SECTION-B
This section contains 5 questions with internal choice in one question. The following questions are very
short answer type and carry 2 marks each.
17. Determine the empirical formula of an oxide of iron which has 69.9 % iron and 30.1 % dioxygen by
mass. ( Given molecular mass of Fe = 56 g/mol, molecular mass of O = 16 g/mol )
18. Answer the following questions:
(i) Which among the following are isoelectronic species Ca2+ , S2 , Mg2+
(ii) From the given configuration identify the element [Ne] 3s2 3p5
(iii) Identify the orbital from given set of quantum number n = 4 , ℓ = 2
(iv) What is the atomic number of element whose outermost shell is represented as 3s 1
19. Write electronic configuration of N2 molecule according to MOT.
(i) Calculate its bond order (ii) predict its magnetic property
OR
Boiling point of water is more than boiling point of H2S, suggest reason.
20. Calculate the work done during expansion of a gas against constant external pressure of 2 atm from
initial volume of 3 L to final volume of 6 L.
SECTION-D
The following questions are case-based questions. Each question has an internal choice and carries 4 (1 +
1 + 2) marks each.
29. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that following question:
When an electron is added to a gaseous atom in its ground state to convert it into a negative ion, the
enthalpy change accompanying the process is called the electron gain enthalpy (egH). It is direct
measure of the ease with which an atom attracts an electron to form anion.
X(g) + e → X(g) ; H = egH
Depending on Zeff and atomic radius, electron enthalpy shows regular trend on moving across in a
period and on moving down in a group. Sometimes due to valence shell configuration, some exceptions
are observed in the regular trend. Like ionization enthalpy, unit of egH is also eV/atom or kJ/mole.
Unlike electron gain enthalpy & Ionisation energy, electronegativity is not an energy term, preferably it
is measure of tendency to attract shared pair of electron.
(i) Noble gases have zero electron gain enthalpy, why?
(ii) The electron gain enthalpy of ‘O’ or ‘F’ is less than that of ‘s’ or ‘Cl’, give reason.
(iii) Write difference between electron gain enthalpy & electronegativity.
OR
Give reason:
(a) Alkali metals, act as strong reducing agent.
(b) Halogen act as strong oxidizing agent.
30. Read the passage and answer the following questions.
Measurement of pH of a solution is very essential as its value should be known when dealing with
biological applications. pH of a solution can be measured by using pH paper and more accurately it can
be measured using pH-meter.
pH of a solution can be calculated by knowing H+ ion concentration in the solution.
(i) Assuming complete dissociation calculate pH of 0.003 M HCl. (log3 = 0.47)
(ii) Calculate hydrogen ion concentration of lemon juice if its pH is 2.2. (Antilog -2.2 = 6.3 10-
3
)
(iii) The ionization constant of propanoic acid is 1.32 105. Calculate degree of ionization and pH of
acid, if its concentration is 0.05 M. (log8 = 0.9030)
OR
Calculate pH of the mixture of 10 mL of 0.2 M Ca(OH)2 & 25 mL of 0.1 M HCl.
(log4.2 = 0.62, log 1.42 = 0.15)
SECTION-E
