ABOUT SWEDEN

Sweden is a Scandinavian country that consists of coastal islands, lakes,

boreal forests and glaciated mountains. Its capital city is Stockholm, and
it is both a democracy and monarchy. Sweden is also home to the 7th
best globally ranked hospital.
HEALTHCARE IN SWEDEN
Healthcare in Sweden is universal. This means that all people have access to
healthcare, regardless of their social or economical status. It covers all essential
heath services including prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care.
The healthcare system in Sweden is similar to that of Canada’s in the sense that
it is largely funded by taxes, mainly coming from municipal and regional levels.
Grants are also provided by the government.

DOES EVERYONE HAVE EQUAL ACCESS?
In Sweden, the Health and Medical Services Act states that the health system
must cover all legal residents. Emergency coverage is also provided to all
patients from the European Union, and other countries that Sweden has
agreements with. Children who are permanent residents and/or asylum-seeking
children have the right to health care in Sweden. Asylum-seeking adults also have
the right to receive care.
DOES EVERYONE HAVE EQUAL ACCESS?
There are three principals that apply to all types of healthcare in Sweden. These
are:
1. Human dignity: All human beings have an equal entitlement to dignity and have the
same rights regardless of their status in the community.
2. Need and solidarity: Those in greatest need take precedence in being treated.
3. Cost-effectiveness: When a choice has to be made, there should be a reasonable
balance between costs and benefits, with costs measured in relation to improvement
in health and quality of life.

WHAT DOES THE WORLD THINK?

Sweden is currently ranked as having the 8th best healthcare system globally.
When compared to a country like the United States, it is generally understood
that Sweden’s healthcare is better in quality, and cost. While citizens have the
option to buy health insurance, it is not necessary in order to receive treatment.
