CUOMO, OBAMA IN NEW YORK STATE OF MIND, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL FINDS; BIG GENDER GAP ON CASINO CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and President Barack Obama are on top in New York with high approval and/or reelection numbers, while U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand falls below the 50 percent approval mark, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Gov. Cuomo gets a 69 19 percent job approval rating, including 64 21 percent among Republicans. This compares to Cuomos 68 17 percent approval in a December 20 survey and continues his trend as having the best job rating of any governor in the seven states surveyed by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. Approval is strong among every group, 68 20 percent among women, 72 17 percent among men, 75 16 percent among Democrats, 71 15 percent among independent voters, 69 18 percent upstate, 71 16 percent in New York City and 67 24 percent in the suburbs. With strong agreement among all groups, 64 percent of voters like Cuomo as a person. Sen. Gillibrand gets a 47 26 percent approval rating, falling below the 50-percent mark after a string of + 50 percent approval ratings late last year. Approval is 60 13 percent among Democrats and 48 26 percent among independent voters while Republicans disapprove 43 33 percent. When will the honeymoon end? Gov. Andrew Cuomos job approval numbers moved up last year and they stay up. New Yorkers like him as a person and, equally, they like his policies, said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. While there is no strong Republican challenger in the running so far, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has struggled for two years to stay above that 50 percent job approval mark. The rough and tumble of a reelection campaign could take its toll. -more-

Quinnipiac University Poll/February 15, 2012 page 2 New York State voters give President Obama a 50 46 percent job approval rating, unchanged from his 50 45 percent score December 21. Voters also say 50 45 percent that Obama deserves to be reelected. Obama leads head-to-head matchups over possible Republican challengers:

52 35 percent over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney; 57 31 percent over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; 53 35 percent over former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum. Romney leads the Republican presidential primary pack with 32 percent, followed by

Santorum with 20 percent, Paul with 14 percent and Gingrich with 10 percent. New York is blue. Voters give President Barack Obama only fair marks on doing his job and whether he deserves to keep it but he trounces the current Republican crop, Carroll said. New York Republicans dont seem to be joining the anyone-but-Romney dance. Voters approve 60 29 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is doing. Casino Gambling Voters support 54 38 percent the creation of Atlantic City-style casinos in New York. Support for the constitutional amendment needed to create casinos drops to 50 42 percent. Women are split on the constitutional amendment with 47 percent opposed and 44 percent in favor. Men support it 56 38 percent. Voters without a college degree support an amendment 52 41 percent while voters with a degree are mixed 46 44 percent. Voters support 49 39 percent a proposal for a conventions center and casino at Aqueduct Race Track in Queens. Women support this measure 45 41 percent while men support it 54 36 percent. Voters with college degrees back the plan 50 39 percent. Voters believe 50 37 percent that the proposal will cost the government a lot of money, but they feel 60 31 percent that it will be good for New Yorks economy. From February 8 13, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,233 New York State voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 399 registered Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
