Introduction
An index is a representation of clinical observations of numbers. It is used usually to
describe the relative status of the individual or the population with respect to a
particular condition/disease being measured.
Indices using various criteria have been developed to compare the extent and severity
of the diseases. These measurements aid in the overall assessment of the oral health
status.
Definition
A numerical value describing the relative status of a population on a
graduated scale with definite upper and lower limits which is designed to
permit and facilitate comparison with other populations classified by the
same criteria and methods -Russell.A.L
Introduction
Caries indices for Primary Dentition
This is the caries index for deciduous teeth given by Gruebbel in 1944 for measuring
dental caries experience in primary dentition.
Caries indices used for primary dentition are deft index and defs equivalent to the
DMFTand DMFS indices used for permanent dentition.
Procedure
The deft Index is applied only to primary dentition.
-It is composed of three components,
d-decayed deciduous teeth
e-extracted deciduous teeth due to dental caries
f -filled deciduous teeth
Instruments used
- Mouth mirror
- Explorer
The criteria for identification of dental caries
Colour coding
Same as deft
Modifications of def Index
dmft index: This index is used in children before ahe of exfoliation.
df : Another method of choice adopted by WHO in their basic survey
techniques. This can be applied to the whole tooth as the decayed - filled -
tooth index or to the individual surfaces as the decayed - filled -surface
index.
Limitations
deft values are not related to the number of teeth at risk.
A defs examination takes longer .
defs is more likely to produce inconsistencies in diagnosis .
Advantages
The defs Index is more sensitive and is usually the index of choice in a
clinical trial of a caries - preventive agents.
Mixed Dentition
In a child with mixed dentition, both DMFT for permanent teeth and
deft for deciduous teeth have to be applied and should not be
added together.
