1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design, manufacture
and testing of instrument cables, cable glands and other cable installation materials
for the Faregh Field Development Project.

2.0 DESIGN STANDARDS AND CODES


2.1 Revisions
The latest issues, as on the date of order, of the relevant codes, statutory regulations
and specifications reference herein shall apply to the design, construction, testing etc
of all the materials.
2.2 Codes and Standards
The Vendor shall ensure that the design and construction of the equipment complies
with all national codes and standards applicable to the equipment he proposes as
well as any specifically stated within the body of the specification, in particular
the following :-
ANSI-MC96.1 Temperature measurement thermocouples
ASTM D2863 Test method for measuring oxygen concentration.
CSA C22.2 #174 Control and instrumentation cable standard.
CSA Canadian Electrical Code
BS 3643 ISO metric screw threads.
BS 6121 Mechanical cable glands (for elastomeric and plastic
insulated cables)
IEC 331 Fire resisting characteristics of electric cables.
IEC 332 Tests on electric cables under fire conditions.
IEC 540 Test methods for insulations and sheaths of electric cables
and cords (elastomeric, thermoplastic compounds).
IEC 754 Test on gases evolved during combustion of electric cables.
Applicable publications by:
NEMA National Electrical Manufacturer's Association.
NFPA National Fire Protection Association.
2.3 Conflict of Information
Any conflict between this Specification and its attachments or any other
specification or with any of the applicable codes and regulations shall be brought to
the Engineer's attention, by the Vendor, for resolution. Work shall proceed only after
receipt, by the Vendor, of written clarification from the Engineer.

3.0 SERVICE CONDITIONS


3.1 The instrument cable shall be suitable for use in the conditions as follows :
(i) Maximum Operating Temperature (194° F):
(ii) Humidity:
Average: 30% to 60% @ 104oF
Maximum: 100% (heavy dew)
(iii) Other Conditions:
Intensive solar radiation
Very abrasive sandstorms
Occasional heavy rainstorms
(iv) Isoceraunic Levels (Identified index value per NFPA standards)
Inland Areas: #9 (0 - 5 thunderstorm days per annum)
(v) Maximum winds: 95 miles per hour (incl. 1.2 gust factor)
(vi) Air borne corrosive agents: Limestone dust (Caliche lime stone) in
conjunction with condensation causes severe corrosive conditions).

3.2 The cables shall be capable of operating continuously and without adverse or
injurious overheating under all specified conditions of operation.
3.3 The cables shall be designed as far as practicable to withstand the effects of fire,
explosion and strong vibration.

4.0 CABLE CONSTRUCTION


4.1 General
4.1.1 All cables shall be identified by an alpha-numeric code system. Each
code identifies the cable size, whether screened, sheath colours etc.
4.1.2 As part of the order Vendor shall provide cross-sectional drawings of
each cable type showing the materials of construction of the cable and
confirm that these satisfy the performance requirements and the tests
detailed in this specification.
4.1.3 Vendor shall ensure that all aspects necessary for the satisfactory
performance of the cables are included in the design, even though such
aspects may not have been specifically detailed in the specification.
4.1.4 Cables shall be new and of good quality.
4.1.5 The cables shall be designed and manufactured for a minimum life of 20
years.
4.2 Technical Requirements
4.2.1 Except for thermocouple cables, conductors for all cables shall be tinned
annealed stranded copper.
For the thermocouple cables, the conductors shall be stranded and in the
material specified.
The conductor sizes shall be as specified in the attached tables.
4.2.2 The flame retardant cables shall meet the requirements of IEC-332 Part 3.
The fire resistant cables shall meet the requirements of IEC-331. The
fire resistant cables are required for the signals associated with
Emergency Shutdown System. Attached documentation identifies the
requirements for each type.
4.2.3 The core insulation shall be low smoke, low/zero halogen cross linked
polyethylene or silicone rubber, mica glass taped for fire
resistant cables.
4.2.4 Where paired or triple cables are specified, each pair or triple shall be
uniformly twisted together to form a pair, or triple, melinex taped.
4.2.5 The interstices between each core or pair, and any central voids shall be
filled with non hygroscopic, low smoke low halogen fillers to form a
circular and effectively filled cross section.
4.2.6 The bedding material shall be low smoke, low/zero halogen, of a
compound suitable for the duty specified and compatible with other
materials used in the cable construction. Bedding material shall be
applied by an extrusion process.
4.2.7 The oxygen index of outer sheaths and bedding of all cables shall be
greater than 30 when tested in accordance with ASTM 2863.
4.2.8 All sheath, bedding, and insulation materials shall be of the reduced
toxicity type with the following maximum levels of Hydrogen Chloride
(HCl) release:
a) Maximum HCl release shall not exceed 8% by weight for black
sheaths and 9% by weight for other colour sheaths during
combustion at 1832o F.
b) The HCl emission tests shall be conducted in accordance with
procedures laid down in IEC DOC 169.

4.2.9 Particular consideration shall be given to prevent the armour becoming
embedded in the inner sheath making separation for termination difficult.
If necessary, a proofed tape shall be provided between the inner sheath
and the armour.
4.2.10 Where necessary for cable manufacturing purposes, melinex tape may be
applied over cable armour and under sheath.
4.2.11 All cables shall be 300/300 volt grade.
4.2.12 The outer sheath material shall be low smoke, zero halogen and suitable
for the service conditions. Some cables are designated for direct burial.
Vendor shall propose a suitable inner and outer sheath material for these
cables. Armour shall be stainless steel. The water table is at least 30 feet
below the ground level.
4.2.13 The cables shall be capable of operating when exposed to a water spray
during fire. This shall be demonstrated during testing.
4.2.14 The colours of the outer sheath shall be as follows :-
a) Flame Retardant cables on non-Intrinsically Safe (NIS)
24 VDC service : Orange.
b) Fire resistant cables on NIS 24 VDC service : Orange with
yellow tracer line along the length of the cable.
c) Flame-retardant cables on Intrinsically Safe (IS) 24 VDC
service: Blue.
d) Fire resistant cables on IS 24 VDC service : Blue with yellow
tracer line along the length of the cable.
e) Fire resistant, 120 VAC service - Black with Yellow Tracer.
4.2.15 Cable armour, shall be galvanised braid and galvanised steel wire (for
buried cables) complying with the appropriate codes and standards in
para 2.2.
4.2.16 The screen, where specified, shall be aluminium/mylar screening tape
with metallic side down in direct contact with an 18 AWG (minimum)
stranded tinned conductor (drain wire) laid parallel under the screening
tape. The screening tape shall be wound with sufficient overlap to ensure
complete coverage of bends.
4.2.17 The identification of the cable cores shall be as follows:-
a) Paired cables shall have the core insulation coloured black and
white. Each pair shall be numerically identified by the pair number
printed directly on each core in a contrasting colour.
b) Triple cables shall have the core insulation coloured black, white
and red. Each triple shall be numerically identified by the triple
number printed directly on each core in a contrasting colour.
c) Cored cables shall have the core insulation (all cores) coloured
black. Each core shall be numerically identified by the core number
printed directly on each core in a contrasting colour.
Note: for each type of cable, the core numbers shall be printed at a
maximum spacing of 12 inches.
4.2.18 The following information shall be embossed every 3 feet along the
entire cable length on the external surface of the oversheath.
a) Manufacturer
b) Number of cores/pairs and size of conductors
c) Voltage rating
d) Vendor's part number
e) Applicable standard(s) association to which the cable is fabricated
f) Sunlight resistant.

g) Hazardous classification (if applicable)
4.2.19 Vendor shall advise the minimum bending radius for each type of cable
offered and shall specify maximum and minimum ambient temperatures
under which the cables can be installed to this radius. The Vendor shall
advise whether any tests have been undertaken to prove the bending
performance.
4.2.20 Cables shall be suitable for use with standard size cable glands having
compression seals on the outer sheath and on the bedding material.
4.2.21 Grounding Cables
The grounding cables shall be 1000V grade, with tinned stranded copper
conductors. The conductor sizes are stated on the attached tables. The
conductor insulation shall be low smoke low halogen cross linked
polyethylene or silicone rubber coloured black. The over sheath colour
shall be green with yellow stripe and made from low smoke zero
halogen material with flame retardant properties to IEC-332 part 3.
The general requirements of other types of cables (marking, testing etc)
apply to the grounding cable.

4.3 Cable Drums


4.3.1 The maximum diameter of the cable drums shall not exceed 7 feet
without written approval from the Engineer.
4.3.2 Cable drums shall have the following information clearly stencilled on
the outside of both flanges in letters not less than 3 inches high.
a) Manufacturer.
b) Project title.
c) Purchase order number and cable code number.
d) Type of cable.
e) Voltage grade.
f) Number of cores.
g) Size of conductors.
h) Vendor's part number.
i) Length of cable in yards.
j) Drum number
4.3.3 Each cable drum shall contain a single length of cable. No joints or
splices shall be permitted in any cable conductors or screen drain wire.
The drum cable length requirements for each shall be agreed with the
engineer prior to commence of manufacturing of the cables.
4.3.4 The cables shall be protected against damage during transit and for up to
12 month's storage. The cable ends shall be sealed and fixed to the
drum. Cable drums shall be fitted with battens, fixed around the entire
periphery of the drum.

5.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING


5.1 General
5.1.1 At least eight weeks prior to commencement of any testing, the Vendor
shall submit to the Engineer, for review, his inspection and testing
procedures. All inspection and testing shall be carried out in accordance
with the relevant codes, standards and the Project documentation. A copy
of the procedures shall be supplied as part of the order.
5.1.2 The Engineer, or his nominated representatives, shall be given free
access to the Vendor's premises for the purpose of inspection and testing
at any stage of the contract. The representatives shall have the right to

reject any work that does not comply with the project requirements.
5.1.3 Facilities (test equipment and relevant documentation) shall be provided
by the Vendor for the representatives to make full dimensional checks of
the cables to the Project and/or Vendor's drawings/documents.
5.1.4 All tests shall be performed in accordance with written test procedures
reviewed by the Engineer. Test procedures shall include provisions for
assuring that the pre-requisites for a given test have been met and that the
test is performed under suitable environmental conditions by
appropriately trained personnel using calibrated instrumentation with
current test certificates. Acceptance criteria for each test shall be defined
in the procedure.
5.1.5 The Engineer may witness all or some of the tests at his discretion. At
least ten working days (or as specified in the Requisition) notice shall be
given prior to the commencement of the tests.
5.1.6 Prior to commencement of the witness tests, the Vendor shall make
available the results of Vendor's own tests and existing certification.
5.1.7 The Vendor shall provide a written report, with a record of the readings
taken at the test, and appropriate test certificates and test logs included
for the Engineer's review.
5.1.8 Originals of all test certificates shall be submitted to the Engineer within
one week of the completion of the tests.
5.1.9 No material shall be shipped prior to the approval of the test report and
certification by the Engineer.
5.1.10 The acceptance of the test results by the Engineer shall not relieve the
Vendor from any guarantees, responsibilities or obligations to furnish
materials to this specification.
5.1.11 The Vendor shall be responsible for providing, at no extra cost, all test
equipment necessary to conduct the specified tests in a safe and
expedient manner.
5.1.12 The cost of rectification and repair to cables of any defects found during
inspection/testing shall be at the Vendor's expense.
5.2 Cable Tests
The manufacturer's standard tests shall be carried out (and witnessed as noted
above), these encompass the tests detailed in paragraphs 5.2.3, 5.2.6 (IEC 540) and
5.2.8. The remaining tests listed in this section are not required to be carried out
instead, type test certificates should be submitted in accordance with the VDR
requirements and the appropriate documentation, reports, procedures etc. shall be
made available for inspection by the client or his representatives.
5.2.1 Flame propagation test shall be carried out, on all cables, in accordance
with IEC-332.
5.2.2 The fire resistant cables shall be tested in respect of fire resistance in
accordance with IEC-331.
5.2.3 Electrical characteristic: The cable shall be tested in accordance with
applicable standard/codes listed in para 2.0.
The tests shall include, but not limited to
(a) Insulation resistance tests (of each conductor against remaining
conductors, screens, and armours).
(b) Resistance, inductance and capacitance tests.
(c) Voltage tests including spark test.
5.2.4 Oxygen index test: The outer sheath and the bedding shall be tested in
accordance with applicable standards and codes listed in para 2.0.
5.2.5 Tests shall be carried out to verify that the HCl release does not exceed

the limit specified in this specification.
5.2.6 The cable's physical characteristics shall be tested in accordance with
appropriate IEC documents.
5.2.7 Vendor shall demonstrate resistance to water by subjecting it to water
spray after fire resistance test.
5.2.8 Other tests shall include
(a) Measurement of insulation thickness and the thicknesses of inner
and outer sheaths.
(b) Measurement of diameter over inner and outer sheaths.
(c) Measurement of weight per yard.
5.2.9 If the selected cable sample should fail a test, then at the discretion of the
Engineer and at Vendor's expense, retests on further cable sample shall
be carried out. The inspectors shall reject the cable, if the cable fails to
meet the required acceptance criteria.

6.0 TECHNICAL INFORMATION REQUIRED WITH ORDER

6.2 Vendor shall supply proven test data as part of the order.
6.3 The cable data submitted and accepted prior to order may be used for design
purpose. Any deviations from the data, after the order, shall be subject to the
Engineer's approval.

7.0 CABLE GLANDS


7.1 Each cable gland shall conform in design with the requirements of the appropriate
and national standard(s) for the cable being offered.
7.2. The cable glands shall be manufactured from nickel plated brass.
7.3 Glands shall have the following features :
a) Mechanically activated weather-tight elastomer seal on the outer sheath of
the cable.
b) Mechanical clamping on the cable armour to provide strain relief.
c) Mechanically activated gas-tight seal on the inner cable sheath
(Vendor to state approval authority and certification details)
As part of the order Vendor shall provide a cross-sectional drawing of the gland
detailing materials used.
7.4 Glands for field end of cables shall be fitted to NPT entries.
7.5 Glands for the equipment room end of cables shall have threaded ends supplied with
back nuts suitable for drilled gland plates.
7.6 The threaded end of the cable glands shall have a minimum axial length of 0.6
inches.
7.7 The following accessories shall be supplied to complete each cable gland assembly:
a) Nickel Plated Ground Tag, of the type providing ready means of ground
connection to the gland at any position rotated about the axis of the gland.
(Ground continuity must be maintained between the ground tag and armour
clamping ring of gland)
b) Nylon66 or equal sealing washer to maintain the equipment weatherproof /
dustproof rating.
c) Nickel-plated brass locknut, hexagonal head heavy duty type and locking
washer.
d) Polychloroprene weatherproof shroud of the correct size.
7.8 For each cable offered by the Vendor in his bid he shall provide a cross referenced
list of suitable glands.

8.0 CABLE INSTALLATION MATERIALS


8.1 Cable Markers
Critchley type carrier strips for K type elliptical markers or equivalent, fixed to
cable with plastic coated aluminium strip (BETASTRIP), weather resistant.
8.2 Core Markers
Critchley expanding gusset type or equivalent.
8.3 Cable Straps
Plastic coated stainless steel all round band.
8.4 Cable Cleats
Cable cleats shall be plastic, Cablok type or equivalent.

General Notes

1 The coding of the cables on the attached tables follow the following system :
For each table (e.g. A), the numbers are allocated thus:

A01 - A20 : Flame retardant, Non I/S, armoured


A21 - A40 : Fire resistant, Non I/S, armoured
A41 - A60 : Flame retardant, I/S, armoured
A61 - A80 : Fire resistant, I/S, armoured

For un-armoured cable, code number is prefixed `U'

2 The types and the sizes of cables listed in the following tables are the current known and
estimated requirements. These may increase to include other combinations of
(a) intrinsically safe (I.S.) or non I.S
(b) fire resistant or flame retardant
