Democracy in America:

1. How did American Democracy change in the 1820s?

In the 1820s, more men got to vote, but Black people lost voting rights.
People got more involved in politics thanks to Jacksonian Democracy.
Social tensions rose, leading to riots. Anti-Masonic and nativist
movements grew, showing people’s fears. More political involvement
came with more discrimination and unrest.

2. How did the rise and fall of the national bank influence American life?
The national bank helped the economy at first, but later caused
problems like the Panic of 1837. It changed politics by creating the
Democratic and Whig parties. Socially, it increased tension between
rich and poor and led to protests. These events shaped future banking
and politics in the U.S.

3. What role did tariffs play in American politics?

Tariffs played a role in American politics by causing fights between the
North and South. The Tariff of 1828 helped northern factories but hurt
the South. This led to big disagreements and tensions that eventually
led to the Civil War. Tariffs showed the struggle over state rights and
federal power.

4. What issues motivated new political parties?

New political parties formed because of money problems, voting rights
issues, and North-South fights. Jackson's fight with the national bank
and the Panic of 1837 also played big roles. These things led to new
parties like Democrats, Whigs, and Know-Nothings.

5. Is Andrew Jackson’s presidency best understood as tragedy, triumph,

or irony?
Andrew Jackson's presidency is a mix of good and bad. He helped more
people vote and fought against the national bank, but his policies hurt
Native Americans and caused economic problems. His actions showed
both his support for the common man and his use of strong power. His
legacy is debated.
