The Roomy Balaclava is a loose-fitting hood that is easy to combine with fashion. Knitted with two yarns of wool
and mohair, it protects the face and ears from the cold wind. It is worked from top-down. Knit the top square,
picking up stitches from each side to form the hood. The neck is formed with increases and decreases, then the
back and front are knitted separately before joining.

DIRECTION
TOP
CO 28 sts on 5.5 mm [US 9] a needle using the Longtail cast on method.
Work back and forth in stockinette stitch until back measures approx. 14 cm [5 ½”] from the cast on edge. Ending with
a WS row. Break yarn and place the stitches on a stitch holder or on scrap yarn.
HOOD
Pick up 24 sts on each side of top from RS side, then put all knit sts on needle. You have 76 sts on your needle. Next
row is a RS row.
Set-up rnd (RS): k23, k2tog tbl, PM, k26, PM, k2tog, k23 (2 sts decrease) 74 sts.
Continue working in stockinette stitch until the measures approx. 14cm [5 ½”] from the sts picked up on the side. Ending
with a WS row.
NECK
Shape the neck continue working in stockinette stitch while increasing and decreasing as follows:
Row 1 (RS): k3, M1L, k to until 2 sts before M, K2tog, SM, k to M, SM, SSK, k to last 3 sts of the round, M1R, k3 (=2 sts
increase and 2 sts decrease)
Row 2 (WS): p all sts.
Row 3 (RS): k all sts.
Row 4 (WS): p all sts.
Jaw section join to round (RS): k to end of row, CO 10 sts (using Backwards loop cast on method), PM (BOR), join to
round, k to M. 96 sts.
Continue working in stockinette stitch until the measures approx. 5 cm [2”] from the sts picked up on the jaw or your
desired length.
Switch to 4 mm [US 6] circular needle and work 4 rounds in rib (k1, p1).
