Instructions:
Please complete all six parts of the memo in the fields below.

Part I: Identify and describe the following:

The aim is to make alcohol consumption among adolescents a critical public health challenge
that needs immediate attention and research focus. Such a topic has been chosen because
the available evidence highlights that adolescent alcohol use coincides with a critical
neurocognitive maturation phase and results in significant disruptions. This study will
particularly look into the effects of alcohol misuse among Black young adults aged 17-30
years in Baltimore, Maryland, a demographic facing many unique challenges and risk factors.
The study will look at neurobiological outcomes due to alcohol use during this developmental
window and also social determinants affecting this particular population. This study will be
justified based on the current gaps in understanding how racial identity, socioeconomic
factors, and urban environment intersect with alcohol use patterns in this community.

The purpose of the research is to go beyond documenting general alcohol use patterns and
look into the complex interplay of social, economic, and environmental factors that influence
alcohol misuse in this particular demographic. The study shall, therefore, develop an
understanding of how community-specific factors contribute to alcohol use behaviors and their
eventual health outcomes. This study could extend theories already in place by inserting an
intersectional framework centered around the unique experiences of young Black adults
growing up in urban locales. Such a perspective thus helped to pinpoint intervention efforts
that consider the specific effects of the challenges and resources in a given community, such
as in Baltimore. The findings have considerable implications for developing and providing
better and more sensitive preventive and therapeutic programs.

Part II: State the topic as a study question:

What impact does alcohol misuse have on Baltimore, Maryland's Black young adults between
the ages of 17 and 30?
Part III: Explain the new angle on the topic that your health-related research question
will:
This cutting-edge research examines the tangled relationships between alcohol misuse and
social determinants with Black young adults in Baltimore's urban environment. It brings a
holistic analysis of socioeconomic factors, community resources, and cultural contexts that
influence drinking patterns within this population. Our research discusses how entangled
issues of racial identity, environmental conditions, and access to healthcare are setting up
alcohol use outcomes in Baltimore. The research results will be useful in building intervention
strategies for Baltimore's young black adults depending on the needs of their various
communities. In the end, such will contribute to the development of one great path-finding
study that incorporates culturally appropriate treatment interventions for various requirements
identified in broad cross-sectional community-based participatory assessments.

Part IV: Define any terms that may have special meaning to the study itself:
The operational definitions for this study set distinctive boundaries for analyzing alcohol
misuse among young Black adults in Baltimore's urban environment. Alcohol misuse involves
the use of alcohol in a way that causes considerable negative impact on daily, interpersonal,
or occupational functioning and the high risk of adverse consequences during
developmentally vulnerable time points (Lees et al., 2020). The period denoted as "young
adulthood" is a special period of human development that includes people between the ages
of 17 and 30, who are considered to be at the precise crossroads from adolescence to other
mature stages in human life. Binge drinking behavior more particularly concerns the pattern
that involves consuming five or more drinks for males and four or more drinks for females
within two hours (D'Alessandro et al., 2023). In embracing this study, the concept of
intersectionality, or the way race interplays with class and environment regarding alcohol use
and health outcomes, is adopted as the framework for this study.

Part V: Reformulate the study question into a cogent problem statement:

This research examines how alcohol misuse impacts the health, well-being, and social
functioning of Black young adults, ages 17-30, within Baltimore, Maryland's diverse urban
communities.
