Tutorial Sheet_Module II_Interference_Part I (2)

The document is a tutorial assignment sheet for Module II: Interference, detailing various problems related to light interference, particularly focusing on Young's double slit experiment and Fresnel's biprism. It includes questions on calculating intensity ratios, fringe widths, wavelength determination, and comparisons between different experimental setups. The assignment aims to deepen understanding of interference patterns and the conditions required to observe them.

Tutorial/Assign ment Sheet

Module II: Interference

Par t I: Defin ition an d In ter feren ce by division of w avefron t

Date of Issue: Last date of submission :

1. W hat is in ter feren ce of light? W rite the impor tan t con dition s for gettin g a

sustain ed in ter feren ce pattern on the screen .

2. The ratio of in ten sities of tw o w aves that produce in ter feren ce pattern is 16:1.

Deduce the ratio of maximum to min imum in ten sities in the frin ge pattern .

Youn g’s double slit experimen t

3. Distan ce betw een tw o slits is 0.1 mm an d the w idth of the frin ges formed on the

screen is 5 mm. If the distan ce betw een the screen an d slits is on e meter, w hat

w ould be the w avelen gth of light?

4. In the Youn g’s double slit experimen t, light w aves comin g from both slits have

their phase shifted by half a w avelen gth. How w ould the frin ge pattern chan ge at

the screen ? How w ould the pattern chan ge if the light comin g from on ly on e of

the slits had its phase shifted by half a w avelen gth?

5. In the Youn g’s double slit experimen t, the an gle that locates the secon d dark

frin ge on either side of the cen tral bright frin ge is 5.4°. Fin d the ratio of the slit

separation d to the w avelen gth of light.

6. In the Youn g’s double slit experimen t, con sider tw o poin ts on the screen , on e

correspon din g to a path differen ce of 5000 Å an d the other correspon din g to a

path differen ce of 40000 Å. Fin d the w avelen gths (in the visible region ) w hich

correspon d to con structive an d destructive in ter feren ce.

7. A light source w hich emits light of tw o w avelen gths λ 1=4300 Å an d λ2=5100 Å, is

bein g used in a double slit in ter feren ce experimen t. If the distan ce betw een the
tw o slits is 0.025 mm an d screen is at a distan ce 1.5 m, calculate the separation

betw een the third order bright frin ges formed due to the tw o w avelen gths.
8.
Tw o w avelen gths λ1 an d λ2 are used in double slit experimen t. If λ1 = 430 n m,

w hat is the value of λ 2 so that the sixth order bright frin ge due to λ1 falls on the

four th order bright frin ge due to λ2.

9. Laser light of w avelen gth 630 n m in ciden t on a pair of slits produces an

in ter feren ce pattern in w hich the bright frin ges are separated by 8.1 mm. A

secon d light produces an in ter feren ce pattern in w hich the frin ges are separated

by 7.2 mm. Calculate the w avelen gth of the secon d light.

10. In an experimen t usin g sodium light of w avelen gth 5890 Å, an in ter feren ce

pattern w as obtain ed in w hich 20 equally spaced frin ges occupied 2.30 cm on the

screen . On replacin g sodium lamp w ith an other mon ochromatic source of a

differen t w avelen gth w ith n o other chan ges, 30 frin ges w ere foun d to occupy 2.80

cm on the screen . Calculate the w avelen gth of light from this source.

11. In youn g’s double slit experimen t, a source of light of w avelen gth 4200 Å is used
-2
to obtain in ter feren ce frin ges of w idth 0.64 × 10 m. W hat should be the
-2
w avelen gth of the light source to obtain frin ges 0.46 × 10 m w ide, if the distan ce

betw een screen an d slits is reduced to half the in itial value?

12. An eye piece placed at distan ce of 120 cm from the source an d on e has to move

the eye through a distan ce of 1.9 cm for obser vin g 20 frin ges. Calculate the

w avelen gth of light, if the distan ce betw een tw o slits is 0.06 cm.

Fresn el’s Biprism

13. W hich on e is better in terms of the in ter feren ce pattern obtain ed on the screen ,

Youn g’s double slit experimen t or Fresn el’s biprism. Explain the reason .

14. A biprism is placed at a distan ce of 10 cm from the slit. The frin ge w idth at 100

cm from the biprism for w avelen gth of 589.6 n m is 0.95 mm. Fin d out the distan ce
betw een tw o coheren t sources.

15. A Fresn el biprism arran gemen t is set w ith sodium light (λ=5893Å) an d in the

field of view of the eye-piece w e get 62 frin ges. How many frin ges shall w e get if

w e replace the source by mercur y lamp usin g (a) green filter (λ=5461Å) (b) violet

filter (λ=4358Å).
