and environment regarding alcohol use
and health outcomes, is adopted as the framework for this study.
