A note from Ms. Hofer...

Our health and wellness theme last month turned out great! The Pre-Ks stayed engaged with the new centers. They used their problem solving skills and practiced their creativity in the hair salon, and took part in creative role play while in the doctors office. Our Germ awareness day was enlightening for a lot of us, as we discovered, through a black light, how many germs really stay on our hands! As Kindergarten approaches for some of the pre-ks, you may have noticed your child starting to show an interest in numeracy and pre-literature. Although our main focus in Pre-K is not heavily based on these skills, they are still being encouraged. In Pre-Kindergarten our mission and focus is to create a stimulating play-based environment, where curiosity and exploring is encouraged. Through block building, role play, and centers, your child is in fact working on their numeracy and pre-literature skills, as they are continually problem solving, counting, and expanding their vocabulary. An exciting event that we have planned this month is our Math Literacy day on the 29th. The Phys Ed, Math, Early Childhood, Religion, and First Nations consultants will be coming out to do various math integrated stations with the Pre-ks and Kindergartens. Again, if you have any questions about anything feel free to pop in the class, or send me an email. Ms. Hofer

The Theme of the month: Nursery Rhymes

This month we will be actively using our imaginations through nursery rhymes and fairy tales! Puppet shows, characterization, and role-playing, are a few techniques we will be exploring. Through these skills your child will be building confidence and working on their vocabulary. On the Pre-K calendar I have listed what Fairy Tale we will be focusing on for the week. A good way to reinforce these stories is to see if your child can re-tell the fairy tale to you before going to bed, or during your story time. We will also be focusing on biblical stories throughout the month of Lent to teach the children more about who Jesus is, and some of the incredible things He has done!

Group Show & Tell

Starting this month we will be having a Group Show and Share day, where each child will bring something from home. The theme of this Group Show and Share will be something green around their home. The object they bring can be anything from a toy, to something found in the yard or garage. The more unique the object is, the more interesting it becomes. A student once brought a motherboard from an old laptop. Before they come to school with their object, I ask that you discuss it with your child. Their job on this day will be to tell the following three things about it: 1. What is it used for/ what does it do? 2. Where did you find it? 3. How does it feel, smell, taste, or does it make any sounds? Another interesting part of this Show and Share will include the option to use a microphone. Because we are practicing on projecting our voices and being audible, the pre-ks will have the option to speak into the microphone during their sharing time. If they are not ready for that, and choose not tothat is fine as well. Through this project your child will be building confidence and working on their language skills.

What are the Pre-ks doing for Lent

Because Lent is a time to give of ourselves there are several actions we will be doing throughout the Lenten season. As a whole, our school is participating in a fundraising project for Lent, which goes towards the Holy Childhood Association. Each classroom was given a country to raise money for; the pre-ks and their big buddies are contributing their donations to India and Papua New Guinea. Some of the upcoming school wide fundraising events so far include: hot dog day, a bottle drive, and teacher makeovers. If your child would like to bring a donation to put towards A teacher makeover they are welcome to. The male and female with the most votes in the end will be the one who takes on the student led transformation. If you would like to contribute to our bottle drive, we ask that you start collecting your empties which will be brought to the school on a later date. If you have a truck, and are interested in helping out with the bottle drive please come talk to me for details. As a class, we will be doing our own fundraising events, as we need to raise 250 dollars per classroom to reach our school goal of $4,000 . Stay posted for more details in the near future!
