LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Grade Level QUARTER 1 WEEK NO.4
6
Dara Mae D. De Leon

Topic : Mixtures and their Characteristics (Homogeneous and

Heterogeneous Mixtures)
Learning Competency/ies :
1. Prove that certain conditions affect how materials are mixed
1.1 Investigate on the effects of
certain factors to materials when mixed
● Stirring
● Temperature
● Particle Size
● Viscosity of liquid

I. Introduction (Big Ideas)

Solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in each amount
of solvent. Solutes can be classified according to their solubility.
Soluble substances are solutes that easily dissolve in a given
solvent. Semi soluble substances are those that dissolve a little.
Flour and soil are semi soluble substances. Substances that do not
dissolve at all are insoluble. Examples are pepper, rice, and pebbles.
When semi soluble and insoluble substances are mixed with a
solvent, they from a suspension. The undissolved particles
eventually settle at the bottom of the container. These particles can
easily be seen.
When you put sugar into a glass of cold water, some particles do
not dissolve immediately, but when you stir the solution, the sugar
particles will disappear and spread evenly in the water. Stirring is a
method of dissolving substances by using mechanical force. Shaking
is similar to stirring but in this method, the container is closed, and
it is moved rapidly using the hand or using a machine such as a
blender to mix and spread the solutes until these are dissolved.
Heating is another method of dissolving substances faster. Sugar
dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water. Powdering or
pulverizing is done by making the particles of solid substances
smaller to make them dissolve faster when mixed with the solvent.
Refined sugar

II. Development
LEARNING TASK #1
What am I?
Identify if the mixture below is a solution or a suspension.
Write the answer in the second column of the table. Then,
describe the appearance of the mixture (completely dissolved or
with undissolved particles). Write the description in the third
column.
Mixture Type of Mixture Appearance of the
Mixture
1. Seawater Solution completely
dissolved
2. Liquid antibiotic Suspension with undissolved
particles
3. Buko juice Suspension with undissolved
particles
4. Rubbing alcohol Solution completely
dissolved
5. Juice with fruit Suspension with undissolved
pulp particles

III. Engagement ( Activity/ies )

LEARNING TASK #2
Let’s find out!
Let’s find out: What mixture is formed when the substance
does not dissolve?
Let’s use these materials: two empty glasses labeled A and B, 1
teaspoon sugar, 40mL tap water, 1 teaspoon chocolate powder

Let’s do it this way:

1. Fill glass A and B with 40ml water.
2. Drop 1 teaspoon of sugar into glass and 1 teaspoon of
chocolate powder I to glass B.
3. Stir the mixtures. Observe what happens.
4. Let the mixtures stand for a while. Observe the mixtures
after 3 to 5 minutes.

Let’s state our observations:

1. Describe the appearance of the mixture in glass A.
__________________________________________________
2. Describe the appearance of the mixture in glass B.
__________________________________________________
3. Explain what happened to the two mixtures after they were
left untouched for a while.
__________________________________________________
4. Compare the two mixtures you prepared.
__________________________________________________
5. What mixture is formed when substances do not dissolve?
______________________________________________________________

IV. A. Assimilation (Reinforcement activity)

Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Why is spaghetti a heterogeneous mixture?
a. Its ingredients cannot be distinguished easily.
b. It has a main component or base ingredient.
c. Its ingredients can be distinguished easily.
d. It is delicious and mixed well.
2. You are asked to prepare a drink that is heterogeneous mixture.
What would you prepare?
a. instant coffee and hot water c. soft drinks
b. warm milk d. orange juice with pulp
3. What do you call a soft, heated mass of crushed leaves and other
substances that is spread over the skin to treat swelling the pain?
a. bandage c. poultice
b. ointment d. solution
4. Which of the following ingredients produce a heterogeneous mixture
when mixed?
a. oil and water c. salt and vinegar
b. sugar and water d. molten copper and zinc
5. What is the best description of a heterogeneous mixture?
a. It could break down easily. c. We could not easily see the
particles.
b. We could easily see the particles. d. It could transfer the
particles to another place
B. Real Life Application
Have you experienced preparing Milo and hot water? What
happened to the two mixtures after they were left untouched for a while?
_____________________________________________________________________________
C. Assessment
Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which best describes a suspension?
a. It has microscopic particles.
b. It has particles that settle at the bottom.
c. It has particles that are uniformly distributed.
d. It has particles that are completely dissolved throughout.2
2. Which is an example of a suspension?
a. hot coffee c. buko-pandan drink
b. milk d. lemonade
3. How can you dissolve powdered coffee, creamer, and sugar in water?
a. by stirring c. by pulverizing
b. by shaking d. by stirring and using hot water
4. Which of the following is true?
a. A suspension is homogeneous.
b. A suspension has particles that cannot be seen.
c. A suspension has particles that are easily identified.
