1.1.0 Auxiliary steam system is designed to provide steam for the turbine auxiliaries, boiler auxiliaries
and fuel oil heating system during start-up, low loads and normal running of unit.
1.2.0 The system comprises of high capacity auxiliary steam conditioning valve, with tapping off
steam from main steam line to meet auxiliary steam requirements during unit start-up, low loads
& for fuel oil system. Low capacity pressure reducing valve with tapping off steam from CRH
line to meet auxiliary steam requirements during normal running is also envisaged. Spray water
required for desuperheating will be tapped off from power cycle pump discharge.
1.3.0 These two stations will reduce the pressure and temperature of the steam tapped off from main
steam line and CRH line to 16 kg/cm2 (abs) & 320oC at the high temperature auxiliary steam header
and subsequently to 16 kg/cm2 (abs) & 210oC at the low temperature auxiliary steam header through
a suitable desuperheater between the high temperature and low temperature auxiliary steam headers.
1.4.0 The change-over from low capacity PRV to high capacity steam conditioning valve & vice-versa is
automatic with manual override facility. However, manual operation overrides the auto operation.
During high capacity steam conditioning valve operation, low capacity PRV remains in operation.
1.5.0 Auxiliary steam system is normally operating on unit basis, however auxiliary steam system of both
the units are interconnected through HT and LT auxiliary steam headers, so that unit start-up
requirement of one unit can be met from other unit or vice-versa.
1.6.0 Motor operated bypass valves of inching type are provided across low capacity PRV (ASV-65) and
spray control valves (FDV-28 & CDV 70) as shown in PID auxiliary steam, which can be operated
remote manually in case of mal-operation of respective main control valve.
The controls and interlocks of Aux. PRDS shall be realised in DDCMIS. The operation of APRDS
shall be from OWS (Operator Work Station) and essential indications & operations shall also be
provided from Unit control Desk.
2.1.0 Auxiliary steam header pressure is sensed by pressure transmitters LBG30 CP011 & CP012 in MVN
mode and ASV-22 or LC-PRV (ASV-65) (depending upon the valve selected for operation) is
modulated to maintain constant pressure of 16 kg/sq.cm (a) in the auxiliary steam header. If both
high capacity steam conditioning valve & LC-PRV are in operation, high capacity steam
conditioning valve is modulated to maintain constant header pressure.
2.2.0 High temperature auxiliary steam header temperature will be sensed by temperature elements
LBG30 CT011 & CT012 in MVN mode and spray water temperature control valve FDV-28 is
modulated to maintain HT header temperature.
2.3.0 Low temperature auxiliary steam header temperature will be sensed by temperature elements
LBG40 CT011 and CT012 in MVN mode & spray water temperature control valve CDV-70 is
modulated.
2.4.0 When ASV-22 opens greater than 2 %, the following actions will be initiated -

(i) The HT header and LT header spray water control system shall be 'on auto mode' i.e. HT spray
water control valves FDV-28 and LT spray control valves CDV-70 are to be in operation
automatically.
(ii) The motor operated isolating valves FDV-27 & CDV-89 in spray water lines will open
automatically.
2.5.0 When ASV-22 is fully closed (valve opening less than 2%), after a time delay of 0-300 secs.
(adjustable), the following interlock actions will be initiated:
(i) The control valves FDV-28 in HT header spray water line will close.
(ii) The motor operated isolating valve FDV-27 in HT header spray water line will also close.
2.6.0 When LC-PRV (ASV-65) opens greater than 2 %, the following actions will be initiated:-
(i) The upstream motor operated isolating valve ASV-25 will open automatically.
(ii) The LT header spray water control system shall be 'on auto mode' i.e spray water control valve
CDV-70 is to be in operation automatically.
(iii) The motor operated isolating valve CDV-89 in LT header spray water line will open automatically.
2.7.0 When LC-PRV (ASV-65) valve opening less than 2%, the following interlock actions will be
initiated after a time delay of 0-300 secs (adjustable):
(i) The motor operated isolating valve ASV-25 on the upstream side will close.
2.8.0 When both the ASV-22 and ASV-65 are fully closed (valve opening less than 2%), after a time
delay of 0-300 secs (adjustable), the following interlock actions will be initiated simultaneously: -
(i) The control valve CDV-70 in LT header spray water line will close.
(ii) The motor operated isolating valve CDV-89 in LT header spray water line will also close.
2.9.0 LC-PRV (ASV-65) will operate only when CRH line steam pressure is greater than 18 kg/cm2(a)
(adjustable) and the impulse for the same shall be given from the pressure transmitter LBG20
CP011.
2.10.0 Auto change-over from LC-PRV to high capacity steam conditioning valve & vice versa
2.10.1 Auto change-over from LC-PRV to high capacity steam conditioning valve
2.10.1.1 During normal running LC PRV is in operation. Fall in auxiliary steam header pressure due to
increased auxiliary steam requirement, automatically cuts in high capacity steam conditioning valve
into operation.
High capacity steam conditioning valve also comes into operation automatically when LC-PRV
(ASV-65) lift goes above 90%, while LC PRV remains in operation.
2.10.1.3 When ASV-22 opens automatically, controls will be transferred to high capacity steam conditioning
valve, i.e. when both HC & LC valves are in operation, controls are transferred to HC steam
conditioning valve.
2.10.1.4 However, once high capacity steam conditioning valve (ASV-22) opens on force auto, immediately
reason for increased auxiliary steam consumption should be investigated and fault, if any, should be
immediately rectified.
2.10.1.5 Facility shall be provided to close LC-PRV manually in case high capacity steam conditioning valve
(ASV-22) is operating at low lift condition. However, operation/closure of LC-PRV is left on the
judgement of operator. Nevertheless, prolonged & repeated operation of control valves at very low
opening is undesirable.
2.10.2.1 Auto change-over from high capacity steam conditioning valve to LC-PRV
When high capacity steam conditioning valve (ASV-22) lift goes below 10% due to decrease in
auxiliary steam requirement and CRH line pressure is greater than 18 kg/cm2(a), the LC-PRV cuts in
automatically and controls are transferred to LC-PRV. High capacity steam conditioning valve will
be given a force close command with a time delay of 0-100 secs. (adjustable).
3.1.0 When the downstream temperature i.e. HT & LT auxiliary steam headers temperature are 340 deg C
& 230 deg C respectively, high temperature alarm is annunciated in the control room. In case either
HT header temperature reaches 350 deg C (adjustable) or LT header temperature reaches 250 deg C
(adjustable), very high temperature alarm is annunciated in the control room & pressure reducing
valve in operation (i.e high capacity steam conditioning valve /LC-PRV) will close automatically,
on priority after a time delay of 0-120 secs (adjustable). This overrides auto & remote manual
operation.
3.2.0 Under power supply failure or power air failure, the control valves will remain in stay-put condition.
3.3.0 When the system is in “Auto” mode and if the regulation transmitter fails, the system will give an
alarm and simultaneously the control loop will change-over to manual mode.
3.4.0 Whenever HT/LT header pressure reaches 15 kg/sq.cm(a) and HT header temp. reaches 290 deg C
& LT header temp. reaches 200 deg C, “Low” header pressure / Temp., as applicable, shall be
annunciated in UCB.
3.5.0 High capacity steam conditioning valve (ASV-22) shall be brought into service during start up of the
unit. The initial conditions for cutting in of ASV-22 shall be :
(i) When Main Steam line is charged and SH outlet valves MSV-1 (LBA01 AA001) / MSV-2 (LBA02
AA001) are open.
